In This Thread I Talk Rationally About Drafting A QB #1 Overall.

Most franchise QBs go early in the first round.

Heres a list of franchise QB'S from 2010 that were NOT 1st rounders

Brett Favre- 2nd round

Drew Brees- 2nd round

Matt Schaub- 3rd round

David Garrard- 4th round

Matt Hasselbeck- 6th round

Tom Brady- 6th round

Matt Cassell- 7th round

Tony Romo- Undrafted

8 Qb's that have led their teams for years. There are not many franchise QB's these days and I named most of them, and they are not even 1st rounders.

You like to talk about the "rule" but the rule says, if you can get a guy with the 10th or 15th pick, then then trade down, gain more picks, and get your guy. There is no need to draft a guy that isn't good enough to be taken #1 overall, especially if you can get him later on. Also you're going to have to pay him #1 money, when you could have gotten him a lot cheaper

lol David Garrard but i guess if you want to count him then every single one of those guys with the exception of Matt Cassel (who, i don't know why you included him because no, he hasn't led the Chiefs for years but whatever, same with Favre-Vikings) will be 30 or older by the time next season kicks in. Brett Favre might stay retired and Hasselbeck is way past his prime

oh btw your "franchise QB" is best defined as a guy the organization invests faith and money in to bring stability and consistency to the QB position for years. That means guys like Sanchez, Eli Manning, Peyton Manning, Sam Bradford, Philip Rivers, Ben Roethlisberger, Joe Flacco, Josh Freeman, Matt Ryan, Aaron Rodgers btw where do you think these players are getting drafted? Late round? UDFA?

For people who weren't drafted franchise QBs but became one would include Tom Brady, Tony Romo, Matt Schaub, and Drew Brees. I wouldn't even really put Warner on that list because he bounced around from team to team even though he was a very good QB.

That means if you're scouting the draft, and you find a QB with enough potential and enough skills and a good head on his shoulders that can provide you with the talent you need at that position where you don't have a proven guy with most of his career ahead of him, you grow a set and you make the pick. Stop gaps are temporary patch ups that leave you looking for an answer in many cases two years or less.

Yea Arizona was doing great with Warner but now he left them and they have nobody at that position again, so they'll be looking to draft another QB. Everybody thought Baltimore would be a force when they picked up the veteran McNair and it did get them a first round playoff bye but the Colts rolled over them and McNair retired the next offseason. The year after that they draft Flacco while like 5 picks earlier we went the "safe" route and picked a guy that just gets rushing yards and plays like less than half the offensive snaps who hasn't helped us win 4 playoff games, he hasn't even helped us win one yet. Just going with the "safe" choice doesn't always bring prosperity, and a lot of franchises that have risen up recently were teams that had the stones to make the pick.

Miami thought Jake Long and Chad Henne were a better idea than Matt Ryan first overall and the Falcons have been better than Miami.

I don't know why people would "feel better" about taking a QB below #1 and not #1. Unless you're talking about trading way back, like into the mid-end of the first, you're better off taking who you think is the best QB in the draft if that is your intention... because chances are unless you think it's Ricky Stanzi or something, they'll be gone by the time you pick again.

If you're sold on a QB enough to take him in the first, i think you really ahve to consider taking him #1... especially if there's a payscale, which I think there will be.

No, they are talking about trading back to say 5-10 range in the first round and picking up additional picks as compensation. Then, take a QB with our first pick...jsu tnot the first overall pick (especially when we don't pick again until the 3rd round).

I just don't think the Panthers can gamble with this pick, and taking any of the QB's #1 would be doing that. They have to take the player who will most likely translate to a successful NFL player. Not having a 2nd round pick makes this even more dire.

Gabbert is not worthy of a #1 overall. He threw for only 16tds in a conference that plays no defense. Mallett on the other hand dominated a NFL Talent loaded SEC.

Mallett would lead the league in interceptions thrown for years to come. Guy has a connon for an arm, but makes horrible decisions. He makes Cutler look consistent.

I'm actually quite surprised KT thinks we'll take Cam Newton since he spent the regular season posting how racist our FO & fanbase were and how little interest they had in a quarterback that wasn't white. Heh.

KT does not really want us to take Newton. If we did, he would have absolutely nothing left to post about.

Why wouldnt I want us to get better? We suck at QB. Why would I want people thinking the football team I root for are pussified inbred idiots who are scared of success and change? Do you think I like getting laughed at when I tell people who my NFL team is? Im going to give our FO the benefit of the doubt, they'll do the right thing, the smart thing. Regardless of people saying they have no clue what they are doing and saying they are in over their heads, I still have faith in our boys to get this thing right.

Hatter if we draft Newt, will you continue to pull for the Panthers?

8 of the last 10 #1 overall picks have been QB's. The two that weren't were drafted by the Texans and the Dolphins. The Texans had addressed QB in free agency that season by trading for Matt Schaub, thus drafting Mario Williams. The Dolphins drafted Jake Long but addressed QB in the second round drafting Chad Henne (could have drafted Matt Ryan or Flacco with #1 and look where Henne got them).

