Cam Newton Workout Phenomenal

Honestly, I bet that Cam Newton himself wants to throw at the combine because he seems like the kind of guy that wants to prove he can do anything. But, I don't think his team will let him. This isn't that unusual, sure, but Cam Newton isn't a typical quarterback going into draft day.

With only a single season of film, and with that single season of film really not being as informative about his passing game as he would like, I personally think he should take every opportunity to throw. While I kind of doubt the Panthers will fall in love with him either way, I think the more often he does throw and does show how he is improving the more likely he is to go higher and higher. Interviews will be absolutely key, though, and ultimately more important than throwing there. Still, I think if he really wants to go top 5, he should use every opportunity to get people to fall in love with him.

I admit, part of wanting him to participate in the combine is so I can see more of him, though I doubt I'll get any good views anyway.

I dont understand why we're considering picking a defensive player with the first pick. I dont see Fairley having the same upside as Cam Newton. Our defense was not our biggest struggle last year. Our defense STAYED on the field because our offense was ranked LAST. And since we know our running game isnt the problem, and our offensive line will be healthy again.... Our GREATEST need is to address QB/ WR concerns. Cam Newton can be THAT guy. Im telling you... The Panthers biggest issue is that we dont pull the trigger on guys like him because we're trying to play it safe. You dont win Superbowls with Safe.

he can only help himself by throwing anytime someone is taking a look.

i understand why The Golden Calf of Bristol didn't because he just wasn't all that good of a thrower and had a lot of things to work out. newton is a much better passer so he doesn't have nearly the inadequacies to cover up and hide The Golden Calf of Bristol did.

I don't really see how WR is one of our greatest concerns... unless you believe Smitty is lost.

On offense, product wise, QB is the biggest need, followed IMO by TE and then RG. Now, TE is a spot we may actually have what we need already, Fox just really sucked at utilizing TEs. There is no RG even close to what we need.

If we think Smitty may not be here we do need a WR... and AJ Green is explosive.

Still, DT is a bigger need than WR. We've had terrible DTs for a long time. At some point, we need to correct that.

Actually, it's a myth that the Panthers didn't throw to the TE's while Fox was here. It just seems that way because we don't have one TE that catches all the passes. If you add of the stats of the 3 TE's on the team though, they're actually pretty darn good for a team that hasn't had a good passing game anyway.

Not a myth, it's backed up by the numbers, at least compared to some offenses. I put together a post about Chud's offense in Cleveland but I got lazy and never finished it, so I actually have these numbers on hand. Our TEs still have a lower percent of our catches than in Chud's and Turners offense. In 2008, when Chud's offense looked like crap, he still threw the ball 70 times to TEs (31% of their offense, 27% in 2007), compared to the 41 times we did it this year (16%)... and just FYI, the 2008 Browns threw the ball fewer times than we did. In 2009, we threw it to the TE 23% of the time. In 2008, it was 15.8%.

In Turner's offense this year, they threw it 22% of the time to a TE this year... despite Antonio Gates being beaten up as all hell. If he hadn't missed time, woulda been higher. It was 26% in 2009.

So in summary... We may have the guy we want, but we don't know... because our offense didn't really go to the TE like the one Chud is likely to implement.

Edit: BTW, this is not to say you need to throw to a TE to be successful all, just that we may expect that if Turner/Chud's offense comes in, it will utilize the TE differently.

In 2009, Rosario, King, and Barnidge combined for 63 catches, 855yds, and 5 TD's. Steve Smith had 65 catches that season. It is a myth that the Panthers and John Fox didn't use TE's in the passing game, at least after Henning was fired. They may not have featured the TE like some teams, but they sure as hell weren't ignoring them either. That was was a pretty bad year for the passing game as well.

I don't care about last year, because that was a total waste all the way around.
