[The Athletic] Dane Brugler's 2025 7-round Mock Draft

Demetrius Knight is a steal at this point. He is flying under the radar but Luke Kuechly and Mike Rucker voluntarily brought him up in their interviews with the Panthers. He is smart, instinctive, and violent. There is a lot of chatter of Jalon Walker possibly being considered at 4 with Patriots and Jaguars at 5. If those teams are considering him at that high in the draft, we shouldn't complain picking him up at 8. Teams who interviewed Walker says his football IQ is equivalent to a defensive coordinator. I would be thrilled with Walker.

Panthers' selections:

  • 1.8 - Jalon Walker, LB/EDGE, Georgia
  • 2.57 - TJ Sanders, DT, South Carolina
  • 3.74 - Jack Bech, WR, TCU
  • 4.111 - Billy Bowman Jr, S, Oklahoma
  • 4.114 - Dorian Strong, CB, Virginia Tech
  • 5.140 - Demetrius Knight Jr, LB, South Carolina
  • 5.146 - Caleb Rogers, G, Texas Tech
  • 5.163 - Jarquez Hunter, RB, Auburn
  • 7.230 - Maxen Hook, S, Toledo

Don't love the first three, but the back half is strong, imo.

If we get Jarquez with that pick, it will be an absolute steal.

That Brooks over Zack Frazier pick still stings. Grabbing a RB who isn’t going to play much in year 1 (before he got hurt again) makes no sense with the loaded 2025 RB draft. There’s so much talent that we’ll see some solid day 3 RBs. Not just surprises like 2024’s day 3 RBs but a few that would be day 2 picks every other year like Brooks.

now what if I told you we traded up for him in the process burning 2 5th round picks?

The problem I have is even if you remove hindsight, it was just a fuging bad pick at the time too. Weak RB class, not at all BPA, injury issues.....no bueno.

Thanks Ice and Juan.  I appreciate people who produce and bring content to the table.

Without further ado, my reactions, and I will try to be "laconic" (word of the day):

8- Edge/LB Jalon Walker:  A great football player.  He must be used properly.  Does not eliminate the need for an edge--and we do not draft an edge here.
57- DT T.J. Sanders:  I really liked him at SC--a beast. A DE.  I am not sure how we will rotate in at NT--and I see NT as our biggest DL need IF we play Wharton at DE.
74- WR Jack Bech:  Love this guy.  a Dawg.  Eric Decker II.
111- S Billy Bowman Jr.  Good value here, but I was hoping for a S earlier.  I want one of the top 2 because if both S have position versatility, and we have Walker and DL with position versatility, we'd be hard to play.
114- CB Dorian Strong:  Fine. A depth piece behind Horn and Jackson (he he). However, I think CB is a bigger need than people are projecting.
140- LB Demetrius Knight Jr.:  Another Gamecock--love him.  Morgan will love him.  A dawg.  A steal here.
146- G Caleb Rogers:  Don't we have enough guards?  Moton is in his final year and we don't draft a T?
163- RB Jarquez Hunter:  Not sure I have ever heard of him--probably suing his parents for naming him Jarquez--but the name does mean "Strong and valiant" if spelled correctly.  Do his friends call him Jar Jar?  I would.
230- S Maxen Hook  The great grand son of Peter Pan's nemesis.  He has both hands--for now, but that is because Toledo did not play the Florida Gators.

From what I've heard, if the Panthers select Walker, he will be used primarily as an edge and be given the opportunity to take the starting spot away from Clowney. They will move him around a bit but mainly edge and rushing the passer.
