Matt Maiocco has us taking Newton # 1 overall

Did you just say Gabbert ran the same offense as Newton? What? Not all spread offenses are the same, ffs. Not saying he's going to go number one, because he won't, but they were in very different offenses.

Kaepernick's may have been a 1 read and run offense (only saw one game of Nevada where it did kinda look like that), but I sure as hell don't want him at #1 either.

As to being coached to make multiple reads, it looked more like he was being coached to lean on his incredible physical abilities. In the college game, that is much easier on the coach and honestly it's more effective than teaching them to play a game more similar to the NFL style.

no i didnt say that.i was talking about ck when i stated they ran the same offense.i do know there are different forms of a spread chief.

but teams did that to clausen/ moore because they were worried about double trouble and they still could not take advantage of the single match up.just give his carries to that BEAST back field we have.

There is a huge difference between college and NFL one on ones. You saw in the national championship game that his two TD passes were to wide open guys. Guys without anyone within 7 yards of them. There is more speed all over the NFL field and those swing passes don't work in the NFL. I wouldn't say we faced too many 8 man boxes this year.

no, i can careless what anybody else like. my problem is people bash this guy for the dumbest reason. he played in a 1 read offense but than you say he cant read defense. or he has questions about work ethic etc..... that is all bs.

Like Mav says below, it's not that we said he can't, just that he hasn't shown he can. Reading defenses is the hardest thing to do in the NFL and you are automatically assuming he can when he's shown no evidence of this. All we're saying is he needs to show it and it's difficult. You're assuming he can, which is just dumb.

First, not many of us think he can't read defenses, we just havent' seen evidence of him making multiple reads. That doesn't mean he is incapable of it, just that it is a learning curve, i.e., he is a project.

Mizzou did NOT run an option offense. The type of spread that Missouri runs relies on totally different plays and play styles from it's quarterback compared to the offense Malzahn runs.

Edit: Honestly we'll need to develop any #1 we take. I think many people just feel that Fairley, Green, etc's impact will be greater sooner than Newton's would be.

Really trying to argue one system make a QB more prepared then another is not a good argument at all. Clausen came from a pro system and failed badly and Bradford and The Golden Calf of Bristol both came from gimmic systems and both did better. IMO if anything a pro offense hides flaws because IMO you would not get much better QB coach then charlie weis. Same goes for Carol at USC and we will see how much of an impact jim haughbaugh had on Luck next year.

The will to win is what determines success. That is the "it" that some of you are trying to analyze.

QB trumps all positions on the field. If you don't have one you ain't got nothing. They should go after the guy they think is the best QB and if we have a stable of QBs like we do running backs so be it, it's a good thing.

Don't be scared Panthers, pull the trigger!

So The Golden Calf of Bristol sitting all year didn't help at all right?

that was two passes. once again that same game he got a defender off of him stepped up in the pocket and hit a wr down field. the level is different but on any level you throw at the one vs one.we did face a lot of teams bringing extra guys in the box because they knew what our BnB was.

but to write him off makes no sense. you have to be coached up and the tape dont lie.our division is stacked with stud qbs.

Gruden tried that.

It didn't go so well.

It wouldn't have mattered how many quarterbacks Gruden picked or didn't pick. His issue was that he was a jerk to them, was constantly critical and never inspired confidence. Seemed all of them disliked him. He changed quarterbacks like he did his socks. In fact, Jake Plummer chose to retire instead of play for him.

It isn't how many QBs you have but what you do with the ones you have.

Cam Newton gaining steam as draft's top QB

According to SI's Tony Pauline, at least six NFL teams are ranking Auburn's Cam Newton as the top quarterback prospect in the 2011 draft.

According to Pauline, those same teams (one identified as the Dolphins) have Newton "clearly higher" on their draft boards than Da'Quan Bowers, Nick Fairley, Marcell Dareus, and Blaine Gabbert. Newton obviously isn't a finished product, but there's no doubting his arm strength, accuracy, and athleticism. He'll work out in front of media in San Diego on Thursday.

I'm curious to see what happens on Thursday. He's obviously got a lot of the physical talents that are very impressive, so I'm not surprised there are teams that are after him... but not sure the Panthers will go after a qb #1.

wonder if we could entice the dolphins into moving up to #1 for some of their goodies, er, draft picks.
