Steve Reed's "State of the Panthers"

Part 3: http://carolinagrowl.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=872:state-of-the-panthers-part-3-smith-frustrated-but-will-the-team-consider-moving-him&catid=1:articlesRT

Smith, who’ll turn 32 this summer, discussed the possibility of being traded with team owner Jerry Richardson this past season, according to two league sources.

Whether or not the Panthers even consider that idea at the appropriate time remains to be seen.

At this point, they can’t think about moving him until a new collective bargaining agreement is in place and there’s no guarantee they will attempt to trade him even when the stalemate ends.

While general manager Marty Hurney wouldn’t discuss any private conversations the Panthers have had with Smith or his agent, he did acknowledge the team’s star receiver is extremely frustrated.

trade him for a 3rd or early 4th and then package that pick with another late round pick and get the best WR you can find. someone younger with more of a future and just as much of a skill set.

team won't want to keep someone around who is going to be a grumpy old man and who doesn't want to deal with such a young team. also, he can't seem to be able to stay in the game all year. how long has it been since he's played a full season?

I wouldn't shed a tear if we grab Green and trade Smith once the CBA is agreed upon (in whatever order). Don't need a b***h on the sidelines with a young team.

agreed. guy is getting old, gets hurt too often, and doesn't seem particularly interested in being around a bunch of kids, much less mentoring them.

I disagree he is getting old. He still has few years left. He may have lost some step, but he is still damn good. I think he should still stay, 'cause Gettis & LaFell are doing good from what we seen.

And I doubt Smitty isn't interested in being around a bunch of young players. I think it more about winning, not being around with kids & not mentoring them. Beside, didn't he work with Kenneth Moore when he was still here & Moore even said Smitty was mentoring him??

Wow talk about turning on a guy.

Yea seriously, why the hell turn on a guy that has worn his heart on his sleeve and given his all his entire time as a panther. You have to respect what smitty has done for this time. I can understand the let's trade him while he still has value, but to bitch about how he performed one season compared to what he accomplished his entire career is just immature. He might not be the best teammate or mentor, but he sure as hell has been the best panther receiver to ever set foot on the field for this franchise. I mean cmon people dnt ignore the good and just complain abt the bad that's a negative outlook on life. If Smith wants out of carolina then send him to New England, he is almost guaranteed a shot at the SB there and Belicheat and Brady can make him seem like a superstar again.
