Peterson 1, then Marvin Austin in the 3rd.

Something tells me that Rivera's arrival may have increased the chances of our keeping Richard Marshall.

You can debate on whether that's a good thing or not, but that's the feeling I get.

Gamble/Marshall/Captain would be a pretty good set of CB's with a good d-line.

I get the same feeling. He'll be better with better DL play. Hopefully we can keep him with a modest contract and keep our back 7 in tact.

I like the way you are thinking but the way I see it is that people get too caught up in what we need rather than what is available. I really feel like AJ green is the best player in this draft and if he blows up the combine then that will solidify it. How do you pass on the best player of the draft (no QB worthy) at the first pick? Yeah fairley fills a need but green represents the best player and will help Jimmy and the rest of the offense grow. I understand we spent picks there last year but look at the packers...they have 4 weapons at WR and look at how Aaron Rodgers has grown. Even the steelers have multiple talented receivers. I think green should be the guy unless someone else (like petersen or fairley) just blows up there workouts.

I definitely feel that way.. he is physical and perhaps that means Gamble and Marshall play more at the line, particularly bump and run.. with a pass rush on the DLine, and whatever blitz packages Rivera has up his sleeve, I feel content to say we'll be fine with Gamble/Marshall/Munnerlyn.. this would depend on Marshall accepting a reasonable contract.

now that would mean CB is taken care of.. DT and QB.. and as unrealistic as Green is at WR to some, it would make even more sense to me now..

Especially since I don't think QB is taken care of this year.. if so, it'll be drafting Newton as a project.. we'll see if that happens..

of course, all of this is just my opinion..

Honestly our biggest need is at DT right now. IF Cullen Jenkins is on the FA market. Pick him up and then Draft Nick Fairly with the first pick of the draft. Then you got a big line up front. With Jenkins and Fairly might be like having Sam Adams and Tony Siragusa type Dline with a great linebacker core and decent secondary. We might can have the Ravens type Dline up front.:reddevil:

If Peterson can be a shut down corner, and there is no obvious QB to take with this pick, we should use it to take a dominate player at his position.

Fairley isn't a top 10 DT amongst other NFL DT's but Peterson has a chance to be top 10 (if not top 5) amongst other CB's in the league.

I don't think Marvin Austin, if he's still around, would be a HUGE drop off in talent at the DT spot. Besides, we're still going to suck and get a top 10 pick next year and can get a QB and DT then with 2 top 45 picks next year.

OK. i've made up my mind. can someone please relay to Hurney what I've decided for him to do? Thanks.

If we take a WR or CB first overall I quit because we are hands down the worst run teamin the NFL. Folks wanting a WR or CB don't understand football

Marvin Austin is a waste of a pick.
I wouldn't say he is a waste of a pic. He would be a good pickup in the 3rd round of course. But he would be good for backup for a year of 2. He missed this whole season. So it would take him a whole year to really get back into football shape. Unless he comes out at the combine and blows the scouts away for some weird reason or another. But I don't see that happening. If he would have played this year. Then he would be a top 10. But unless his stock rises through combine and before the draft. I don't see him going in the 1st or 2nd round. 3rd more likly.

Petersen is a great corner but would be wasted in our defense which is mostly zone under Meeks who is in charge of D backs. Picking him would be a waste of talent given we don't run that many man schemes. Conventional wisdomis you don't need great corners to run a cover 2 shell.

Green would be a good choice if we had a Qb who could throw down the field. Our best hope with Clausen is to hold the score down so we don't have to score 24 points a game. So defense would help the most this year and Fairley is the biggest need.

Following that same logic, we probably NEED Peterson who is a great corner because our defense might not play much cover 2 under McDermott who is our defensive coordinator. I think Rivera will have more say than either Meeks or McDermott with the defense though, and he's stated he will play to our strengths. If we get a great corner in Peterson, then pair him with Gamble and our other corners, it opens up our front seven and lets our linebackers wreak havoc blitzing in what looks to be an aggressive Rivera defense. Conventional wisdom is you need great players to have a great team. :driving:

Geeeez. You sound like Fox is still here.

We wil play mostly zone under McDermott. It is also what Meeks is best at. Peterson may end up being a great corner but again it is not a critical need for us in our defense. DT is a much bigger need. We have Gamble and Munnerlyn who can both play man coverage. We have no DTs worth keeping right now.

Conventional wisdom is you need great players in critical areas to succeed. Having a great right tackle is fine but if you don't have a great QB, you aren't going deep in the playoffs most years. For us defensive line is a much bigger need than a corner at this point. There will be corners in the third who are still very good if we go that direction. If we go Fairley in the first and there is another great DT in the third, I say pick him up as well. We need several great DTs at this point.
