Kiper takes Locker and Mallet off his big board (top 25)

The fact is, if this was Ryan Mallett or Blaine Gabbert, we wouldn't be having this debate, and people certainly wouldn't be labeling this workout as a "publicity stunt".

Cam Newton is a polarizing figure though, so he's gonna piss some people off no matter what he does.

You know we didn't label it that, but rather that was the quote from an NFL executive right?

No other player has been dumb enough to do this.

If Cam didn't have so many detracters they probably wouldn't be doing this. They're not stupid, they know what people are saying about him and they want to prove them wrong. I don't see why so many people are using this to bash the kid. He will either look good in the workout, or he won't. Let's wait and see.

One thing I do know for sure, is that Jimmy Clausen showed the scouts that he could do what everybody says that Cam can't do IE...read defenses, show good footwork, go through his progressions...etc, and it sure as hell didn't guarantee that he could start and win right away.

It is impossible to show those things (read defenses and go through progressions) in a workout. You are not in game situations...and do not have defensive players trying to rip your head off.

That is why Rivera looks at GAME tape instead of combines and workouts.

That's a pretty big assumption, and not a valid one :nonod:

Anybody that pulls a stunt which ticks off the NFL scouts who'll have a big say in their future is making a mistake. I don't care who they are.

I call bullshit. I'd be saying the same thing about them if they were doing it. Drop the whole "YOU'RE MISTREATING CAM NEWTON!!!" It's not true and it's silly.

If you're going to be drafted, you don't want to turn off the people making those decisions. Maybe they haven't really been turned off. Maybe they won't care when they see how AWESOME he is. I don't know. All I know is what I've read, which so far, is that scouts and GMs don't really like the idea and think it's a publicity stunt.

Earlier in this thread (or maybe it was another QB one) I suggested Mallett may be addicted to coke. Clearly, it's because he's a polarizing figure.

It's just a freakin workout. You're acting as if this kid is attempting career suicide just because he wants to prove that he has made progress as a passer. Everybody needs to just get the hell over it, and that includes that anonymous NFL exec.

What you fail to realize is it's not going to prove that, or anything. All it's going to do is build more press, it will in no way, shape, or form do anything for his draft stock. That's the problem. Why do it? Why are you a media *****? How does that affect your career later on? Why is your father so involved? Why can't you wait until the combine?

It brings up more questions than answers.

I actually think it could raise his Big Board status :D That's always good. It may bring Kiper some more money when he says "Newton moves up the Big Board, get insider access to know how much!" All publicity is good publicity, right?

...but I don't know that this alone will matter to scouts in any positive way, because if he doesn't do well at later scout-run workouts it won't matter at all... so assuming he was going to do those anyway not sure the point of all this.

You guys may be being a little naive as well. Did any of these reports say where on the draft board these unnamed scouts were. Let me tell you how a lot of this works. Say you are a GM or Scout for a team that is picking @15 or so.

You watch some film on Cam (or anybody he is just who we are talking about) and they REALLY like what they see. A reporter comes up to this GM and says, "Hey what do you think about Cam Newton, just tell me and I won't name you as a source."

Now if that GM or scout liked Cam and was serious about drafting him do you think he would say, "Wow man he is great. I think he is a future MVP in this league." No. You would downplay his potential or even talk down on him because you are trying to manipulate his draft status so maybe he slips to you. This is VERY common, don't fool yourself.

I have one anecdotal story about something like this:

I played college basketball, and there was a coach that was all over me. Called as often as he was allowed, flooded my mailbox with letters, begged me to committ, you name it he did it.

I signed with another school.

Fast forward about 5 years. I was hanging out with some coaches at a camp and when I mentioned how hard this coach recruited me they all started laughing. I asked them, "What was so funny?"

They told me that whenever they crossed paths with this coach at an AAU tourney, or camp, or conference, when they would ask him what he thought of me as a player. This coach that was all over me would say things like, "He can't defend at this level, he will never get his shot off, he is too slow, I don't think he can be effective at this level, etc."

I was like, "Really??"

And they told me, "Don't sweat it everyone does those things. If he didn't think you were good he actually wouldn't have said those things. Take it as a compliment because it means he really wanted you and was trying to thin out the competition as much as he could"

These same stupid games are being played right now so if a scout decides to give his take off the record take that with a grain of salt. A lot of these scouts bitching to the media are guys praying that guy slips to the middle of the first round so they can ****** him up.

That's not the important part. Jimmy worked out FOR the scouts, not just in front of the scouts. Scouts like to run the workouts so they can make judgments on things they need to see.

this whole line of argument doesn't hold water because if a team is serious about drafting Cam Newton they will hold their own private workout.

Last year Bradford had his workout on pro day but then the Rams brought him in after that to have a private workout.

the team scouts won't be running any drills at the combine or at pro day they will be observing and THEN if they are serious will bring them in for a private workout. So the fact is they will be only watching whether they are there or watching it on television.

This isn't recruiting, no team has to "win" his services. Using that mentality, no player would ever have anything good said about them. Get real.

Also, if you're going to let me in on how NFL scouts think, I guess I'll bump into you around the combine sometime right? I go every year since a lot of scouts and GMs I have personal relationships with. Maybe around Cam's workout? I'll be at both, let me know if you wanna meet up I've never met another huddler before.

The point is that those workouts are aimed to show scouts what they want to see. This workout is aimed at showing off Cam, not his limitations. They will have worked this script to death and anything he doesn't feel comfortable with will be gone.
