For the elite defense folks, something to ponder

Yep so its not the end all either. But I have seen a superbowl won by a great defense and a pure pooty QB. Don't remember it the other way around.

Check and mate

well then i guess this means we shouldn't improve our 32nd ranked offense guys because some teams did it with average QB play in a league much different from today's

btw 2006 Colts

whatever the case you're making an argument for a defense whose entire performance hinges on the presence of one guy

that's not great defense

I think a lot of defenses can hinge on one guy. Steelers with Troy, Colts with Sanders, Ravens with Reed, hell even the Pack looked pretty bad in the second half without Woodson.

Those guys allow the other 10 to do things they are better at and as a whole the defense is better. They also cover up for a lot of people's short comings, take that away and they get exposed (Ravens and Steelers secondaries without Reed and Troy being able to roam).

Sanders is a beast and you can't deny his presence.

The Steelers have been able to overcome Troy's absence in games, he's missed 13 of them (regular season) the last 2 years

Reed's missed like 10 regular season games in the last 2 years, they're defense hasn't fallen apart, as a matter of fact, they've maintained top 10 standing, the steelers have too

the Packers have endured countless injuries on the defensive side of the ball and kept it together this year because of depth

so no, great defenses don't characteristically hinge on one player

Steelers have a losing record without Troy in the lineup so I wouldn't call that "overcoming" his absence.

They barely overcame the injury to Woodson and it was due to Matthews. If Rashard doesn't fumble, the Packers probably lose. Their defense struggles without Woodson and I'd imagine it would struggle just as much without Matthews. Those two guys make the biggest impact week in and week out. Other injuries don't matter as much and you know it.

.

this is solely because Polamalu was out those games

you're using this to justify the fact that the colts go from like a top 5 defense with sanders to bottom of the barrel. anyway you're bringing up 2 guys and forgetting that both BJ Raji and AJ Hawk bring a lot to the table as both the nose tackle (which is one of the biggest key pieces of a 3-4) and defensive captain, tackling leader. Also pressure from Howard Green was the reason Ben throws that first pick last night.

they've got contributions from a lot of other guys and it's not just a two man show on that defense
