I'm starting 2 hope Jimmy can prove people wrong.

Before I start let me say I was a big Luck person and had lost all hope in Clausen.

Since Luck is staying in school and Jimmy is taking so much crap for being horrible his 1st year. I'm starting 2 be a Jimmy fan.

I hope this kid can get everything that Rip taught him washed from his head and get better from better coaching and a better system.

As I look back at all the scouting reports he didn't get bad grades from any service. Most if not all had him pegged as a Franchise QB.

Maybe we should try 2 build around him he did have a bad freshman year at ND then got better every year afterthat.

Maybe it's wishful thinking but do any of you think Jimmy can be a franchise QB with better coaching fixing the oline and maybe a elite TE added 2 the weapons we have at RB and WR?

I really wish he could be a great QB, I just haven't seen any evidence of it yet really.

He'll get his chance this year, and he'll have plenty of people still rooting for him. I just don't know he has the ability to actually succeed in the offense was are supposedly implementing.

I don't think it would be fair to give up on him after his rookie season. I definitely think he should sit a season though behind a veteran and with a better coaching staff. He showed some ability to extend plays and make some nice throws, he just needs confidence, maturity, and a better supporting cast. I think he can be the guy personally if we can develop him properly.

I don't really get this "he has to sit this season" stuff.

If he doesn't win his starting job in camp, so be it, but don't go into it thinking he has to sit. Why? He's not going to suddenly turn into Aaron Rodgers if we pretend he didn't start his rookie year and bench him for 4 years while we hope he develops. This isn't Green Bay, this isn't that situation. We need to know what we have out of him, and that involves him actually trying to win his job.

That's what's killing me where did all his ability go???

It's not like Kiper was the only one high on Clausen alot of scout's we like and respect were.

His size shouldn't be a probelm because A rodgers is the same size.

I don't think his ability went anywhere. It could be argued that he had better receivers at ND than he had here. I think that he wasn't confident in his ability to fit the ball in the much tinier windows in the pro game and was more worried about not making a mistake than attacking down the field. The difference between him and Rodgers is that Clausen doesn't have the same arm strength or accuracy at this point. Plus short dumpoff passes are easier to knock down than longer throws downs the field based on the trajectory of the ball. If Clausen is going to get better he is going to have to let the ball fly and throw it into coverage. The dink and dunk approach won't work in our new offense unless he has set it up by going down the field and backed off the safeties.

I'm not trying 2 defend Jimmy's play because it was baaaaaaaaaaaaddddddd!!!!!

But it everything that can hurt a rookie QB seem 2 happen for Jimmy this year.

Oline starting slow with injuries. Only one WR option (which he didn't get 2 work with in the preseason) for most of the year. Injuries at the Rb spot plus some of the RB having cases of the fumbles. Bad OC and QB coach no vet leadership at the QB position. Thrown in the line of fire way 2 early.

Jimmy was bad but how good was his situation?

That's what so crazy alot of scout's say he had a stronger arm then Rodgers and he got high marks in accuracy as well. Mayock said his arm isn't Cutler or Russel level but a notch or 2 below. Could Rip have F'ed up his throwing motion that much? He wasn't getting that many balls knocked down in ND. What happen 2 the quick release as well?

He was actually "favorably compared" to Rodgers by a couple sites I read.

His throwing motion in college was a bit strange but I swear it wasn't as bad as we saw this year. He also had batted balls in college because of his height etc, but he can learn to avoid that. His draft profile on ESPN specifically mentions he had batted balls in college and likely would in the pros, but that is something that can be coached around.

At ND, he did seem to have a very quick release. I wonder if Rip tried to correct his throwing motion and in doing so f'd up the speed of his release.

Could have been the toe injury, could have been a desire to get the ball too quickly. It is hard to say. From everything I have seen, Rip likely didn't do him many favors either. I don't remember his release in college being as sidearm and low as it was this year but I didn't see that many ND games so maybe it was me. But I was pretty excited when we got him until I actually saw him play. I think for most of us it was a huge disappointment.

The comparisons must have been Rodgers coming out of college not the guy we saw on Sunday. I agree that the Clausen we saw this year was a huge disappointment after all the hype. Seemed like the guy we saw was nothing like the guy in college. I don't know if it was all Rip but he didn't do the kid any favors it would seem.

    • Defense was not that good last night. However, if they can clean up some terrible offensive zone clears and bad defense(from offensive players too) they will be unbeatable.    I said this last night to my wife at the game, the only team that can beat the canes this year is the canes.  Stay out of box, know when to pinch, don’t get caught flat footed, and clear the damn puck.
