Then you raise an even better question: why have property taxes in the first place?

and that's a valid point as well...I can see when the first person buys the property from the city/state/feds etc...but after that, it really makes no sense...you own the property and are responsible for it, but they still take the cash

the tax is every year and the equity could go up or down, but the tax rev for the county ALWAYS goes on.

they need to bring it into the 21st century. stagger it.

house is valued between 0-30k its at one rate and so on. those that can afford more expensive homes, see in advance the tax implications and make their move.

the poor or working poor keep getting hammered. food tax? same for the poor guy and the rich guy.

property tax? % is the same. an amount might be more due to price but come on.

Pretty sure my house tax value went up since the last tax assessment. Still it came in slightly less than what I paid for it a year ago. Having them adjust for upgrades would just raise my taxes right? The only thing that matters for selling is the bank appraisal and competitive market value amIright?

Appraisal & competitive market value are a good guesstimate. But when it comes down to actually selling your house, the market will set the rate. In this market, if your house won't sell at your asking price after 2 years, your asking too much. If it sells in a month in this market, you were asking too little.

That's what I figured. So the government tax value is just bullshit. I definitely will not inform them of upgrades to the property then.
