Drafting a Friend for Jimmy Jam....

this would be a good plan. rudolph will be good and clausen's familiarity with him would help out clausen a lot if the team is bound and determined to keep with clausen for a while.

and to all those whining over missing out on fairley...he's a gamble. true, most players out there are, but there are very few players in this draft that are on par talent wise with other years. this years DTs is a weaker class than last years which was unusually strong. if we were to draft fairley @ #1 we would be getting someone that is of much lesser value than what was gotten at #2 last year. i'm not too thrilled with that. best value this year is through FA for DTs. it's a really good class that will/should be available that would be a big upgrade for us. overall the FAs com9ing out will be much better quality than what we'll find in the draft.

also, jimmy johnson's value chart used for trading picks will still be the standard this year. value may decrease somewhat, but we should still make out pretty well.

i just want to know who is going to give up their 2nd rounder to take this first pick. i would love for us to New England Patriot someone but I dont see it happening unless we trade out of the top 10 to the top 20.
we'll be getting more than a 2nd rounder or it won't happen.

anyone suggesting that we get only that is just being ridiculous. we will get at least that and a first from next year. if we can't get that then we sit where we are. hurney does some crazy stuff from time to time but he ain't that stupid. this would be far and away dumber than the whole armanti edwards trade.

He, like Jimmy, is a baby killer. Looking at him against Pac10 schools besides UW and WSU, he's had 1 catch for 1 yard, 3 catches for 9 yards, 5 for 70 (Stanford before they were good, finished year 5-7), and 1 catch for 4 yards. I don't know how well that will translate over to the NFL.

Just worries me a little.

its not about hurney being stupid, its the other team would have to be that stupid. There is not a huge drop off from the top guy in this draft and the #15 guy for a team to give up that much to get there. I mean what player in this draft is that good or so much better than anyone else at his position that a team would give up that much? we get the #1 pick and people dont know how to act. Again, I am all for robbing teams like that cuz it would be a total rip off. I think a first and second if it was the #15 pick is far enough compensation to get out of the #1 spot, so much so I dont see anyone doing, I would love to be wrong but as usual, I probably aint.

No please. Drafting a friend for f**king Jimmy Clausen? are you kidding me? Just to make that little b*tch happy? this isn't pre-school, it's the National Football League.

I think it's more about getting him another weapon in the passing game then getting a guy who he's friends with....

it's not so much about the friend thing as it is that he is legitimately the best TE in this class and is one of the best ones in recent years. he is what rivera and chud are looking for in a TE. he fits what the coaching staff is looking for. that he has a relationship with the guy that is penciled in as starter is gravy.

The problem is do you take a loss as far as trade value is concerned for the number one pick. We would be getting RAPED trading the number one pick to SD for their first and second.....

And A.J. won't even use lube.

San Diego once gave up an entire draft class to get Eric Weddle.

Chicago didn't do much with those picks thankfully (Dan Bazuin, Garrett Wolfe, Kevin Payne, and Marcus Harrison). Of course, had our FO went Weddle 1 and Buster 2 then we would've had those picks. We had 3 tradeups alone in last years draft to get Mathews, Donald Butler, and Cam Thomas.

someone is going to get robbed one way or the other. we would have to be desperate to trade down for us to take just a 2nd rounder, though and i just don't see us being that desperate.

i can't see why someone would want to give up all that much for someone in the early part of the draft b/c, lke you sid, the value just isn't there. however, if a trade were to actually take place, it would have to involve a lot more than just a 2nd rounder and switching firsts. if we can't get more than that, a lot more than that, we shouldn't trade.

you can argue either way if desperate or not, we dont have a 2nd rounder so saying we trade down to pick one up, could be desperate. I personally dont want to draft out of the top 10, we earned that poo by sitting thru a very tough season of horrible football. Im all for making our team better, and without that 33rd pick, getting extra picks is a good deal for the most part. Say if the Cards for some reason REALLY wanted the first pick, I think dropping only 4 spots, their 3rd would be enough compensation b/c it would be the #5 pick in that round(unless they traded it and i'm not aware of it).

I'll add, trading that first pick only makes sense if we dont love a certain player with that pick and we think we can move down and get someone they do love. It was a great risk/reward to trade down and still land beason a few years back, mainly b/c he wasnt as highly touted as some other guys, and our scouting/coaching/gm were right. I am going to be excited no matter what happens b/c I see us getting better regardless unless a QB is taken first.
