Here is an interesting proposal:

Trade with Buffalo or Cincinnati for a fourth rounder and agree to swap #1 picks in 2012. You would have to bank on the fact that we will be better than they will be in 2012--Considering that I think we will have a fast turnaround and our youth will step up a notch, I would do it.

Hurney would not, but I would.

seriously! this is my exact sentiments as well. it would be different if the #1 pick was a linebacker or a running back, but a serious need position is in the #1 slot. slam and dunk as far as i'm concerned. it's a weak draft class anyway, so even if he isn't everything we hoped for, it's not like you could complain considering the strength of the draft class.

What makes this a weak draft class?

If Hurney manages to trade out of the #1 overall with any close to reasonable compensation (I'm talking like a 3rd only) he should be knighted by the Queen of England.

That's the real crux of the thing, isn't it?

If you want to trade down just to trade down, you can certainly do it. Heck, it'd be easy.

If you actually insist on getting something worthwhile in return though? Not so easy anymore.

Me? I'm always selfish when it comes to trades.

People mean that this draft is weak at the top. There isn't a clear franchising type player at the top. The top 4 guys could be great or they could wash out of the league but nobody really thinks they are number one pick worthy and in many drafts none of them would be considered. That's why we will have to take it in the ass to trade down.

I know a lot of folks are talking about just swapping picks with one of the other teams in the top five, but keep in mind for that to happen there has to be some benefit in it for the other team too.

Right now, there doesn't really seem to be any certain player that any team wants so desperately they're willing to trade up. Most of them are fine with just sitting back and getting what falls to them.

Yeah, that could change between now and April, but is there any actual indication that it will? At this point, I'd have to say not really.

Technically, you don't have to trade down - you could just let the time expire and the way the rules work the next team in line would be on the clock and you would fall in behind them... I'm sure the Panthers would take allot of heat for doing this, but it is a way to get out of having to choose # 1 overall. I remember analysts discussing the possibility of this a few years back and there was no clear # 1 talent in the draft class.
