I think a good DT is a good DT, system be damned. Same for DEs. Good personnel will adhere to and it into a good system. Good system means much more than just Xs' and Os' on a blackboard, its all about how well the coaches implementing the schemes are at communicating responsibilities, roles, reads, etc., etc. I'm confident the scouts in this league will do as they always do, and find the real gems in the middle and late rounds..

Agreed

It all comes down to coaching and the player executing on the field .

Not neccessarily. Of course a good player is going to succeed in one way or another wherever he goes. But our two DTs are 345, and a squat 312. Jenkins was even bigger. In what circumstance would you think that a Defensive Tackle that is 6-4 and weighs 300 would do well in our system? You cannot discount the system, as much as you would like to.

And that's the problem. It's not that they fit on one system or another, it's this is a very small class of DTs. And that's bad for us

Brenston Buckner 6'2" 310 did well in this system

I'll stick with my orginal comment

Correct coaching and player execution will work in any scheme

Lots of fans sterotype players , have to be this tall or this big to play this position or this scheme .

DO some research and you find that we have had several in that range. How about Carstans. He was just coming into his own when he had medical problems. How about Tony Brown, Jovan Hayes, Al Wallace, Gary Gibson, Kindal Moorehead, Eric Swann, Darwin Walker, Nick Hayden who have all played for us, are playing for us and have contributed to varying degrees. But to say a guy who is 6-4 and 300 lbs can't play in our system is not true at all.

There isn't a DT in this class as good as Glen Dorsey or Sedrick Ellis, and look at the splash those two made last year.

DTs need to be bigger in the 3-4, and DEs needs to be better against the run. It's the linebacker positions where you get the real big differences between the two defenses.

the thing is what we are calling DEs in the 4-3 in this years draft are said to be better suited to be OLBs in th 3-4 all the top rated DEs are said to be OLBs in the 3-4. that makes it harder for us to find a true 4-3 DE

That often is just an opinion and not always an informed one. Largely because few teams run a 3-4 in the college game so most of these guys are in a 4-3 now. But because they are a little on the light side and don't shed blocks well, they are relegated to a 3-4 OLB status. There have been a number of DEs in the 255-265 range that have done well in the 4-3 scheme.

And who knows, some players are just good enough in College, but really come into their own in the pros. Sometimes you never know...

That's why I don't pay too much attention to Kiper and his ilk, if they knew what they were doing they would be a GM on a team instead of evaluating talent for ESPN.
