Kiper has Cam as one of the first QB off the board

Of course he does. The Panthers are gonna draft him 1st overall.

I'd be happy with that. Also be happy with trading down. Really, after this season, those would be the two most exciting things possible. Drafting a DT???/ Yawn.

I'm starting to think it's more and more likely...

We had the worst QB play in the history of our franchise last year.

Hurney has already said QB is our #1 concern, and we will use the draft to address it if we need to.

The QB Free Agency market is nothing but backups and more backups, if we even get a shot at a Free Agent cause of CBA issues.

Newton's stock is skyrocketing.

Nothing but upside.

Keep in mind that Kiper is getting his information from his NFL insider contacts, and that happened even before this workout. Say what you will, but there aren't many people more connected than Kiper when it comes to draft information. Also, when Kiper was on today, the host (don't know the guys' name) said that an NFL GM told him that Newton was farther along than Vince Young was at this point, and he was the #3 overall pick.

It was obvious to me that this was going to happen, and I believe Cam's stock will rise even higher before it's over because he's going to impress scouts and GM's in the interview process too. Wait and see.

Matt Bowen of the National Football Post has a different take...

Don't buy the Cam Newton hype just yet

What did you expect from Cam Newton yesterday in an orchestrated workout in front of the media? A show put on by his father that didn’t include a single scout, coach or GM from the NFL. For a player that is projected as a top talent in the draft, what he did in shorts shouldn't come as a surprise. He looked the part according to reports, threw the ball like a pro QB and got the post workout reaction he wanted--complete with the extra hype. But that wasn't an NFL workout.

(The Combine) is the real interview with the NFL—and exactly what they want. See them perform under pressure. The basic theory behind the Combine and the follow-up pro day. Test them under tough circumstances. I’ve worked out in Indy and it is the ultimate job interview.

All Newton did yesterday was look good in front of the cameras, and the league scouts I talked to aren’t buying it.

They want to see it under their rules, in their workouts. One scout I spoke with on Thursday said that the entire workout “doesn’t make sense” and nothing that happened will impact how he grades out Newton leading up to the draft. Another scout even laughed at the entire idea—calling it a “publicity stunt.”

As one scout told me down in Mobile during the Senior Bowl, it is going to take an NFL team one year to find out what type of player Newton is and one year to find out what type of character he has. There is some risk involved.

What took place on Thursday was a free look. That’s it. This wasn’t a test by NFL standards. Instead, an opportunity for the media to check out one of the hottest names in the draft. A player that has been in the news for a lot of the wrong reasons since he left the University of Florida and headed over to Auburn.

But let’s cool the hype for now. This is a long process. Newton might end up being a top ten or even a top five pick. There are quarterback hungry teams at the top of the draft that can’t win on Sundays with their current depth charts at the position. Or we could see a steady decline from the Combine until late April when the names are finally announced at the draft.

We are all going to have opinions and I’m saving mine until the NFL gets a real look at Cam Newton—when it counts.

Not sure where the info came for the title of this thread but on Kiper's web page and on all of his updated mock drafts, he still has Blaine Gabbert as his #1 QB with Cam #2. Unless he is twittering now, i don't think this has changed.

You're correct. The info in the thread title is false.

Kiper's latest mock has Gabbert going to the Cardinals at #5 and Newton to the Redskins at #10.

On his Big Board, he has Gabbert at #9, Newton at #13.

Nick Fairley is still #1 on both.

i just don's see it for being anything more than what it was said to be...a chance for people to see what he is doing to prepare. people will either be impressed with what he's doing to get ready or not. he's going to be doing that stuff regardless, just like everyone else.

i can't remember who i saw that said this, but at the senior bowl there were 6 temas represented who said that newton is their top prospect or at least the #1 guy on the board. there are probably more than that and there are probably those who feel a lot like many doubters do. the media day wasn't going to change much of anyone's perspective on him. the only ones who i can see being swayed one way or the other are those who didn't think he was working on much, but thats a small group i would guess.

wonderlic and interviews are where he can help himself the most at this point.

And there may be, but this is the time of year when you should always have your salt shaker ready when teams make public statements about draft prospects.

No, the OP is correct.

http://seattle.sbnation.com/seattle-seahawks/2011/2/11/1988779/2011-nfl-mock-draft-mel-kiper-cam-newton-jake-locker-draft-stock

Mel Kiper hasn't released a second 2011 NFL mock draft since dropping his first version on the world back in January, but he has made changes to his "Big Board" and picked apart some of the top prospects recently. On Friday, it was Cam Newton and Jake Locker in his cross-hairs, but both received strikingly different reviews. Newton, fresh off his workout in front of the media was praised by Kiper while Locker, fresh off a less than Stellar Senior Bowl performance, was picked apart.

Kiper opines Newton could find himself in the top-10, if not the top-five. It's the intangibles -- and the football smarts -- that will determine how high Newton goes, according to Kiper. While Newton's physical skills are clearly outstanding, it's going to take working through the interview process for teams in the top-10 to be completely sold on spending a high pick on the former Auburn quarterback.

Here he is saying it directly..

Arizona at 5, or Cincy at 4, has to consider him.

Locker has fallen out of the top ten.

really sounds like he may be moving newton up from what he says he's been hearing around the league. according to him, people are really buying into the buzz.

    • I mean it's not even like this was his worst game of the season... I'm not done with him by any means but this feels more the norm for him than the exception:/
    • I'd give it a C mainly because of Brooks.  If we just didn't have a 2nd I'd argue B to B+ tbh. Brooks was a bad gamble, tho one that could still pay off long term. Yes XL only has 400 yards but... Look who is throwing him the ball. And I think he isn't a "true #1" but he's been able to consistently get open. Hands definitely need to be cleaned up.  But he should end the year with 500-600 yards. Like you said - Sanders looks great.  Get him a better QB / more time with a QB and I think he's gonna impress. We added a couple rotational players on D that have both made plays and show promise for the future from later rounds. So I'd say, Brooks really hurts this drafts grade. It'll be interesting to see how it progresses over the next 3 years. I've overall really liked Morgan's FA acquisitions, so...
    • Oh he would absolutely flourish. It’s the panthers way. It’s no different with coaches. Sometimes they reach their expiration date, go somewhere else, and find new success.  Similarly to Burns, how long to wait for the light to finally turn on?  Market forces will demand a salary that the panthers can not responsibly match. Sliding him to guard will fit his skill set better, but he has played LT for 3 years. He will receive offers from other teams wanting to pay him LT money.  At guard, he won’t start with what they have paid Hunt and Lewis. Center then?? Dunno. Maybe? He will become a backup by default once they draft their stud LT. I doubt Dan just stands pat. That’s not his MO.  So where does this put him? Can you match what other teams will offer for a backup LT/guard? Do you dish out franchise LT $ on a guy who still needs significant improvement in pass protection. This team will be DOA in the playoffs with the very first team who has a formidable speed rusher. What if he has hit his ceiling in pass protection already and they sign him long term? It’s a big gamble either way.
