Schefter: CBA Meeting for Today Canceled, JR Rubbing People Wrong Way

JR didn't fire his sons as part of some master scheme. mark and jon were fired because they couldn't get along or agree on anything. their disputes became distracting and JR let them go.

Well yeah...like I said

Well yeah...like I said:

This is actual audio footage I transcribed as I was hidden behind a couch in the JR offices.

Carolina Panthers team meeting Monday Morning:

Jerry Richardon: "Sons, the CBA is looming and all the owners have decided that we will opt out of our agreement. So what this means is no salary cap..we get and extra Franchise tag if we need it...

The Richardson sons: "Ok so then we will go ahead and offer the Peppers contract extend Deangelo, Kalil and Beason ..then and we will contact a few free agents that we have targeted..

Jerry inturrupts: "Wrong!" There is also no SALARY CAP MINIMUM! I expect not to sign anyone above the league min for a 1 yr contract. I expect us and the players to have a lockout in 2011 and we need to be financially viable for a few months in case the lockout extends into the seaon. The players union will cave in rapidly.

I will also keep Fox on one more season and not extend him.

sons-"but he would be a lame duck coach" " also the fans expect us to build on the playoff run we just had." we cant just tank a season...

JR-thats okay because i just fired you too..

According to NFLPA spokesman George Atallah, the players received 51.87 percent of all revenue in 2002. In 2003, it dropped to 50.23 percent. In 2004, it was 52.18 percent. In 2005, 50.52 percent. In 2006, it was 52.74 percent. In 2008, it was 50.96 percent. In 2007, it was 51.84 percent. In 2008, it was 50.96 percent. In 2009, it was 50.06 percent.

Thus, an offer to take 50 cents of every dollar represents no concession at all.

That said, we think it was unreasonable for the league stormed out. We assume the proposal reflected an opening offer from the union under an “all revenue” model, and opening offers implicitly contain room to move. With the league refusing to open the books to justify the desire to cut the players’ share, it’s not unreasonable for the players to say, “Look, let’s quit bickering about the league taking money off the top and let’s just work out a formula based on every dollar that comes in. Our first move is to ask for roughly what we currently get. Feel free to counter.”

If the NFL truly wanted to do a deal, the NFL would have countered.

to suggest that JR is trying to save face is kind of foolish. there's nothing to save face from. there is no master scheme. he's still very respected around the league by both the other owners and players. nothing in regards to this CBA (especially these rumors) is going to change that.

You clearly don't have your tinfoil hat on. Leave the common sense out of this thread please :sosp:

DP, sounds about right. Anyone trying to paint this anything other than a heated struggle with each and every proposal scrutinized to the degree that a single word can cause an impasse, is dead wrong... That's what's just happened here.

From what JR has said over the last few months, I don't see how people think he's doing anything but fueling that fire. Sure, he's not the only owner pissed off and wanting to keep their grubby hands all over the profits, but he's the face of the impasse, and that's why Schefter mentioned him.

The more and more I look back at the Luck situation and how Mort and Scheft repeatedly said JR wasn't gonna pay him and we got pissed... Mort told Kurb that JR was the biggest pusher of misinformation, which at the time I thought was BS... Looking back, I believe him. Still crazy that the owners won't open the books to prove their case.

I gotta believe at least some of this is posturing.

As to Richardson, we have no real idea what's going on there and Schefter isn't exactly the world's most reliable source. I'll say this though. It's not unusual for a group that's taking part in negotiations to have a "designated a--hole" who's willing to say the stuff that others might be thinking. Afterward of course, they can all go back and say "hey, it wasn't me that said that stuff; it was that guy" :sosp:

Given the kinds of things he's said before, I have a feeling Richardson has no problem playing that role.
