No, the OP is correct.

Arizona at 5, or Cincy at 4, has to consider him.

Locker has fallen out of the top ten.

Thank you...i couldn't find it...

Sorry, wrong.

He said he could see him rising and that the Cardinals or Bills might consider him at #4 or #5, but he did not say he was the top QB right now. Neither does the video, nor the story linked.

I've looked at his Big Board, Mock Draft and Top Five by position. Kiper still has Gabbert ahead of Newton on all three. McShay still has Gabbert ahead too.

The OP is wrong.

as of Jan 22...

http://www.nfl.com/news/story/09000d5d81dd8ff0/article/underclassmen-prevalent-among-top-five-per-position

With the draft process just getting under way, here is a look at the top five prospects by position (underclassmen are indicated by a *). It is too soon to evaluate the quarterback position based on rankings, so they are separated into groups of four.

I'm sure it may change but I thought the DT position looked odd.

Quarterback:

*1. Blaine Gabbert, Missouri

2. Jake Locker, Washington

*3. Cam Newton, Auburn

*4. Ryan Mallett, Arkansas

5. Andy Dalton, TCU

Running back:

*1. Mark Ingram, Alabama

2. Mikel LeShoure, Illinois

*3. Daniel Thomas, Kansas State

*4. Ryan Williams, Virginia Tech

*5. Jacquizz Rodgers, Oregon State

Wide receiver:

*1. A.J. Green, Georgia

*2. Julio Jones, Alabama

3. Titus Young, Boise State

*4. Jonathan Baldwin, Pittsburgh

*5. Torrey Smith

Tight end:

*1. Kyle Rudolph, Notre Dame

2. Lance Kendricks, Wisconsin

3. Luke Stocker, Tennessee

4. D.J. Williams, Arkansas

5. Virgil Green, Nevada

Guard/center:

1. Mike Pouncey, Florida

2. Danny Watkins, Baylor

3. Clint Boling, Georgia

4. John Moffitt, Wisconsin

5. Rodney Hudson, Florida State

Tackle:

1. Anthony Castanzo, Boston College

2. Nate Solder, Colorado

*3. Tyron Smith, Southern California

4. Gabe Carimi, Wisconsin

T-5. Ben Ijalana, Villanova

T-5. Derek Sherrod, Mississippi State

Defensive end:

*1. Da'Quan Bowers, Clemson

*2. J.J. Watt, Wisconsin

3. Adrian Clayborn, Iowa

4. Cameron Jordan, California

*5. Robert Quinn, North Carolina

Defensive tackle:

*1. Marcell Dareus, Alabama

*2. Nick Fairley, Auburn

*3. Corey Liuget, Illinois

4. Stephen Paea, Oregon State

*5. Jurrell Casey, Southern California

Outside Linebacker:

1. Von Miller, Texas A&M

*2. Akeem Ayers, UCLA

*3. Justin Houston, Georgia

4. Bruce Carter, North Carolina

5. Chris Carter, Fresno State

Inside Linebacker:

*1. Martez Wilson, Illinois

2. Colin McCarthy, Miami (Fla.)

3. Quan Sturdivant, North Carolina

4. Casey Matthews, Oregon

5. Kelvin Sheppard, LSU

Cornerback:

*1. Patrick Peterson, LSU

2. Prince Amukamara

*3. Aaron Williams, Texas

4. Jimmy Smith, Colorado

*5. Brandon Harris, Miami (Fla.)

Safety:

*1. Rahim Moore, UCLA

2. Ahmad Black, Florida

3. Marcus Gilchrist, Clemson

4. Quinton Carter, Oklahoma

5. Deunta Williams, North Carolina

Did you miss the part of the article that says he hasn't updated his draft board since January?

I guess so...

TODAY HE SAID with his own mouth, IN THE VIDEO I LINKED, that Newton could be considered by Arizona and Cincinnati at 5 and 4.

Here it is again...

He hasn't updated the board since jan. In the full interview he said Gabbert's stock is sliping and in his new big board Cam will be ahead of him. The new big board will be up mid-next week. The one everyone is refering to is the one put up before the media workout.

The Big Board was updated February 2nd. The Mock Draft hasn't been updated since January.

The ESPN interview posted above came after the workout. It doesn't mention Blaine Gabbert at all, much less say that Newton is now ahead of him.

What Kiper does say is that Newton is "rising to the point where the Cardinals or Bills might consider him", but also said hat his intangibles need to rise before he can cement status as a top five pick.

He certainly could change his rankings, but he hasn't yet, and nowhere in the interview does he say he's going to.

You want to argue for Newton? Fine, but making stuff up doesn't help your case.

He also said the workout was to create a positive buzz, and Newton accomplished that. He also said Newton is the star of the draft, and the talk of the draft, and has phenomenal arm strength.

But somehow, his comments today don't supersede a board he released weeks ago? :smilielol5:

Try February 2nd.

Kiper also said there are still concerns about his intangibles and doesn't believe he can rise to a top five pick unless those are satisfied. His point about the workout was that it would serve to focus attention on his physical skills and away from his intangibles, but the intangibles are still a question.

Bottom Line: The OP is wrong. Kiper does not have Newton as his top QB. He might in the future, or he might not, but he doesn't now so the thread title is wrong.

First of all i have no agenda. I like newton clearly..u don't. Everything i've post in this article is 100% what was said in the interview the clip above is just that a clip. It doesnt show the whole interview if anyone else watch sportscenter or nfl live they could clearly back me up.

The rankings have changed but all you can see is the old board because he hasn't put out the new one. He said out of his mouth Newton would be ahead of Gabbert and that his stock is slipping a bit. not out of the top 10 but he would need to fight to go ahead of newton at this point.

Ah yes, the old "I saw it on Sportscenter but I can't find it online" bit.

I'm sure

    • I mean it's not even like this was his worst game of the season... I'm not done with him by any means but this feels more the norm for him than the exception:/
    • I'd give it a C mainly because of Brooks.  If we just didn't have a 2nd I'd argue B to B+ tbh. Brooks was a bad gamble, tho one that could still pay off long term. Yes XL only has 400 yards but... Look who is throwing him the ball. And I think he isn't a "true #1" but he's been able to consistently get open. Hands definitely need to be cleaned up.  But he should end the year with 500-600 yards. Like you said - Sanders looks great.  Get him a better QB / more time with a QB and I think he's gonna impress. We added a couple rotational players on D that have both made plays and show promise for the future from later rounds. So I'd say, Brooks really hurts this drafts grade. It'll be interesting to see how it progresses over the next 3 years. I've overall really liked Morgan's FA acquisitions, so...
    • Oh he would absolutely flourish. It’s the panthers way. It’s no different with coaches. Sometimes they reach their expiration date, go somewhere else, and find new success.  Similarly to Burns, how long to wait for the light to finally turn on?  Market forces will demand a salary that the panthers can not responsibly match. Sliding him to guard will fit his skill set better, but he has played LT for 3 years. He will receive offers from other teams wanting to pay him LT money.  At guard, he won’t start with what they have paid Hunt and Lewis. Center then?? Dunno. Maybe? He will become a backup by default once they draft their stud LT. I doubt Dan just stands pat. That’s not his MO.  So where does this put him? Can you match what other teams will offer for a backup LT/guard? Do you dish out franchise LT $ on a guy who still needs significant improvement in pass protection. This team will be DOA in the playoffs with the very first team who has a formidable speed rusher. What if he has hit his ceiling in pass protection already and they sign him long term? It’s a big gamble either way.
