Cam Newton Workout Phenomenal

what about trade back a couple spots and still draft him?

Fine by me if after evaluations and interviews he is the F.O. number 1 on the big board. I would think if there would be a prospect that teams would be trading to number one to get though it would be Newton. I mean maybe Green but that's the only other guy I see teams moving up for....

how upset would you be if the panthers did end up drafting newton?

If we did it at number one, I would think it was a huge mistake. If we traded back and did it, I'd still feel it was a mistake but I wouldn't be quite as annoyed.

(heck, I think it'd be a mistake to take any QB in any round in this draft, but you already know that)

As with any other mistake the team has made in the past though, I'd hope that eventually it would be proven that they were right and I was wrong.

For the record, I was pretty ticked off when they drafted Clausen (friend who was with me at the time could tell you quite the story  ) because I felt they'd blown their shot at getting a top flight receiver. When Brandon LaFell was still there with our next pick though, I calmed down.

And for the record, KT's notion that people would actually stop being Panther fans if they drafted Newton is just plain stupid (but then, what's new?) :frown2:

if you think one of the quarterbacks in this draft is a future elite player, you take him at #1. you don't fool around with trying to trade back to pick him up later in the first, fug that. if you believe in him enough to invest the team's first pick in him, you have to take him at #1 and not risk trading down... unless you just think there are two guys at the position that have the same potential and know one would somehow be available.

I have never been against Cam Newton being a Panther, I just am not on board with taking him #1 right now. My own admitted problem with that position is that I don't have any idea who we should take at #1. While I was happy with Cam earlier in the season the more I saw of him the less comfortable I actually became with him, as strange as that sounds.

I am more concerned because the games I did see him in he was not showing a style of play anything like what can expect in the NFL. At the same time, I recognize that doesn't make it impossible for him to transition, I just think his could potentially be more rocky than some other prospects. I also am not as blown away by his stats as other people are, which causes people to think I'm a "hater."

I mean, the guy has all the physical measurables that you would love to have in a quarterback... but he's not the only one, even in this draft class, you can say that about... If Cam can overcome his bad footwork (which he is actively working on and has apparently improved upon greatly), good. If he is as smart football wise as some say, he'll undoubtedly be capable of adjusting from his current offense to an NFL offense. But these are questions I don't know. I want to see how he does at the combine, under conditions slight more outside his control, before I really decide much more.

The two great things to have come out of today because of this:

1) We found out Cam was going to the Combine,

2) Our #1 pick probably increased in value a bit.

I think it'll be hilarious if Newton comes in, sells more jerseys than any Panther QB ahead of him, gets us national recognition, and actually wins games. A lot of people in this thread will be bitter while the rest of us will be entertained enjoying the fun.

That's fine. If he ends up being a Panther, I have already said I'll support him(just as I did Clausen when he was drafted, even though I didn't like the pick).

All I'm saying is historically rookie QB's who are thrown into the starting role their first season struggle. Matt Ryan/Flacco/Bradford doing so well raised everyone's expectations on rookie QB's to an unrealistic level. Chances are Newton will struggle at first, and everyone on this board will give him the Clausen treatment and will want a new QB next season.

Teams with established quarterbacks really don't know how lucky they are, lol.

No one said Newton is gonna win the Super Bowl his rookie season, just that he's an obvious upgrade at the QB position for our team. And that passing on a rare talent like him does a lot more harm than good at this point LONG TERM.
