Matt Maiocco has us taking Newton # 1 overall

If Vick had started 16 games, he probably would have thrown for 4000 yards and 28 TDs. He would have rushed for 900 yards and 12 TDs.

If you don't think a QB who accounts for 5000 yards of offense and 40 TDs is in the top 3 QBs in the league, despite being a "running QB" then I'll let KT say the rest for me.

Vick isn't a running QB. He WAS a running QB that turned into a pocket passer who has the option to run when he feels it's necessary. Vick now and Vick of the past are like night and day. Now it seems the only time he runs is when everyone is covered and the pocket starts breaking down forcing him to scramble.

also, with that logic Matt Moore would have had a pro bowl season if you projected his 2009 numbers over the course of a full season. I don't know if you noticed, but defenses started figuring Vick out towards the end of the season and he wasn't NEAR as successful and those numbers would have fell off significantly.

don't want newton at all.

don't mind fairley.

don't want green.

peterson would be my first choice.

we had by far the WORST offense in the league, while our defense was pretty respectable overall. so what do we do with the first pick overall that we got because our offense was so bad? ignore it? LOL fail

Ugh. One more season wasted.

Is Luck a Junior or Senior next year? Could he dodge us again?

he's going into his senior year, but he'll have 2 years of eligibility. he won't use that last one, though. he just wanted to graduate, which he'll easily do after the 2011-2012 year

one thing that is funny to me after reading all of this thread and other ones is that if you look just at his passing stats and compared them with others, you might think they are pretty impressive.

i mean look at these QBs college stats:

comp:263 att:372 yards:3338 comp%:70.7 ypa:8.97 TDs:32 INTs:8 rating:170.16 (luck 2010)

comp:301 att:475 yards:3186 comp%:63.4 ypa:6.71 TDs:16 INTs:9 rating:127.03 (gabbert 2010)

comp:289 att:425 yards:3722 comp%:68.0 ypa:8.76 TDs:28 INTs:4 rating:161.43 (clausen 2009)

comp:185 att:280 yards:2854 comp%:66.1 ypa:10.19 TDs:30 INTs:7 rating:182.05 (newton 2010)

comp:328 att:483 yards:4720 comp%:67.9 ypa:9.77 TDs:50 INTs:8 rating:180.84 (bradford 2008)

comp:235 att:383 yards:3459 comp%:61.4 ypa:9.03 TDs:25 INTs:10 rating:153.54 (stafford 2008)

comp:495 att:342 yards:4486 comp%:69.1 ypa:9.1 TDs:37 INTs:10 rating:165.8 (big ben 2003)

comp:209 att:316 yards:2566 comp%:66.1 ypa:8.2 TDs:24 INTs:8 rating:154.3 (aaron rodgers 2004)

you take any of those guys on passing numbers alone and newton is hard to pick out, but then you add in that he ran 264 times for 1473 yards and 20 TDs and he's all of a sudden someone that you have to tap the brakes on? he gets the job done.

also consider that this was his first year in that offense. what could he have done with more years? questions on his work ethic and dedication are flat out silly. how in the world do you put someone in two brand new offenses and each time take your team to the #1 spot in their respective classes and question his work ethic and dedication?

he'd have a lot to learn, but so would/does every QB coming out of college. people look at his rushing numbers and all of the sudden every other thing he does gets thrown out the window because we can't have a "rushing QB". it's ok to have a pure pocket guy and a mobile guy, but we have to stay away from this made up category of "rushing QB".

mike vick would have been a much bigger headache for a lot longer if he had half of newton's work ethic. newton has stayed well clear of any trouble since he left florida (and just in case you're wondering, his name is cameron, not cecil and we wouldn't be drafting his dad or his whole family, just cameron...notion that we'd be drafting his whole family or his dad as well is just flat out stupid). there is no reason to believe that he would get into trouble as a pro. he doens't have the mental instability of the VY who was never tested, criticized, or scrutinized until he got into the pros and that is when he folded. cam was put into much more pressure than VY ever did this past year and there is no way VY would have made it as far as he did if he were put under that same pressure. newton stood head tall and focused in spite of all that garbage that got thrown at him.

someone is going to draft this kid and most of the teams that needed a QB and didn't take a shot on him will be either kicking themselves or still lying to themselves saying that a QB like him can't succeed at the pro level while he succeeds with them just like he succeeded in the other two programs he started in.

it might take him a year or two to get up to speed with the league, but once he does, watch out.

wow what are stats? I hardly see them on this board.

Tangible facts that can shut down weak arguments.

but that's not how we roll here.

ever notice that the threads with real news (coach signings, player news) maybe get 10 posts but threads about another jagoff's opinions are the hot topics?

What bothers me, is that so many fans have already made up their minds that Cam Newton is pure garbage and will be a team cancer because of his daddy.

I wish people would at least keep an open mind and see how he does in the interviews and how much he has learned with his QB coach, before they dismiss him altogether. I think we all know that the Panthers probably won't take him, but you should never say never with any of these prospects.

Sometimes. You have to understand a little beyond the stats though.

If you went purely by stats, you'd have thought Colt Brennan and Timmy Chang were among the best QBs in the country.

Us drafting someone doesn't mean Clausen won't have a chance to beat him out.

You really want to ask our quarterback coach to try to train up three young prospects in a few weeks worth of camp? Two is hard enough.

We've got new coaches and a new system. Even with similarities to the old one, there'll be a lot to learn, and you simply can't give equal reps to four guys in camp and expect much of a result.

The best thing they can do is to sign a couple vets that have familiarity. That decreases the amount of teaching time necessary and gives you a couple of "teaching assistants" for the young guys we have.
