McIlroy throws club after bogey-ridden round

VIRGINIA WATER, England – Leaders Peter Lawrie and David Drysdale each shot 6-under 66s Thursday at the BMW PGA Championship, leaving a frustrated top-ranked Rory McIlroy and his high-ranking rivals trailing after the first round.

McIlroy had five bogeys and a double bogey in his round of 74 to go with three birdies and an eagle. On the par-5, 12th he hurled his club after a poor provisional shot, which came after he sent his second shot out of bounds en route to a bogey 6.

''It's pretty disappointing,'' said McIlroy, whose No. 1 ranking is being threatened by Luke Donald this week. ''I feel like I'm playing well, I just need to go out there and shoot a score.''

Lawrie had four birdies and an eagle in an error-free round and the 291st-ranked Drysdale had seven birdies and a bogey in good weather at Wentworth.

Jamie Donaldson and Justin Rose had 67s, while second-ranked Donald joined a group two shots back after a 68.

McIlroy could be fined should his actions be deemed against the European Tour's guidelines on course etiquette.

''I have not yet had the chance to view the incident but I will be requesting a tape and if any breach ... is found, then appropriate action will be taken in due course,'' tournament director David Garland said.

I was wondering when Mr. KG was gonna mention this one...

The PGA had a post on this on Facebook the other day when it happened... I'll say the same thing here that I did there...

Rory was absolutely wrong to throw his club and the tour will probably fine him for it, and they should... but get back to me when he's been doing poo like this for literally YEARS and also yells expletives like "F*CK" and "Goddamn it" after every bad shot... :)

Rory is playing terribly right now... he's in a serious funk.

What news u reading KG? Rory missed the cut... again... Phil said he was exhausted and wanted to rest for the open, but I would have liked to have seen him play Friday even if he played poorly...

Well, technically a Rory is leading. It's just Rory Sabbatini.

Didn't he just win? You must mean majors.

Heres my take on it:

In my book, Tiger NEVER has to be 'back'. I don't care if he does or doesn't, I do want to see him in it though. When MJ joined the Wizards, I knew it wasn't the MJ that won 6 titles with the Bulls, but I was still going to watch, and I was still going to root for him. Tiger is 36 years old, will he catch Jack in majors? The odds say no, but I'm still rooting for him. I still have more fun watching when Tiger is in contention whether he wins or not.

Thats the only asterisk that i'd put next to these last two wins. The folks around him choked (not like its uncommon), its not his fault in any way, and it was still awesome to watch, but I want to see him win with the competition on his ass. Greater Drama. But it was exciting for me to watch today.
