Something to think about (QB option)

So as mentioned in the "Rivera on WFNZ" thread and the "Coaching Connections" thread, this team has gone out of its way to put together an offensive staff that's worked or played in the Coryell system. Specifically, every coach hired so far has a connection to either Norv Turner or his mentor, Ernie Zampese.

Also rather heavily discussed in this forum: the fact that a short time ago, Bengals QB Carson Palmer issued a "trade me or I'll retire" ultimatum to team ownership.

Now, with those things in mind, take a moment and do a quick search for the name of the Bengals quarterback coach, the guy who's mentored Palmer throughout his entire career.

Better yet, I'll save you the trouble (link)

Interesting :sosp:

For the record, I'm not the world's biggest Carson Palmer fan. I'm also extremely doubtful that the Bengals will cave to his demands. Even if they do give in, you can expect the requested compensation to be way more than the Panthers would want to give up.

With that said, a long time ago the Bengals did trade an unhappy Boomer Esaiason a year after drafting David Klingler to be his successor, so there is at least a sort of precedent.

Likely to happen? Doubt it, and honestly I'm not so sure I'd want it to. Still, given the circumstances, it's something to keep in the back of your mind.

i don't trust palmer's arm anymore than i do jake's.

he'd be a decent vet to have around if we were going to bother with an old vet, but i wouldn't want to give up what we'd likely have to in acquiring him. i expect it will probably be a trade similar to the mcnabb trade. redksins gave up 2nd last year and a 3rd rounder this year i think. just not worth it, imo.

i don't want us starting an old QB, i'd rather start a young one and let him develop on the field in action. having palmer around would be too much of a temptation when the young one struggles.

How did Boomer do after he was traded?

Decent.

He went to the Jets, where my primary memory of him is watching him get knocked cold by Bruce Smith after an idiot rookie tackle thought it'd be cool to trash talk him.

(Smith stood over Esaiason in shock and regret after it happened)

Speaking of Smiths, in a similar vein, another name to keep in mind will be 49ers QB Alex.

Smith did some of his best work the year that Turner was OC for the 49ers. Harbaugh has said that he's agreeable to keeping Smith in San Fran, but it's kind of up in the air as to whether that happens (Smith should be a free agent if the CBA is completed).

Again, that's not a name I'm thrilled about, but it's a possibility to consider.

I love me some Carson

Him/Moore/Armanti would be my ideal stable next year, no matter how unlikely it is

you sick bastard.

I would prefer both Palmer and Smith to the other options available both in FA and the draft, but... I don't see Palmer as wanting to come here at all... unless Rivera is an amazing salesman.

Wait... so Armanti Edwards is a good 3rd string QB, but Newton is a "project" that we shouldn't consider drafting?

I just need to put you on ignore.

there's a difference between having someone who is already on the roster be an emergency QB and drafting someone early in the draft.
