Cam Newton Workout Phenomenal

Then why does every scout go to the combine?? Might as well stay home and watch film right. Why do they even have private workouts?? Just watch film right??

1) I said mean little, not mean nothing.

2) Game film always means more than workouts, no matter who runs them.

3) When scouts are running workouts, they are able to set up what they want to see, how they want to see it. This is different from a workout they can't even attend on things they may or may not be super concerned with shown in ways that may make it impossible to be able to determine if it is a great deal of improvement or just choreography.

Note, I DID NOT see much of what went on, so parts of #3 are pure speculation...

BCG Let's be honest and objective here!!!!!

The work out did not show he could make offensive adjustment... it more so went to showing that he is a coachable player!!!

Cam has some things going for him.

1) Hands down he is an athletic, physical, fit player for the QB position. QB's have his attributes does not come along often.

2) He is showing that he is coachable!! I say that for two reasons...1st) He showed today that he can listen and make adjustments with good coaching (This happen when Warren Moon had a quick discussion to fix some a error he was making on his passes, and he did and it showed.... 2nd) It has been said and I find it true that he has showed progress in every game he's played this year.... This improving from coaching.

3) Some people have his Character/ Dedication/ Ethics is a negative, A lot say a huge question mark, I actually believe it is a positive. From what I've seen I think that he has the will of fire in him to be great and do whatever necessary to win. He does not come off immature like VY, or Lazy and $$$ hungry like Jawalrus Russel. I think he has more of the Brady, Rodgers, other elite QB in him to do what it takes to win and be elite.

Now for the Major negative....

1) Unproven in that he can make the NFL reads/ quick decisions to be successful. It is a fact that Cam only threw the ball 280 times this year mostly from shotgun while running the ball almost just as many times with 264 carries. He was 80th in the NCAA in passing attempts and less than some players who were injured during the season....This backups the fact the he is very inexperience in really throwing the ball (in their run first offense) let alone executing a pass first or pro style oriented pass attack.

Everyone pretty much agrees that his offense was a very simple, easy read offense. NOW THIS DOES NOT MEAN HE CAN NOT LEARN.... only that it is a risk that he may not get to the point where he can quickly make NFL type reads... That is a Huge jump to make from where he is now! That is the huge risk factor.

It was even said today that in order to prepare for the NFL he has just started working on reading defensive fronts, nickel backs and their blitzes, and another time of rush/coverage... fire zone or something I think. This goes to shows he has A LOT to learn, and he knows there is a lot he needs to learn.

This is what gets a lot of players trying to make that jump from College to the NFL. The game never slows down for them. They study all the tape, do all the preparation, but they just can't do it.

An example of this is Brady Quinn. The coaches has later said he has the BEST work ethics, the will to be great, always first in and the last out.... But it wasn't enough... He just wasn't capable, the game never slowed down for him. I'm sure Jimmy want's to be great... You can see fire and dedication from some QB's who suck... Derek Anderson... But it does not guarantee successful. The same way it can not be guaranteed the game will slow down for CAM just with hard work and because he wants it too.

So that's the risk in my opinion. He has a huge jump to make the countless others have failed in terms of learning offenses, establishing control over it, and making the game slow down enough for him. Can he do it??? YES, but there is also a high chance he can't, which is where the RISK in drafting him is.

Still at the end of the day, right now I believe he is worth the risk. The upside is massive if he can make that jump. I believe it might take a couple of years, but I do think he can get there. And if he does he will be our franchise QB leading us to great things for years and years to come.

I'll add that the negatives you posted are true of every QB that has ever been drafted.

This isn't even close to being true. There are plenty of College QB's that have shown they can go through their progressions and make the reads necessary of them at the next level....

So it does mean something, yet Maycock has decided it doesn't at all in Cam's case? Maycock had Pike his 5th best QB last year. Maybe he should have watched some of his workouts.

Sadly, one clip of one highlight on one game is often all it takes for some fans to proclaim "this guy is the greatest player ever; we've got to get him " :nonod:

and sadly people wright off players just as quickly. To brush off a former NFL QBs opinion and to say yours is better is just down right silly. None of us know what Dilfer knows and has experienced. He is a better source then any of us.

Exactly its the whole body of work that come into play. What I gained from this is that he was comfortable throwing and doing it from and NFL set. Now that does not make him great but it does show how fast of a learner he is. We need a Smart QB to run the Coryell System.

workouts don't mean a lot. private workouts not run by scouts mean even less. there, you happy now? =p

who exactly do you think was the 5th best QB last year if not Pike, btw? lol.

I haven't even seen enough of it to say anything about how comfortable he was throwing. Where did you find the film?

Clausen and Quinn come to mind. Plus Cam has shown he can go throughe his progressions. A lot of the one read and run plays were by design, but that wasn't the crux of Auburn's offense and on true pass plays he often showed the ability to go through his progression, stay in the pocket, and make good decisions. More often than not the second half of the season when he passed more than ran.

Not true.... Some QB's have had more experience passing, having to make NFL type reads, make NFL type adjustments at the line, and run an NFL style offense with similar plays and terminology. So no what I posted is not true of every QB to be drafted.

Not really. In fact, in any draft, you'll have a variety of concerns about different players.

So is Mike Mayock.

Dilfer's wrong sometimes too. They all are.
