10 reasons panthers should draft Newton...

I'm by no means certain that we can't win a Super Bowl with Cam Newton. I just think a title is what it will take to get the kind of sea change in the Carolinas that we all want. It has less to do with Cam Newton and more to do with the fact that winning a Super Bowl is freaking hard.

By the way I'm not an advocate for passing on Newton.

We will just have to disagree then, because I believe Cam would infuse a ton of excitement in to this franchise and that it could be sustained even without a Super Bowl victory. I believe most fans just want to see an exciting brand of football that is consistently competitve, and if we can win a Super Bowl within the next 5 years, that's just icing on the cake.

i'm not opposed to the idea of newton but will everyone feel so gung-ho about him if he doesn't throw at the combine?

The only reason I want him to throw at the combine, is so I can watch it. It makes no difference to the Panthers though, because they can see him throw at his pro day or get a private workout if they so choose. He's not going to turn down the team with the #1 pick.

Here is the ultimate question:

1) If Newton works out we have a franchise QB for the next 10 years if it doesn't then we will be set back wt least 2-3 more years...so is this worth the risk?

If by setback you mean we tank the season again and are forced to have the number 1 pick in 2013. I mean, even though it sounds miserable for a year, I think we get our franchise QB in that situation either way.

Would Luck have been worth the risk? Would Barkley be worth the risk? Would Flacco or Aaron Rodgers have been worth the risk? At some point, you just have to stop being scared and go for it.

Personally, I think Newton is actually less of a risk than a prototypical pocket passer, because we already know for a fact that he will be one of the best, if not the best athlete on the field, and he will touch the ball on every single play. The last time I checked, a 20yd TD run counts exactly the same as a 20yd TD pass, and a 1st down is still a 1st down, regardless of how you accomplish it.

Yes, but i think it would only set us back one year, being we would just be out one possible impact DT. And still be marching the same mediocre qbs out on the field year after year. At some point you have to take a chance on a qb unless you want our franchise to keep playing road-grade qbs for the next 20 years.

Newton would have to be developed into an NFL QB. So we would have 3 projects (Newton, Clausen, Edwards) and one below average veteran (Moore)

No thanks

Well Clausen was already supposed to be NFL ready, so that doesn't seem to make as much difference as people want to believe...and Edwards is not a QB, he's a WR. Every other QB on the roster is 100% expendable.

Personally I'm reserved spending our #1 on him until he does go to the combine. It's not just the throwing for me, but I'm eager to see how the interview process & evaluations go. From how he's carried himself so far, I expect good things but we'll see.

    • Oh he would absolutely flourish. It’s the panthers way. It’s no different with coaches. Sometimes they reach their expiration date, go somewhere else, and find new success.  Similarly to Burns, how long to wait for the light to finally turn on?  Market forces will demand a salary that the panthers can not responsibly match. Sliding him to guard will fit his skill set better, but he has played LT for 3 years. He will receive offers from other teams wanting to pay him LT money.  At guard, he won’t start with what they have paid Hunt and Lewis. Center then?? Dunno. Maybe? He will become a backup by default once they draft their stud LT. I doubt Dan just stands pat. That’s not his MO.  So where does this put him? Can you match what other teams will offer for a backup LT/guard? Do you dish out franchise LT $ on a guy who still needs significant improvement in pass protection. This team will be DOA in the playoffs with the very first team who has a formidable speed rusher. What if he has hit his ceiling in pass protection already and they sign him long term? It’s a big gamble either way.
    • We're in a great position to see just how big of a misstep it would be, having made so many ourselves
    • I didn't say I would have done it. I was just saying that I can see why some in the FO considered it. Everything was done to give Bryce weapons. Solidify the interior line thru FA. Get XL at WR in round 1 and then get the most talented RB in round 2. Take a TE in round 4, etc They were probably "assuming" he'd make a complete recovery during the 2024 season. I'm a skeptical person. I wouldn't have assumed he'd be ok in 2024. I personally would have taken another position in the 2nd for that very reason. But, if I were "influenced" to take him I would've argued to keep him off the field, especially seeing how things were going for us record wise. Conventional Wisdom says most backs don't get back to normal until two years after the ACL surgery. He was injured in Fall 2023. Having him suit up in 2025 would have been almost 2 years since the original injury. You have him for 3 year on low contract. If he balls out, you resign him for a couple of more years b/c he'd only have 3 years of tread on the tires. If he's ok but not great you let him walk.
