The SEC had 10 of 12 teams bowl eligible this year. Pac-10 had 4 out of twelve. That is because they struggled in their out of conference games.

...Which is why you need to look at their strength of schedule, including out of conference games, to see which played a tougher schedule.

Yeah but like I said earlier I feel their SOS is inflated because they played Boise, Nevada, and TCU which have a combined record of 37-2. All losses. So even though it makes the overall SOS higher it doesn't necessarily means they (as a whole) played a tougher out of conference schedule.

They have less games against non-conferece games which can be read two different. One, they don't play as much weak competition. But also they have less opportunities to lose to those weaker teams.

If they get through the only three non-conference games in good shape they will prop up each other up in the SOS calculations and the losses won't hurt as much and the wins will count for more.

You also should consider the quality of wins in those records.

For instance, the SEC west has a 27-2 record. In those wins these include wins over UNC, Oregon, Clemson, Texas A&M (x2), Penn State, Michigan, West Virginia, and Michigan State.

The Pac-10 however, their big wins were Tennessee, Virginia Tech, Notre Dame, and Nebraska.

That is 10 quality wins versus 4 (if you really consider Tennessee and ND quality wins, which I do). You could argue the the SEC west deserves bonus points because they had 4 wins against top 25 teams (including two top 10 teams) and PAC-10 had 2 and no wins against top 10 teams.

Okay let me be more clear.

The Top 10 SOS consists of all Pac10 teams.

The toughest SOS the SEC had was #11.

Tell me how 11 is tougher than 10,9,8,7,6,5,4,3,2, or 1.

Thanks

My point is that SOS is meaningless if you don't win those games. The PAC-10 only has one truly great win, Stanford over VT.

That's a different argument though.

The Pac10 isn't afraid to play anyone and they've proven it year after year. The SEC prefers to schedule cupcakes and in state rivals and try and coast to the title

If you took two teams and they both played the exact same schedule both in conference (pretend they are in a weird conference and they play everybody except each other) and out of conference. They play 4 out of conference games against the 4 best teams in the country and 8 conference games

Team A loses all 4 non-conference games by a combined score of 160-0. But then runs the table in conference but have three overtime games, and win 5 more on last second field goals.

Team B also goes 0-4 in the out of conference games but every game is decided by 5 points or less. Then they go to conference and destroy everybody with and average margin of victory of 42 points per game.

By Sagarin ratings there would be no difference in these two teams, they would be rated the same despite the fact that clearly team B is the better team.

Therefore, the Sagarin is flawed.

The Pac 10 also aren't afraid to get their asses kicked, as it turns out. Tell me, how did the Pac 10 fare when it mattered against the SEC?
