Cam Newton Workout Phenomenal

Anyone can see that Cam padded his stats against the soft SEC and Sunbelt this year and struggled against the Pac10 and ACC.

SEC West was not "soft". The SEC as a whole may have been down a bit this year but it was still the best conference in football. And as an ACC fan it pains me to say that because that conference is always over hyped and ESPN loves on it too much.

Just this year the margin wasn't as great as it has been in past years.

Plus I'm not so sure that gaining 320+ yards and throwing 2 touchdowns would classify as a "struggle". In the case of the Oregon game.

You needed to watch the game to see the struggle. He averaged 2.9 ypc because he couldn't handle Oregon's defensive team speed, which will be what it's like in the NFL. Also, aside from 2 broken coverages, he looked mediocre in the passing game.

He also turned it over 2 and almost cost his team the game at the end.

I did watch the game, and was cognizant of the fact that Oregon has @ 5 weeks to prepare for Auburn and he still turned in a great game.

Same reason the Ducks didn't have a normally explosive offensive game against an average Auburn defense (especially since they played in the awesome PAC-10). Because Auburn had 5 weeks to prepare for them as well.

Again 320+ yards and two touchdowns is not a struggle. Starting 10 games and only throwing 3 td's and 9 int's is struggling.

If his championship game is what constitutes a "struggle" you have further solidified my position on the guy.

On a side note, if you wanted to cherry pick games Peyton Manning never played well against Florida so would you have had similar reservations??

I usually find the Sagarin ratings to be pretty helpful in coming up with a farily solid system of comparison across huge numbers of teams that don't necessarily play one another:

http://www.usatoday.com//sports/sagarin/fbc10.htm

Sagarin is a great service and i like them a lot, but the Pac-10 gets a lot of credit in their SOS from three beat downs they took against TCU, Nevada, and Boise State, whom have a combined record of 37-2 but may or may not be BCS Championship caliber teams (depending on who you talk to).

We really, really shouldn't try to measure if we should take Cam Newton based on Clausen's numbers last season. Cam Newton being an upgrade over what Clausen was last year is not enough reason to take Cam Newton first overall.

The hell it isn't.

We'll know more in three weeks, but the draft might be the only option for a QB upgrade if there isn't a CBA signed.

TCU was a great team and they beat OSU by 9 at home, after Oregon State matched them score for score until a bad snap and a safety, hardly a beatdown.

Nevada did beat down Cal but Nevada is the real deal as well.

And again Oregon State went on the road against a top 5 team and played okay.

When was the last time an SEC school went out of conference in the first couple weeks on the road against a top 5 team?

I remember the Pac10 coming to the SEC's house and beating that ass early in the year but the SEC is scared to leave the south east.
