a closer look at marcell dareus

Recommended Posts

Seriously?? They make a huge deal about his play against a Michigan State team that lost 49-7.

They talk about his great play against J'Michael Deane who is 6'5" and 312. After all Deane was selected in the third round in the Canadian Football league in 2010. He is ranked the 40th best offensive tackle in this year's draft.

Dareus is a good football player but better than Fairley??? Not really. Dareus was not that dominant all year and had a great game against a Michigan State team that played very poorly. We wouldn't pick him number 1 in the draft.

He's been better than Fairley for like 3 years. Were his stats better than Fairley's? No. Did he have as many Sportscenter moments? No. But he played a different position in a different defense that doesn't bring a lot of hype for his role. I think he's got more talent and more drive than Fairley, and Fairley has better measurables at the moment. I think Dareus would be a very good DT in our defense, maybe not racking up the stats, but doing what we would need from a DT.

I am concerned about Fairley's "one year wonder" status and the issues he has with pad level...

I noticed Fairley does play high up, and I dont think Rivera wants someone with issues like he has had. I'd love to see us trade down some and take Peterson, then trade up our second to take Paea who will drop possibly out of first, or the UNC/Clemson/Illinois DT's who are all good. But truth is we need two DT and will probably draft a TE early.

Dareus and Fairley are two very different DT's. In simple terms Fairley = Jenkins and Dareus = Kemo.

Fairley is a dynamic 3 tech penetrator who blew up last season. He'll spend a good bit of time in opposing backfields, but will need to improve lower body strength to anchor against the run.

Dareus is more of a NT who will eat up space, consume blockers and allow others to penetrate. He's got a thick lower body, plays with good leverage until tired and is hard to move off his spot.

Both are equally important, but who has a better chance of applying pressure and stopping the run? I believe it's Fairley. I also see the need for someone who can eliminate space for QB's to step up and throw. Charles Johnson would have had 5 more sacks if QB's couldn't just step out of the way.

Dareus was hurt all year really. Hamstring and other leg injuries. Really he played better 2 years ago when they won the BCS Champsionship than he did last year.

Dareus is more polished than Fairley. You can really see this when they play in person(which I got to see both this past year :D). He uses his hands better he is stonger especilly in the lower body. But Fairely has more of the stuff you just can't teach. Quickness, speed, and when he wants he just can't be blocked.

Dareus might be better his rookie year but, if Fairley has the desire to be, Fairley has the talent to put up Warren Sapp kind of numbers and just be at another level than just about any other DL in the game except for Suh.

Anyway thats just what I think. And if you have a chance to draft a guy like that and you think you can movidate him you do it.

na i wont waste my time b/c if u seriously think someone will give their 2nd to move up 6 or 7 spots, youre just ignorant.

U might want to look at prior draft day trades involving the #1 pick. Lots of compensation given up to move to that spot.

so u think a team will give up their top 5 second round pick to move up 4 spots? i would love that but you dont last long in the nfl making bad decisions like that.

    • The coach- Canales was a rookie hc and at times looked like it. But he did manage to revamp the offense, helped Bryce not look like the biggest bust of the draft, exuded positivity,  and made the panthers watchable again. We have a viable head coach for the first time since rivera The gm- Morgan had some hits and some big misses. Hits- the ol, Coker, demani, dj at first. Misses- almost every d player signed, brooks, the jury is out on x. I get what he was trying to do with brooks/Hubbard but it blew up in his face. Hopefully he learns from his mistakes. But he did trade mingo for a 4th, managed to get a 2nd rounder this year from the Rams and I am a fan of constantly churning the bottom of the roster The draft- x can be a solid player but not until he catches the ball, brooks was a high risk pick that didn't work out, Wallace, demani and Chau Smith can be solid contributors and showed glimpses, Coker and jt should be mainstays. And flipping a 7th round lb that was about to be cut for Jackson was a great move.  The offense- had its ups and downs but Bryce has turned from one of the biggest busts in nfl history to a potential franchise qb, that change is worth its weight in gold, thielen was crafty and underrated as usual, Coker was a gem, jt was the solid but has some growing to do, and Hubbard has been awesome, the o line was much improved as well The defense- well...they set records, injuries, poor coaching (imo), bad playcalling and just plain sucking this defense needs everything to change, we need horn and Jackson back and we get brown back but we need bodies and an identity. If they can do with the def what they did with the o then we can challenge for the division bc we already have some pieces there.  Overall- this was a growth year full of questions and some of the major ones were answered(qb, coach). For the first time in a long time the season didn't end depressingly and I do have cautious optimism for next year. But they need to learn from the mistakes of 2024 and if they do I like where this team is headed. On to the draft and 2025
    • I disagree. It’s not hard to double a WR and still play the run. It’s called a bracket which you can use with a drop down safety or an OLB. Look up how it’s done. Also in obvious passing situations, doubling a wr is not hard. Falcons torched us in obvious passing situations time after time. 2 min drill, 3rd and long to where there’s no excuse to not focus more on Drake London. Mooney was out. London was the only WR Penix was looking at.  Evero simply can’t make adjustments. He’ll most likely be fired next year. Wish we would’ve just ripped the bandaid off this year. To call all people morons who think we can do better than Evero is a very ignorant and arrogant statement. Who the hell are you?
    • As a rookie head coach, I think he exceeded expectations.  We looked competitive in almost all our games.  I don't think he's hit his ceiling.  7 of 10 for this year.
