I know it seems a touch extreme to just blame everything on someone else whilst ignore what is staring you in the face, but Clausen played almost like a polar opposite to what he did at college.

I don't know what it is about Clausen, it's irrational, but I feel like we really didn't see the real him.

Yup, I think what changed is that Clausen is a slow starter... same pattern at ND. He came out of high school as the LeBron James of football and stunk it up his first season at ND, but gradually he adjusted and played pretty well towards the end.

The learning curve from college to the pros is much steeper than it is from HS to college, so it stands to reason that it will take him more time to adjust (assuming he can make the adjustment).

Possibly, but what about the disappearance of his best trait? His quick release?

After doing all their own evaluation, due dilegence etc - If the coaching staff, Hurney, etc think Newton can be a franchise guy then you pick him, even at #1. If you are willing to trade down to #5 or something with the plans on picking Newton then but cant find a trade partner then so what, you pick him #1. If he is your guy, then he is your guy.

Like I've said all along, just because the guy wasn't asked to do something at Auburn doesn't mean he can't and the ceiling on a guy with his size, arm and athleticism is very, very high.

If Clausen were the only one who regressed, I'd be more likely to blame him. But Scherer's pattern both in Cleveland and Charlotte was that when guys were moving from backups to starters, he could coach them up to be good. Once they were established starters, they suddenly tanked (Quinn, Anderson, and Moore all fit that pattern, and you could argue for Clausen in that pool too).

Now why does something like that happen?

Only thing I can figure, backups get less direct coaching than starters.

In college, one of Clausen's criticisms was that he took too many chances down field, relying on his receiver to make a play...

Add in that one of his strengths was his quick release, and clearly something significant changed between college and the pros

Clausen will get a chance to redeem himself. I suspect that because the windows are smaller in the pros he doesn't either trust his receivers or his accuracy at this point. When you look at Rodgers last night he was throwing the ball into tight windows on most of his deep throws but trusts himself to make the throws. Some of that comes with experience and some of that is knowing what you can do. You can't really compare what Clausen did or didn't do in college at this point, that was ancient history. With 10 starts under his belt he isn't a rookie either. We will all have to see what he can do in the pro game after working with Shula. If he can't do it then, well......... then he isn't the one.

Yup and Jake basically said after he left that he let Scherer get into his head a little too much.

Could also explain the total brain cramp Moore experienced this past season?

I can tell you from hanging out at practice that as the starting QB was walking out Scherer was almost always in his ear talking about something as they walked.
