Marty Hurney is a terrible GM

I wouldn't say Rogers "is a guy who does nothing but manage the salary cap for the Panthers".

In Hurney's own words, "Salary cap/football systems coordinator Rob Rogers has done a great job. He negotiates all of our contracts."

Well, I guess I was wrong about him only doing one thing, but I knew he was the cap guru.

Marty is good, we just need to figure out what we are going to do at the quarterback position. Replace Julius Peppers b*tch ass, get another Defensive Tackle, and get another player in the secondary, and we will be in the hunt for a Super Bowl championship. Marty Hurney is not the problem...............

Actually...

some other teams would probably let Gross loose because they already have his replacement behind him. That's how they save money.

Panthers need Gross because they don't have a younger option to go for (and it's NOT Omiyale)

Well that is one of the dumbest things I have seen posted on here.

So, you are saying it is dumb for a team to not to let their All-Pro LT walk in FA (when he is only 26 yo), just so they can play a younger player.

Gross is not an aging vet. He is just starting to hit his prime. Letting him walk would be an absolutely stupid move. OL is all about chemistry. We now have that....and you (in your all mighty wisdom) think they should not do everything in their power to preserve that.

You so not let your franchise players walk when they are in their prime.

Please!!!!

Some of you guys are training your guns on the wrong target.

By most accounts, Hurney is mainly a cap manager. He has the last word on personnel matters, but he trusts the word of the people in the scouting department to feed him the right information.

At the college level, that falls under Don Gregory. On the pro level, Mark Koncz.

Drafting has markedly improved since Gregory took over from Tony Softli. No change in the pro scouting department, yet. Some of us think there ought to be one, but it hasn't happened thus far and there's no definitive indication it will other than that individual scouts have been kept on short contracts (similar to the assistant coaches).

If you want to complain about the cap managementr, Hurney and Rob Rogers are the guys to talk about.

If you want to complain about personnel acquisition, you need to look a little deeper.

You get lucky sometimes.

Right. When Hurney (or Fox) make smart moves or good decisions they just get lucky. But when something goes wrong, they're idiots and should be fired. I say they should hire you. You're obviously a genius and right now you could be making millions working for the Panthers organization. So many of your ideas are useful and have real merit -- you know, when it comes to running an NFL franchise. So, please, send in your resume (you just might be running things one day!).

I was just reading Florio's piece on all of the power Gross has over the Panthers organization in the next couple of weeks and made me realize just how bad Hurney is.

How did he manage to let it get to the point where half of our Pro Bowlers are going to be UFAs in a few weeks if nothing is done? If he and the team knew that Peppers didn't want to play with us anymore at the start of the season when he turned down that massive contract offer, why not trade him before the trading deadline so Peppers' agent couldn't make a power play by going public with Peppers' intent not to play here next year? Also, since he knew Peppers was unlikely to be here next year, why didn't he make it a priority to get JG resigned during the season like he did with Gamble?

Why are you making assumptions? Nobody knew Peppers wanted out until after the end of the season.

As for the other question, some players are easier to do contracts with. Gross wanted to show he was worth LT money, and he is. Why you throwing Hurney under the bus before FA anyways? Seems pretty ignorant.

And even if they suspected Pep wanted out which they could have depending on the nature of the contract discussions that we as fans aren't privy to and the fact he wouldn't sign prior to this year, how in the hell would it have been better for the team to try to trade Pep before 2008? For one, he was coming off a down year and had one year left on his contract. You think the team would get even close to a good value in trade vs letting him play out the season and at least getting probably a better year out of him based on his past history than the one he had in 2007 ? Even if he walks scot free after this year (which I hope they prevent via the franchise tag) his value to the DL this year especially vis a vis the depth they had there was IMO far greater than anything they probably could have gotten in trade prior to the year.

lol...I try always to look at the big picture which is what GMs (or anyone in charge of any company) have to do. Not saying I am right by any means, but sometimes it helps to figure out why teams made moves (or didn't). I do think they mismanaged contracts at different times and perhaps gave some guys too much money, but hey, sh*t happens. As long as it isn't a trend and they continue to try to improve, I don't damn a FO for a few eff-ups (provided they aren't things like taking on a guy that is not of the character they have always looked for like taking on a guy like Haynesworth for example). ALL teams have had eff ups, and BIG ones.

Funny. Tarik Glenn, all pro LT for Indy retires and out from the backups emerges a 2nd year player called Tony Ugoh.

New England linemen get replaced frequently with little or no dropoff.

And GTFO out with the beatdown. You're making yourself look a fool with the personal attack. A year ago you probably wouldn't even recognize Gross as a franchise anything player. He was solid, probably our only solid lineman but he wasn't Steve Smith caliber to anybody.

Whether or not you like it some players just want to hit the market, and what the f*ck do you do then when you realize they just want to leave and money isn't going to solve the problem?

Ugoh started as a rookie...just wanted to point that out.

Marty did all he could. I do think he could have been a little more aggressive with Gross but he has done wonders for this team. There isn't GM in this league that hasn't floundered on a player or two. It happens, it is the nature of the game. Look at our 4 pro-Bowlers all drafted by Hurney. The overhaul of the OL was his doing and the depth on this team is pretty damn good.

It doesn't matter and will never end. We have too many wannabe GM's out there that think that every move is a no brainer and Carolina is the ONLY place to play. In our minds it is, but with or without Gross and Peppers this team will be there next year Fighting for a playoff spot.

Go Panthers
