I just submitted my letter to the NBA

Allow me to give a different point of view. You all may disagree with me, but at least hear me out before bashing what I say.

I do think the NBA is one of the perceived worst officiated leagues, and I think it is due to the number of calls required to be made in a game. Think about it, in the NBA there is intense contact between players on every single play, players are running up and down the court at a fast pace, and you have players with different size and strengths matched up on each other all the time. So what this does is leads the NBA too a FAR greater amount of potential calls/missed calls than any other sport!!!

Baseball, only main calls to be made is foul/strike- which people often debate… and your occasional safe/not safe… and even with those few amount of potential call/miscalls in a game we have see baseball take a major hit for their officiating the past few years.

Football, Instant replay has help ease some of the huge blown calls and because of the nature of the game it’s easy to challenge/review 1 play. A lot of calls are straight forward, offsides, false start ect. And they officials in the perfect place to view that as it’s easy for them to always be in the perfect position for those calls. Now other calls that are at game speed and sometimes harder to call…. That’s why fans complain a lot about Pass interference, and holding, because those calls are sometimes harder to call from the prospective of an official on the field….. Same for basketball

In the new age of more and more cameras, plus HD, and super slow-mo, we now have to benefit of seeing every play for the best angles super clear!!!! So in a basketball game what is clear to us from home is not always as clear on the court! So that foul call that was super obvious on our 42”HDTV from the perfect angle, may not be so clear for the official running down the court to get in position, of from their view.

There can be 10 good calls in a row, and if the officials make 1 bad call (Maybe not from the officials point on the court, but from our perfect angle) that’s all we talk about. Now these officials are the worst. Think about it for one second, anybody who played Basketball growing up just for fun knows how hard it is to agree on foul calls… There’s always games stopped to argue over foul calls… It’s not the easiest call to consistently make and agree on. Just “Respect my call”. We didn’t have this issue playing basketball, football, or street hockey with calls during the game… Only basketball because it is the nature of the sport.

On top of that as fans we keep moving further and further to the side of having to put assign blame for a loss on someone and it is usually the officials. It’s always officiating. I have been to A LOT of AAU, High School, College, and Pro basketball games… I swear after games especially highly contested ones 2 people almost always gets blame after game 1st the officials, and then the coach. I PROMISE you on my life this is not a Bobcat thing!!!! Almost every losing team fans spews these exact same words after a loss!!!! I’m a very very observant person. I like to watch and observe people, and this is something I see across the board with all basketball games.

We as people just need to be more realistic and objective in my opinion. Basektball is the hardest game to officiate for all those reasons I mentioned earlier, have been, and will continue to be. We as fans need to accept calls will not always be perfect, it’s the nature of the game. Also for the 48 minutes running up and down the court, and consistent contact almost every second of that 48 minutes there will be missed calls. There will be calls that look like they are easy to make for awesome, comfortable, relaxed vantage point…. But maybe not so easy for the vantage point on the court where they have multiple actions they have to keep their eyes on, fast paced action contact, while running up and down the court.

Of course if there are 8 bad not great calls in 1 game… If your team had 4 or 5 of them go against them then that’s all fans remember…. Not the other 4 or 3 that went against the other team. To me that’s not being objective. Fans are only looking for bad calls against their team so it gives them a bias opinion that is not there if they were looking for bad calls for both team because they we see it goes both ways.

At the end of the day I think fans need to be more objective, less emotional, and stop settling for the same complaints every fan makes at every level when they lose. I’m sure all these basketball fans at love could be an official and never have missed/bad calls in a game as they will always be in the perfect position, always know where they play is going, and exactly where contact will happen.

I received a reply:

Dear Corey:

Thank you for contacting the National Basketball Association with your concerns regarding the officiating in last night's Pacers vs. Bobcats game. The NBA’s highest priority is to ensure that every game is determined on its merits.

We take seriously the performance of our officials. They are subjected to incredible scrutiny by the league, including tracking every call they make and holding them to the most rigorous standard in all of sports. Not only is their past performance measured, charted, and evaluated, but we employ a system of stringent metrics designed to continually hone their skills and improve their overall ability. We strive to ensure that NBA games are officiated at the highest possible level with the understanding that perfection is an unattainable goal.

