Under the current system Johnson would be a restricted free agent and would get a first and third tender. If the CBA get reworked and it goes back to four then he would be unrestricted. So I doubt we go the tag route on him. Can't see us spending 12.3 million on him for one year. I would think we look for a long term contract at a fair price. Because honestly he is a contract year performer. Up until this year there was nothing remarkable about him but potential. I hope and expect he will keep it up. Still I can't see him being worth 12 million.

By all acounts I have read, the RFA rule will go back to 4 years. Yes, if we tag him we will be paying a somewhat unproven player $12mil for a year. But if you are worried about the guy possibly being a contract performer guy, wouldn't you rather test the guy out for one more year, before giving him a contract that will probably be worth at least $50mil over its term.

I think you are right about the RFA, I think it will go back to four. As for tagging him, he had a great year and I think that they want him long-term and he wants to be here. I just don't see them tagging him for 12 million. On a long term deal he would get something closer to 5 years- 40 million or 8 million a year. He made a million this year. If we don't tag him I can tell you who is going to try and sign him. Yep, Fox in Denver. I still don't see us starting down the Peppers road with Johnson.

I agree that, based on current player compensation, as we know it, he would get a deal in the $8mil/yr range. The only reason I would say $50mil+ is once a new deal is signed, the cap will, more than likey rise again. Combine this with the rookie pay scale, and I believe that veteran contracts will see a big boost.

But, as a RFA we could tender him a 1 and 3 tender. Thus, someone would have to compesate us at that level to sign him.....not going to happen.

Would not expect a team to franchise a RFA, unless he was an absolute beast that a team would be willing to part with a 1st and a 3rd for.....which I don't see Johnson as being in that category.

See above. He deserves top NFL Center money, and he will get it. He does not deserve top LT money.

Like most players that receive the franchise tag, you don't expect him to play under it. You put it on him so that it blocks another team from signing him.

Kalil is vital to our success. There isn't another player on our team that can step in and produce at that position. You can't say that about Williams, Johnson, Marshall or Davis.

The Panthers are contemplating using the franchise tag on RB DeAngelo Williams, according to league sources. Teams have a 14-day window to use the tag beginning Feb. 10. It's estimated Williams would make about $9.8 million if the new rules of the next CBA are similar to the old ones. Panthers RapidReports

The Panthers have made it a priority to re-sign three potential free agents: DE Charles Johnson, C Ryan Kalil and LB Thomas Davis. That won't happen until there is a new CBA, but expect all three to be back next season. The same can't be said for starting CB Richard Marshall, who has said he doesn't expect to return.
