10 reasons panthers should draft Newton...

millions of Newton threads on the huddle ect...but here goes anyways

1. Need-The worst offense in the nfl last season who needs a QB more than us?

2.Potential-Yes there may be better players in this draft better than Cam but, none i repeat none have more upside than Newton.

3.Rare talent-If you can name another 6'6 250 Quarterback in the NFL that has the arm speed and talent of newton...well i guess he wouldn't be that rare lol..

4.Sales-If cam does tap into his potential he is a big name,he would sale ton of jerseys and put butts in seats.

5.Leadership-Not to say none of the other quarterbacks have this ablity but, for a unnamed nobody at the start of the season to lead a team to the championship is unheard of.

6 winning mentality-He's a winner he's won on every team he's been a part of. after drafting a play who was suppose to have all the tools last year besides being a winner,i think we'd all agree this is important.

7. impact-No other position affects the team more than quarterback. even if green, fairly and bowers are studs.

8.Outside the box-Okay, seriously aren't we tired of drafting safe to decent players??? I come from the school you have to be in it to win it.Drafting "image" starters doesn't push you into the Elite.

9.Face of the Franchise-When the rest of the world thinks panthers, who's the first person they think of? Cam hate him or love him has a smile that could be on ads more than any player on the roster.

10.Were drafting first-How often do we get to select the best quarterback in the draft? Aren't we tired of marveling at other teams elite quarterbacks wishing we had one? Going in to each draft wishing we could select bradford, ryan, freeman, manning. Top flight quarterbacks often come early in the draft.

fug it, we suck bad enough it couldn't hurt. Missed our chance to get vick. i commented earlier that the difference between clausen, mccoy and The Golden Calf of Bristol was that mccoy and The Golden Calf of Bristol were winner in college. but then again, vy was a winner too. in the end we shouldnt jump too soon. gotta see what he can do at the combine for what its worth as well as interviews. but i think he has more possitive than negative potential. and we can get other positions of need later in the draft and fa. it would just suck really really bad if bowers ended up being another peppers with a better motor.

Cam's stock is going to shoot through the roof by the time the draft gets here. No way he makes it past Arizona at #4 and there's a good chance the Bills take him 3rd. I think he will be rightfully considered among the BPA's by April and given that we need a QB badly and Hurney has constantly said this even though we already have Clausen, I think if they have Cam, Bowers, Green, Peterson, & Fairley all rated equally QB would win out.

Recent comments by Hurney have me believing that we are seriously considering Newton. He recently said something to the effect of "it's not just impact players, but impact positions" and re-emphasized that we HAVE to address the QB situation.

That tells me that they're looking HARD at QB's and I have to believe they're going to be mighty attracted to Cam Newton's overall potential. Sign a veteran stop-gap to backup Clausen and if Jimmy struggles put him in.

Let Cam sit and learn without the pressure of being a rookie starter on a bad team like Clausen. Shula worked with a similar style QB in Garrard; a guy who was more of an athlete than a QB and Shula got some good results. Newton is 10x the athlete that Garrard is and MUCH more naturally gifted as both a passer and runner.

People listing one of Newton's advantages as an assload of ticket and jersey sales is something that almost always comes up in these threads. Why does anyone think that's important? Did you look at the legion of bandwagon player fans that guys like Vick drew to the Falcons and get jealous or something?

Because there are way too many Dallas, Redskins and Steelers fans (among others) within a 100 mile radius of BOA. We have practically no homefield advantage unless or until the team has a good enough season to get in the play offs, otherwise a lot of people either stay home or sell their tickets to the visiting teams fans, even before the Panthers are eliminated from the play offs.

If you don't think that matters, you might want to take in to account how hard it is for teams to beat the Steelers in their house, or how their fans travel no matter where they play. I would say they probably win at least 1-2 close games a year, if not more, just because of their home field advantage.

Nobody likes boring football, and that's what we have right now.

There are very few guarantees when it comes to the draft, but it's pretty much a sure thing that Cam Newton will make a lot of big plays with his feet and his arm, regardless of where he goes, and that's what people want to see.

Those fanbases are exactly what I had in mind, just pretty much the opposite of what you're saying here. Yes, Cam Newton would excite the fanbase and put asses in seats. Hell, maybe even a few Redskins, Cowboys, and Steelers fans would buy jerseys and turn up. But unless we win a Super Bowl or just wreck poo in our division year after year like the Colts, the minute things go south (a bad season or two is unavoidable in this parity-heavy era of the NFL), they'll be back on the bandwagon with their other teams. I've seen people run back to their "real teams" too many times to think that one player is going to change things permanently. Put yourself in their shoes:

Redskins fan: Organization blows and the team hasn't done much in ages, but there is a dedicated fanbase spread throughout the Carolinas and the team has a long legacy.

