PHD:P - Panther H - Hatin' D- Degree = Steve Young

Steve Young was right. We got the win, we won decisively, but we have to think about the future and problems that very well could hinder our performance in the playoffs. Has the huddle not heard of constructive criticism?

Not only that, but he's a former quarterback, so of course, the quarterback play wasn't going to go unnoticed.

I don't think he was showing any dislike for us, but I disagreed with his comments completely.

He basically was saying that we didn't get the ball to SS enough, or at least in the right position to fully exploit his ability. But we had 17 completions and Smith had over half of them. He had a long td, and several other nice grabs. All those smoke throws will help set him up over the next few weeks for some long catches, because Denver and company will be playing up a bit more. And it would have been ridiculous to suggest that we should have ran less and thrown more.

He didn't say we didn't throw it to Smitty enough, he said we didn't throw it to Smitty in "open space" enough, or in this case at all. He has a valid point. We used a lot of passing plays that utilized and required Smitty's abilities, but we didn't use his ability to its highest potential. He is dangerous when we get him the ball in the open field, and Young wants to see more of that.

I think I covered that:)

I still disagree with him though. Tampa's pass defense focused on him completely. Its easy to say we should do this or that, but its far more difficult to actually do it.

And I know that Young was a QB and knows more than I do, but there were others there that also played and disagreed with Young. So, it is what it is.

Always wondered why they didn't use Smitty on those little bubble screens(or whatever they are called) like NE does with Welker. It's a prime way to get a guy in space who is a good YAC guy. Then I saw them run something like it last night near the goalline. I wouldn't be surprised to see that more in the future and out further from the goalline. Now that htey have an OL that can pancake bitches and Moose is a good blocker, I don't see why that can't be a money play for Smitty sometimes.

When JD is struggling with consistency why would we not try to get Steve into open space with screens, reverses (Hes only got 2 rush attempts all year!) quick slants, crossing patterns.

I get what Steve Young was sayin. He did say that Jake had a bad game, which is bull sh*t he had good completion % and that one pick, I mean come on. I think his only point is that he's saying Steve Smith is the most explosive player in the game and we should try to get him the ball more than 9 times in a game.

    • Respectfully, I completely disagree. Last year we were:  32nd in Sacks. 32nd in Turnovers.  32nd in Rushing TDs allowed  29th in Scoring.  We were absolutely atrocious on defense last year and that was with a full stable of weapons in Derek Brown, Frankie Luvu and Brian Burns that played all 17 games.  Using yards per game as a metric to guage our success lacks the context that because our offense was so inept teams were not driving the length of the field, they were starting at their 40-50 yard line.  This year, our Defense ranks:  31st in Sacks. Tied for 19th in Turnovers  31st in Rushing TDs allowed 32nd in Scoring  His defense fails to get pressure, fails to turn the ball over and fails to stop the run. Three things you absolutely have to do to be successful in the NFL.  Denver meanwhile has not missed a beat without him.  If another team wants to hire him as a HC and the Panthers get two 3rds for it I'll wish him the best and pack his bags myself.