Thank you again for your concern. We appreciate your feedback regarding this issue.

Sincerely,

NBA Fan Relations

Guess that will have to suffice. Need a win Vs New Jersey coming up.

theyhateme...you make a great point....but you missed out on hockey....faster, the blast a puck at each other at 100mph and they all carry a stick!

calls get missed, but I will easily say that reffing is way better in hockey than in the NBA

Pacers are a much improved team though and the Bobcats are looking good with Wallace playing the type of basketball we're used to seeing him play. I still think we should move Diaw, he doesn't show up to play enough nights.

Bobcats may not have any tiebreakers but that doesn't mean they can't win more games than the pacers, 76ers and bucks

I left out Hockey becasue I did not know enough information, or watch it often enough to speak on it. I would have assumed penalities like high sticking and slashing would be easier to see/call.... But like I said I don't know enough penalities in the game to comment on hockey. Can't post strong statments/assumptions on what I don't know. :D

I got the same response what a joke.

Theyhateme, I agree to an extent with what you said, But if you watched the game and pretty much the past 5 Bobcats games it does not really apply. Missed calls here and there will happen but these are blatant missed calls that in any other sport, the league and media would come down on the refs like a ton of bricks. It ruins the integrity of the game.

Yeah where they show Bobcats games is very weird. I live in Charleston Sc and get every game on sportssouth yet people actually in NC cannot get the games. Anyways if you watch the game highlights from last night you will see the final play and how it was pretty much a big F you from the refs to the Bobcats. It really sucks the refs can do that.

    • The reality though is that there just isn't a traditional #1 pick type of player in this draft to begin with. He might have been below Marvin last year, but I don't think he'd have been below Nabers. And if you think he disappears in some college games, then you're only looking at the box scores, I guarantee you not a single NFL GM will say he disappears in games when watching the tape. Arizona's offense is a MESS this year, the new coaching staff is beyond bad and the fanbase is screaming for them all to be fired, our OL is awful, our QB is playing like utter garbage, and we don't have another weapon to attract any defensive attention.  Teams are double and triple teaming him on almost every snap, and when combined with the OL and QB issues, it's just impossible to get him the ball sometimes.  And even when our QB forces the pass to him, half the time it's not even catchable given how poor he's been playing. And even despite all that, he's still 3rd in the nation in yards. I've also seen more WR rankings having Burden over Hunter than I have seen Hunter over T-Mac.  If we had a true outside #1 WR, then taking someone like Hunter (or Burden) instead of T-Mac would make more sense as if Hunter were to play WR in the NFL, he'd more likely be used a slot guy like Godwin or Kupp.   There's a reason most mocks/analysts who don't list Hunter as a CB/WR (or just Athlete) list him as a CB.  Because it's his better position and the side of the ball he's more likely to play in the NFL, partially due to his wire thin frame, I don't see him holding up long term as a WR.
    • This was a good breakdown from Daniels.  Last year has had a lasting impact on Young. He still isn't getting the time needed from the OL - the OL we have is made to establish the run and for the run to be in play.  We get behind and have to throw all game we are doomed with this O-line. His receivers have to catch the ball when he makes a good throw to them, he can't have them dropping his good passes. Why are we running 4 slants all toward the same direction?  Why a triple option on 4th and 1? That's on the coaches. Bryce gets hurried and starts slinging the ball where it shouldn't be thrown, more study and recognition from him are needed.  Bryce doesn't step up in the pocket and throws too soon and unbalanced.  He over and under throws the ball because of it.  That's on him.  If the pocket isn't there and he can't get his base set he needs to check down or "live to fight another day." He has been thrown to the wolves and has lost his confidence.  This team doesn't have much, if any, talent and it's a cluster.  I think he can still be an NFL QB.  Maybe not a QB1 in the short term, but if he has a chance with better coaching and personnel he may be better than we are giving him credit for. I think we ruined him last year and have not fixed anything to help him this year.  If we can't run or get way behind all NFL defenses are coming after him.  Dalton has more respect and defenses didn't always sell out to get to him because he'd hit a quick slant, screen, or check down because he has the experience to know what's coming and what to do. Just my 2 cents.
    • All depends on who the backup is. Josh Allen probably would have been benched too if there were better backups than Matt Barkley and Nate peterman.
