If you took two teams and they both played the exact same schedule both in conference (pretend they are in a weird conference and they play everybody except each other) and out of conference. They play 4 out of conference games against the 4 best teams in the country and 8 conference games

Team A loses all 4 non-conference games by a combined score of 160-0. But then runs the table in conference but have three overtime games, and win 5 more on last second field goals.

Team B also goes 0-4 in the out of conference games but every game is decided by 5 points or less. Then they go to conference and destroy everybody with and average margin of victory of 42 points per game.

By Sagarin ratings there would be no difference in these two teams, they would be rated the same despite the fact that clearly team B is the better team.

Therefore, the Sagarin is flawed.

Again, this isn't about the better team. It's about tougher schedules.

The Pac10 isn't afraid to play anyone and they've proven it year after year. The SEC prefers to schedule cupcakes and in state rivals and try and coast to the title

I looked at all of the PAC-10's out of conference games this year they didn't exactly over extend themselves in the out of conference schedule and the few times they did they lost. None of the bowl eligible teams in the conference played a top 25 team in an out of conference game with the sole exception of Washington playing Nebraska (the first time which they lost 56-21). Doesn't make them a stronger conference at all. The more I look at this the weaker this argument is becoming.

the pac ten plays scrub schools in weak conferences that pile up wins... looks good while sec beats up on each other along with mid to top teams of other major conferences who will have 3 to 5 losses. there is no question the SEC is the best conference in football and have been for years now

It's not an opinion. The ratings show the Pac10 had the 10 toughest schedules. I don't know what your argument is.

My argument is that the pac 10 is a cake walk compared to the sec.they have the easiest schedule compared to the sec.

But the whole reason we are even talking about SOS is because you are using it to imply the PAC-10 has better teams than the SEC.

To put it another way, if a PAC-10 team plays a top 5 team and loses, when another team loses to that team the are penalized less and when they win they get rewarded more because of a loss.

But if an SEC team plays a crappy team and wins, if another SEC team beats that team they are rewarded less but if they lose they are penalized more even though it is a win.

The 3 losses against Boise, TCU, and Nevada inflates every team in the conference's overall SOS and makes it appear stronger than it really is. Even though they lost all three games.

Thanks for telling me the SEC is the toughest, I didn't know. Too bad they play cupcakes all year. If you want to challenge yourself you play a real schedule like the Pac10 played. 8 of the top 10 toughest schedules in the country came from the Pac10. If SEC didn't have to play the Little10 in all of it's bowl games they might get exposed.

Pac10 gets no respect from anyone not on the west coast, usually because they are asleep when they play their games then in bowl games they get matched up with teams they aren't supposed to beat. It happens every year. I would love it if the SEC and Pac10 got to play games like the SEC and Big10 did because I think those are the two best conferences in football.

If the Pac10 had a championship game, Auburn would likely have played Stanford and that would be a tougher test for them I think.

Are you saying beating the Citadel should carry more positive weight than losing two road games against top 5 teams?
