Matt Maiocco has us taking Newton # 1 overall

We have so many need's, it's gonna take more than one draft and dip in the FA market to get thing's going in the right direction. When you need QB, DT, oline, and secondary if we loose Marshall. But QB must be at the top of the list no matter how you find one, we need a playmaker at that position. After that we need a hoss DT badly.

We DO NOT need OLine....we just need depth on OLine.

QB will be the ONLY issue that cannot be easily fixed this offseason.

Agree that the project argument is pretty lame. Especially those that want to pass this year and take a shot next year if Clausen struggles. That just makes things take a year or two longer to develop. Why would you not want two guys who could start at quarterback? When was the last time we made it through a season without our starter going down? Yeah that would 2008. Before that 2005.

Clausen will be here but honestly unless he hits the weight room he doesn't have the arm strength for this offense and his constant low ball throws are too easy to bat down. We need a QB with the physical talent to play this game who can then be developed into a top notch guy instead of trying to salvage a guy with limitations.

But, Newton also has major limitations that he MIGHT be able to correct....jsut like Clausen.

Has never been required to read defenses....did not take snaps from under center....did not have to make read progressions....has questionable footwork.

Clausen was supposed to have an elite football IQ and was already skilled at reading defenses and making good decisions. And he is just one in a long list of QB's who were thought to be NFL ready by scouts, and who could do all the things that Cam supposedly can't do, but it turned out to be fools gold, at least early on. Maybe some of this stuff is not quite as important as people think it is. Maybe it's better to find somebody with elite physical ability and and a winning attitude, and let him learn at his own pace.

The thing is, if we don't get a QB at #1, then there won't be another chance until the 3rd, and we can't count on being able to trade down. None of these veterans people keep mentioning are going to help us much either...especially in the long run. It's a tough decision for sure and there probably won't be a quick fix, regardless of what direction they go in.

To me the "we don't need oline" statement is very dangerous. We have no long term replacements for 3 of the 5 positions. Gross is old and will need a replacement in a couple years. Wharton is getting up there and has been somewhat injury prone his whole career, and we still don't have a true RG.

All of our backups are serviceable but I don't see any as starting material. If you stockpile talent now it will be ready and available when needed. We don't need a situation like we have at QB on the oline.

Maybe the reason in your scouting report Cam Newton hits every single receiver "in stride" with good "velocity" is because you were watching his youtube highlights. Kiper and McShay better watch their back...

You're right. As I pointed out, you can't use youtube videos to properly evaluate a QB.

If he really raises his stock and dominates the combine I could see that, I'd feel better with Newton than any of these other joker qb's

This....

Wanting to pick up lifetime backups like Volek and make them the starter for a year is crazy. I'm ready to guarantee with the defense the Panthers had last year Cam could have won more then two games. Brian St Pierre even moved the ball better then Clausen.

If Vick had started 16 games, he probably would have thrown for 4000 yards and 28 TDs. He would have rushed for 900 yards and 12 TDs.

How's the last quarterback that put up big stats in Andy Reid's system doing now that he's playing in a conventional offense?

Sense or not the ownership and GM have said in so many words that clausen is not a starter. First by outwardly saying we would draft luck and secondly by hurney saying that QB is top priority. Like it or not we will focus on a QB in the draft or FA and pickles want start this year or ever depending on what happens.

They haven't said he's not a starter. They've said he's a question mark. They've also gone out of their way to say that they don't feel last season was a fair measuring stick.

Whether any of us like it or not, Clausen will get his chance to prove he can be the starter.

The panther fans might be the most ignorant bunch i have ever seen. Wine, cheese and ingnorance dont mix.

Why? Because they don't like the same quarterback you do?

There are legitimate concerns about Newton. heck, there are legitimate concerns about every first round QB prospect in this draft. I've said repeatedly I don't want any of them.

If you want to argue about it, how about actually sticking to the facts and/or accepting that intelligent people can legitimately disagree rather than playing the "everyone who doesn't think like me is ignorant" card?

Here's how it breaks down:

If you don't like Clausen, you're jealous.

If you don't like Cam, you're racist

If you don't like the other QBs, that's fine, no one does.

I don't like anybody. Wonder what that makes me.

Dude is a beat writer for the 49ers and the fanboys act like his word is the gospel on the NFL draft.

I'll take a beat writer's word as gospel...when he's talking about the team he actually covers.

I'm not gonna go to Darin Gantt or Steve Reed to ask who they think the Kansas City Chiefs will draft this year.
