So let me get this straight, you guys hate Clausen and Edwards yet...

My preferred approach is still to give them a year or so to adjust to the pro game before throwing them into the fire. Even if we could draft Luck, I'd still prefer he sit a year.

This season, I thnk Clausen gets the first shot at starting. If he fails, then whatever vet pickup the team has made becomes the fallback / failsafe. If, at the end of the season, Clausen still isn't up to snuff, we go QB hunting next year when the pickings won't be quite so slim.

makes sense to me...i just think that the vet should be someone who has a shot (even a small one) at being the fulltime guy. we're just spinning our wheels otherwise.

if newton does impress the panthers (and i really hope he does and he's worth it) then i do feel that we should get him, even with the first. he's the only guy in the draft i have any interest, though, and it has everything to do with his upside.

if we don't get him, though, sticking with clausen and trying to bring in a young vet to compete/act as a failsafe, and then picking up the best QB the following year makes sense. it would be great if it is done with an extra pick we get in the first round next year from a team who trades up and then winds up with the first pick next year.

I'm sure in one off-season Clausen will get taller, completely fix his screwed up delivery, add a ton of arm strength and overcome his phobia of a pass rush all while learning a new offensive system.

I'm also sure Rivera is willing to hitch his wagon to a journeyman/Clausen tandem for a few years in his first HC gig. I'm sure he's fine going for 4 or 5 wins this season (hi Volek) and hoping Luck declares next season. Or the one after that.

I can pretty much guarantee you he's not getting cut or traded.

Regardless of how we feel about it, they are committed to giving him his shot.

I personally don't think he'll pan out, but logically speaking, giving up on him after one season with a lame duck head coach and an unsuccessful QB coach doesn't really make sense.

I think this year's vet pickup will be purely a stopgap, essentially Rodney Peete part deux.

Also still believe Matt Moore gets a chance to come to camp.

but at the same time......do you think it makes sense to run Mike Goodson like you would Jerome Bettis?? Goodson doesn't have that skill set no matter how much a team might need that type of runner. Doesn't mean Goodson can't be productive.....but if you run him like that you are going to get anywhere. You are going to have a lot of guys looking bad for no reason.....

Clausen doesn't seem to fit an offensive scheme that relies on the vertical pass. I mean, for the good of the team......why waste everyone's time on something that doesn't look to have realistic potential to work? I mean, while looking for a franchise QB.....a vet w/ no real future can at least let the rest of the offense work and get better. The team as a whole at least can be more competitive until they find someone who looks to fit.

said it probably a million times so far, but i just don't like that idea and see little long term benefit. it's too much like foxball.

Personally, I'm sick and tired of stopgaps. We have been playing stopgap QB's since Kerry Collins quit on us.

stop gaps can work.....2003-2007 Delhomme. Not a great QB. He fit Fox's offense though....and allowed the collective offense to be pretty decent.

Problem was they didn't look to develop and find a future QB.

I mean, finding a guy who can allow Chud's offense to run imo is the most important thing right now.

Because the team isn't sold on the notion that he has "No realistic potential to work" in this system. Whether we are or not doesn't matter.

It would be exciting to watch a Randalll Cunningham again, but I want a SuperBowl so until proven wrong I need a Big white laser rocket arm'd quarterback.

A guy doesn't have to be white to be a pocker passer. Steve McNair, Warren Moon, Byron Leftwich and David Garrard are all guys that could be capable pocket passers.

well, we don't really know what they think.....we know the sugar coated new coach has arrived talk.

Rivera/Chud imo have clearly made an emphasis on talking about "aggressive" and "downfield" when they talk offense. I also don't think anyone has really said anything positve about Clausen. They beat around the bush about "finding" guys and about giving guys chances.

Compare, if you will, Cam Newton's possible ability and work ethic to Warren Moon please?

I always liked Moon, and thought he was a hell of a player. If Cam is even remotely close to him in terms of physical tools and intangibles, I'd be ok with drafting him. If he isn't, then let's do the wait and see imo.

so let's say Clausen does what most QBs do in the NFL.....they don't dramatically improve going into year 2.

you would prefer to just play him and prevent Chud's offense from even remotely fuctioning (it does put an emphasis on the vertical attack). That means everyone on both sides of the ball get put behind the 8 ball while trying to pick up and install a the new offense/Rivera systems. That also puts a delay on the growth of young recievers like AE, Gettis, and LaFell and the offense in general.

that would do more good then bringing in a band aid that could remotely allow Rivera's team to get the ground work going?

i don';t want any short term band aid stop gap solutions. i want real long term competition in here...or at least as close as we can get. if clausen can't be beat out by the guys that get brought in, then he should start. if he he can get beat out, then the guy that beats him should. i would say that none of the guys brought in for competition should be over 30. call it agism or whatever, but i only want guys who could potentially be here for years. none of the old guys whose names are being thrown around are any better than the young guys, so i'd just rather go that route.

make sense?

    • At this rate, maybe he'll be a decent 8-9 QB on his 3rd HC by year 6. Standards are so low around here now. Tepper has done some serious damage to the fan base.
