Battlefield 3 out Fall 2011

Coming from COD (which is all I have ever played) it takes a lot of getting used to. If you keep playing though you learn that it is very team based and there is a lot more strategy that has to happen or you will just keep dying and your team will lose. So far I like it and it blows away all COD's up to this point.

Also keep in mind it is a beta so there will be bugs and glitches here and there.

Pleasantly surprised to read this. The COD players I've talked to have been so negative...I've always been more of a Battlefield person myself, it's always felt so much more realistic....

Yes it is more realistic and I must say that the sound on a 5.1 surround sound is incredible. If you don't have surround sound your missing out big time.

Agreed, I have 5.1 but I've also been using the beats that my wife got me for our anniversary to play as well....

I finally downloaded it today. One of the first things I did was go prone behind a rock.... and then through the ground. Did you know that beneath green grass, there is a blue sky with airplanes painted on it?

Finally got back on this side of the earth, and, being primarily an Xbox360 player playing this on the PS3, immediately pulled out the shank when I tried to kill an enemy peeking through some bushes. Why the hell would R1 be the trigger instead of R2?

I backed out of the game and went through the menus. Game controls > default, alternate, lefty, lefty alternate. huh? Can I set up my own controls?

I've played a few Battlefield games through the years: Modern Combat, BF2BC, etc and have always really despised COD. I've been a Ghost Recon fanboy for years. The Ghost Recon control scheme is always automatic for me. I've always struggled with the control schemes of other shooters.

There are some obvious flaws in the beta...but it is a beta. I think it will be fixed. The only bug that may take some time is the prone bug where you go under the ground...yes that's happened to me as well. They didn't include prone in BFBC2 for this reason. They couldn't figure out how to make it work with the Frostbite engine. Doesn't look they figured out how to make it work with the Frostbite 2 engine either.

If they can't figure it out, just take it out...although I do like the ability to go prone..it makes it seem more realistic to me. Some people hate it and I get why. It makes the game harder. And it tends to make people camp more...well in real war I doubt you'd see these same people running around like madmen.

In a real war, you wouldn't have 12 Soldiers taking an area the size of these maps. It would take two battalions to reach the LOAs on those huge maps.

The beta code is like 2 months old, the beta is strictly for testing network load capacity although some little things are being fixed from the feedback. Don't worry. Not to mention Microsoft frowns on demo/betas being over 2gig so they had less to work with.

I gave it another try, and here is what I posted on the IGN boards:

Thanks for all the feedback guys.

I definitely have reconsidered my position, especially if the graphics are gonna get better as you said.

I played it again for an hour or two last night and I finished as the 2nd best player once, and with a KDR of 1 or better each game. There are still some features I don't quite understand, like throwing out the med kits/ammo and the mobile spawn points (how do you set it?).

But, when I concentrated on the objectives and helping my team get to them, I had a much more pleasurable experience.

I can see how people say BF and CoD are two completely different games. BF seems like more of a simulator... for instance, idk how many times I ran into an opposing player or pack of them, and upon seeing them it took a second to register they weren't on my team because there isn't any giant RED "HEY THIS IS A BAD GUY" script above their head.

All in all, I enjoyed it for the most part last night once I understood it for what it was (and heard the graphics will indeed get better lol)!

use teamwork people, please!

Nobody cares about your k-d ratio in this game....I've played with people who went 4-17 in the beta and they were great teammates and were able to help us get the win on offense.....

    • Yeah, I am not giving up on him yet but I do think we need to see a pretty big step up this season to be convinced he is a long term solution. It is a shame that his development seemed to be stunted in 2023.
    • To put the question simply: Would you be happy with a Steelers trade that doesn't bring back their first-round pick next year? A potential trade between us and Pittsburgh is interesting because depending on which draft value chart you use, Pittsburgh has two totally natural trades available to them, but they're very different. The Jimmy Johnson chart says the difference between us at 8 and them at 21 is 600 points, or almost exactly the value of the last pick in the 1st round. That falls in line with how teams tend to discount future picks. 8 for 21 and next year's Pitt 1st is almost exactly equal. More modern charts (Chase Stuart, Fitz) are much flatter, and 8 for 21 and 83, Pittsburgh's next pick this year, are basically equal.  Now, the second one obviously won't actually happen--the Lions had to include pick 73 just to move from 29 to 24 last year, and Pittsburgh would clearly be making a much bigger jump. But given the flatness of this draft and the lack of blue-chip players at the top, would you accept some mix of 21, 83, and next year's non-first-rounders from Pittsburgh, or would you want Dan Morgan barred from every touching the draft again for accepting anything less than next year's first?
    • just ask XL, to date he is has never been wrong about what we are doing w/ our first pick
