So hypothetically speaking

In no way am I on the Newton badnwagon. Just something to take into consideration.

Say we do go ahead and get a stop-gap QB for a year or two. Wouldn't it be logical to draft Newton considering he already has the elite physical tools to work with? Now obviously the FO must think they can develop the mental part of his game like going through every progression, reading defenses, etc. From what I've read it's not that he's not smart enough to learn but more that he is a blank canvas since he has never had to do it.

On the other hand we draft Green, Peterson or Fairley. We have another lousy year and are in a position to draft Luck, Barkley or Jones. But what would happen if they don't make the immediate leap to the NFL or end up not living up to the potential and expectations as many QBs do? (i.e. Clausen "the most pro ready QB") Thus losing another year developing what would be our franchise QB Newton.

Another problem would be our stop-gap QB leading us to a 6-10 or better record and eliminating us from any position to draft our so called franchise QB. Do you mortgage the future to trade up and snag him, pray from someone to fall, turn to Clausen, or stay mediocore?

Again not on the Newton bandwagon. Just want to know everyones thoughts. Ofcourse, stiring up the pot too :D

This year, 6-10 landed anywhere from 7th to 13th. Plenty of franchise QBs have been taken in that period I think, but I could be wrong. :)

The thing is, no matter who we take, it'll be a risk. They could bust. Newton could bust this year. Luck could bust next year. Whoever we take wherever they are could bust.

The question is if they would rather work on developing the QBs they have now and then, if that doesn't turn out well, try again, or if they should take this opportunity to grab what they can and hope for the best.

I am not sure what to do myself.

Actually, no. It isn't logical.

If they sign a stopgap, then essentially this will be Clausen's "make or break" year. The veteran signee will be a failsafe in case Clausen doesn't prove himself worthy.

Let's suppose for a moment that Clausen actually does prove to be worth something though. If you drafted a QB at number one, then you've used a pick on a guy you don't need when it could have gone to upgrade another spot like DT or CB.

Like it or not folks, Clausen will get his shot with the current staff.

Ofcourse Clausen will get another shot deservingly so. But Hurney saying QB is our no.1 need isn't exactly a vote of confidence.

Having Clausen workout with Newton waiting in the wings is not a bad problem to have. We would be in a situation like Philly where teams are constantly inquiring about their QBs. Although that is a huge risk to take with the #1 pick in the draft. Especially with elite athletes sitting there at positions of need.

It is my personal quest in life to get you on the Cam bandwagon. Come join us. It is nice.

For the record i have never gone to bat this much for a QB in my life.

If Clausen proves he is worth something you have a lot of value in either Clausen or Cam down the road. if you don't screw it up like San Diego did with Brees and Rivers you can pick up players/picks with this asset. Not the worst position to be in.

anti-newtons i see... we get to pick anyone.... so we pick the best player at the worst position(happens to be the most important), period. God only knows whats ahead in next years draft to many variables the world may end by then. The fact that they were going to draft luck puts to rest the "give clausen another year" talk.

This is the best offseason in Panther history. I love the exposure our franchise and fanbase is getting. I love people are getting to see how we really feel and what really scares us.

I'm gonna respectfully disagree with you on that. If we have two great QB's on our roster then we can choose which we want, and trade a proven young QB stud for a ridiculous price!!!

Extra young QB with high upside, showed they can be a franchise QB... Were getting more than a first and a third!!! Meaning not a wasted pick.