Steelers fan: Above x2 and they're contenders year in and year out

Cowboys fan: Similar to the Skins

Panthers: They've got Cam Newton!

I mean if I'm a pole smoking bandwagon asshat, the choice is easy. There are better reasons to draft Newton than jersey sales.

I think he's well worth the risk. Next year we're going to be a ton better anyway, simply by virtue of experience and a new coaching staff. And I don't think anyone seriously expects a playoff run, much less contending for the championship. So it's a great time to take a chance.

If we could get him at the top spot, and play Clausen for another year, then that does a few nice things. First, it shows the league that Clausen can, in fact play, and hopefully well enough to be nice trade bait once Cam is ready. Second, if Clausen does suck then it gives Management a way to assure fans that they've addressed the position, and that they're trying to do it the smart way. Third, it doesn't put Newton in a position to develop bad habits right away. And fourth, if it backfires and we totally suck again then we get Andrew Luck.

Fairley would be nice, but DTs rarely make an impact as rookies and there are good ones to be had later. Green would be a great pick, but at number one? Bowers will follow the great tradition of Clemson DEs in the NFL. Peterson is great, but again, at number one? This is a high risk pick, but an incredible reward if it pans out. And there isn't a better time to take it.

So what makes you so sure we can't win a Super Bowl with Cam Newton, and who do you think would be better? It's not like we can count on Luck or Barkley to be there when we pick next year. Hell, there is no guarantee that those guys will even be in the draft since they both will have a year of eligibility left.

One thing is for sure, this fan base is never going to get excited over Jimmy Clausen, Tony Pike, or Billy freakin Volek, and Nick Fairley is sure as hell not going to guarantee us a Super Bowl victory anytime soon either, especially if the defense is on the field for 2/3rds of the game.

forget bandwagons, forget hype, forget starpower. you know what sells tickets and puts ass in seats? winning. you put the guys on the field who give you the best chance of winning. if clausen can win ten games, i bet you'll see his jersey on the streets. and what builds a fanbase? consistent winning. after all is said and done, after the long jump, sprints, passes and interviews, if its believed that newton can win us more games than pickles, then hes our man. as yas said, if someone's in the top five, you might as well pick him with the #1. DT's, DE's, DB's can be found. Star QBs are a gem. You take 'em when you can get 'em. Hurney thought he had a gem with jimmy. didnt pan out. try again.

I'm by no means certain that we can't win a Super Bowl with Cam Newton. I just think a title is what it will take to get the kind of sea change in the Carolinas that we all want. It has less to do with Cam Newton and more to do with the fact that winning a Super Bowl is freaking hard.

By the way I'm not an advocate for passing on Newton.

    • You and I both know there isn't a coach we could or can still hire that can "fix" Bryce Young. Even at mighty Alabama with one of the best modern coaches in college football history Mac Jones was still a better QB than Bryce Young. Mac Jones.... We already know how you feel about Canales on a personal level so in that regard you wanting him fired is not news. You don't have to disguise it behind this shroud of rabble about not fixing Bryce Young. To his credit he somehow had us competive against the Chiefs and the Eagles on the road with #9. But no coaching staff can overcome their starting QB turning the ball over 4 times. We definitely have developed some of our younger offensive pieces. And as far as Evero goes he has earned criticism and if he's fired so be it but in his defense many of us said in the offseason this defensive roster was a disaster waiting to happen given the resources we spent on the offense while neglecting the defense. That was Dan Morgan's plan. He swung too hard toward offense to salvage the Bryce Young trade. That's on him. We can scream about XL all we want but at least he's actually been on the field for the most part. The Brooks pick was a luxury pick at the time and now it is a Hurney level blunder. Dan Morgan has gotten a lot of early praise here when in reality he's unequivocally deserving of significant criticism. But if you say that some people get up in arms because he's a former Panther. Big whoop. He has just as much to prove this upcoming season as Canales. That's why to me in my own personal opinion I say one more season and then if it's more of the same say goodbye to both.
    • It's a decent vid with compelling reasons for his opinion. But, my thing is is that you simply can't draft McMillan thinking he is a surefire WR1. There are questions. His 40---rightly or wrongly---will play a part. I'd think that his splits (which will speak more to his game translating to the pros in my mind) are more important.  As much as you're trying to sell us that McMillan is a don't-overthink-it-type-of-player, I wouldn't say that's the case. Workouts will play a part in all of this.  At this point, I like the thought of Tetairoa. That's as much as I can give you right now.
