Williams, Johnson or someone else?

You guys need to understand something regarding the tag, we will NOT stay with that one year salary. This isn't a peppers situation. It will be there just a few weeks till we hammer out a long term deal more cap friendly.

As for as franchise tag numbers you can throw them out. If a new CBA is in place then that is all going to change. If no CBA then no one moves period.

As for as who gets it and who isn't worth it, you guys need to wake the fugg up outta madden mode already. CJ had 11.5 sacks and has improved each season. the kid is 24 friggin years old with 27 sacks in 4 years (didn't see the field hardly at all his first year). I gurandamtee someone WILL pay big money for this kid and he will perform for them.

Ryan K is a pro bowl friggin center and will be for some time. 'but he isn't worth LT money'. Really? Ask Manning, Rothlesberger, Rogers, Brady, Rivers etal how much money their centers are worth? Jim Kelly will tell you Kent Hull was worth his weight in gold. No one touches the ball as much as CENTER and QB. Center makes the line calls and adjustments. In many people opinion CENTER is more important than LT in several ways. So get it through your heads YES a pro bowl calibre center is MORE than worth the money. but again, he wouldn't make LT money even one year, it would change once the long term deal is done.

Who gets it? I am torn. I say Ryan K first because Center is so important but so is CJ with his youth and getting better each year. I think JR needs to re consider his stance on no extensions before a CBA is in place or we lose a stud player or two.

I doubt we tag anyone. No one is worth that money on a one year deal and of the guys eligible to tag, only Kalil is a perennial probowler. Williams won't be in that high demand and Johnson is still a restricted free agent unless the CBA changes the restriction for unrestricted free agency back to 4 years. Right now it is 6 years and this is his fifth year.

At this point I think the defensive players wants to play in the new defense and likely want to stay. Again Williams has only played 19 games out of a possible 32 in the past 2 years and has injury issues. He won't be in high demand.

Johnson is a contract year performer and may be great for a number of years but so far is largely unproven.

One wild card in all this is that Denver will be looking for a DE for their 4-3 and Johnson would be a great fit. Wouldn't be surprised if Fox tries to poach our players if Richardson isn't aggressive signing our guys.

You are right that if a long term deal is signed the tag doesn't have to apply but the player does have the choice to play under the tag and collect the 1 year deal. Just most guys would prefer a long term deal and the certainty of locking things up. The signing bonus and 1st year salary is usually more than the tag so they get more upfront as well.

Of the guys I would agree that Johnson and Kalil are the 2 that are most risk to be gone. I would think Fox would make a big push for Johnson if we don't. And we have no backup for Kalil at all.

I think like you that if we really want those 2 guys, we should sign them before March 4th and be done with it. The new CBA won't change their salaries or worth and we need to sign the guys we have few replacements for. Nothing after March 4th is going to make that much of a difference really. As far below the cap we are, we can easily sign a few guys now with no consequence.

I just don't know we have used the tag that much or will this year.

Ryan Kalil and CJ need to be locked up. Johnson is finally hitting stride and he's only 24. He can be very good for a long time. We can't let go of a good thing. If come down to Ryan, CJ, and DWill, I think you sign Ryan and CJ, then see if you can pull off a tag and listen to offers for DWill. I know how special Deangelo is but so is Stewart and I have a good feeling about Goodson. Our defensive line would be nothing with out CJ and Kalil is a top 5 center.

contrary to what a lot of people are calling for at QB, we will probably not be going with a an old QB as a starter this year. if the team takes the long view and decides to start someone who has a future and the season is extended to 18 games, they will need all the help they can get from their run game and will need to be as deep as possible. they'll be keeping williams around. i don't think they'll have to resort to tagging him unless it's just to buy a little time.

i really can't see them using the tag on anyone, really. most of the guys will get signed quickly after the CBA is signed. kalil, williams, and johnson will probably be the first ones they work with.

we half enough money to pay all three of these guys money enough to stay for the next 5-6 years each especially if we front load their contracts with signing bonuses and money on the backend. All three deserve it, and all 3 are a big part of what we do here. I promise that all of them want to stay too. I know D will and Kalil do. We know what they are worth, and I promise they want to keep them.

Tag Johnson. If he was on any team except for the worst team in the NFL last year, he would have been one of the more talked about players. You don't let a 24 y/o DE that just came off a double digit sack season walk.

However, if what I am thinking is correct then we will tag D-will. Not because he is worth it but because Johnson and Kalil are going to be RFA until the CBA is done. Most likely the owners are going to give some kind of grace period to get your own guys signed before FA begins. There are so many guys eligible for FA on EVERY team I really don't see the owners just allowing FA to begin as soon as the CBA is signed.

With the amount of cap space the Panthers have and the value of CJ and Kalil they can pretty much just throw out a "you can't say no to this" deal and wrap them up quickly and still not overpay.

Williams could be a tricky contract. Is he good? Yes. Do they HAVE to have him? No. Do they want him on the team? Yes. At his age and with his concerns is he worth a long term top tier contract? No. Does he want that big contract? Most likely, yes.

So they will probably tag Williams if they feel that it is really important to get him back next year. Otherwise, they may just sit on the tag.