My point is that the worst team in the NFL always makes QB a #1 priority (Dolphins being an exception). Not that this always brings success, but the Panthers are a team that traditionally follows trends and do not often veer from what the rest of the NFL does. I expect them to select a QB #1 overall even though it may not look like a home run right now.

hell yeah I would, especially if he leads to wins.

if he sucks then i'll be pissed that we wasted the first overall pick on him.

The way I look at the whole draft this year is that we need a long term solution at QB. I am not on the clausen wagon (nor was I ever) and think that a real franchise QB needs to be found in the first round. The best way to draft the best QB in the draft is to have the first overall pick.

If we take a QB this year, it allows us to take a DT, most likely the top rated or second highest rated one, with our first pick in the early-mid first round (around 7-13 overall where our record would be 6-11. not too much of a stretch if you ask me.) of next year's draft.

Let our New franchise QB sit for a year behind a guy like Bulger or Volek so he can learn the intricacies of the game, and then send him out the next year to beast up the league with a new stud DT on the other side of the ball. it would be super awesome if we even took a DT with our third round pick this year (maybe jurrell Casey? great against the run) and he turned out great as well, or picked up a decent DT in FA when the new CBA is signed.

of course you could go DT first this year and hope that a QB falls to us where we pick next year, but that will just add another year of waiting as we develop our QB.

truth be told, we be focked either way.

Two quick rebuttals.

Raging Bull you question the drafting of the J Stew. Really? You characterize Jon as just a guy that gets rushing yards and plays half the snaps. Dude reality check. As bad as our QB situation is there are more teams that wish they had ONE of our backs. 1000 yrds rushing is not easy in the NFL. Has Flacco won the Ravens anything yet?

Secondly, i see although the wheels have fallen off the LUCK BANDWAGON Cracka McNasty is still thinking a rookie QB is the answer. I get it you hate Pickles. I am not a fan either but i am realistic. Fox and crew were lame ducks and decided to baptize Jimmy in the fire of the regular season. Amid all this chaos we expected the kid to come in and light it up? Not gonna happen. The Panthers sucked this year. But to scapegoat the rookie QB is not fair. With proper teaching and coaching and some much needed time on the BENCH we could have a long term answer at QB with Pickles. We need a legit QB to start next year. We do agree on that. But i think adding someone like Bulger or Volek would make us the laughingstock of the NFL. Those guys are backups at this point in their careers at BEST. I am the lone rider on the Alex Smith in FA Bandwagon i guess. The vision is add A. Smith, Marcedes Lewis and AJ Green. Then a CB and DT in the third along with one FA mid to high tier DT. Use money from losing TD, Smitty, and Dwill to resign Kalil, Anderson, CJ, Dante, and extend Beason.

Lastly, there is no such thing as a rational conclusion when you are talking about drafting a QB this year with our first.

1. Gabbert is FAT and inaccurate.

2. Cam is a college golden boy ala The Golden Calf of Bristol, Leinart, and Vince Young. College success at QB does not guarantee NFL success.

3. Colin Kaepernick would make a cool project. BUT he is a 2-3 year project.

4. Locker is showed signs of cracking under the pressure of being merely considered the best QB in the class.

5. Mallett is dumb and has a long funky release.

There's your rational reasons why QB is a no go all you instant gratification goobers.

What we disagree on is that jimmy is actually worth a damn. i am not scapegoating him, I never liked him, and don't think he will amount to anything in the NFL. even if he had a shot at being any good, I think he is probably broken beyond repair thanks to what happened last year.

Signing Bulger or Volek will not make us the laughing stock of the league. the cards signed kurt warner when he was "over the hill" worked out ok for them. i mean they didn't develop anyone behind him and that i do understand that that is a best case scenario, but taking a flier on a stop gap vet QB is a reasonable thing to do when you draft a QB you want for the future.

Where is this Gabbert is fat notion coming from? I agree with your other QB assessments, but where did you get he was the next jawalrus from?

If there was a smiley icon throwing credibility out the window, i would have posted right after you bash Cam Newton and say Kaepernick would make a "cool project" comment.

    • Too late to edit above but the quote is from this Diane Russini article in the Athletic: https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/5941684/2024/11/23/russinis-what-im-hearing-the-day-the-jets-fell-apart-and-the-broncos-rallied-belichick-best-fits/ Okay.. there you have sorry I left that out the first post.  Also waivers keep the contract intact. That is the major difference in released and waived. It's all in that link from the other post.
    • Okay so I am reading something in The Athletic and it says that Jones had to pass through waivers. So I don't know. I looked this stuff up when we were number one there all offseason and I thought it said 4 years in the league got you vested, as they call it.  Vested gets you out of waivers as I understood it. I probably got something wrong, but when I think about the slack quality of journalism these days I wonder about that. So I went and looked, again. Well, well.  For everyone: "When a player has accrued at least four seasons in the NFL, they are considered a vested veteran. When these vested veterans get cut, they are released and their contract is terminated. When a vested veteran is released, they are an unrestricted free agent that can sign with any NFL team, and the team that released them doesn’t need to provide any additional compensation." It runs it all down here, where the quotes came from: https://www.profootballnetwork.com/waived-vs-released-nfl/ As far as Jones, the team turned down his 5th year option so I knew that meant he had 4 years in, because they re-signed him anyway, after turning down the much cheaper extra year.  The Athletic is owned by the New York Times so I shouldn't be surprised. That paper was an institution once upon a time but they let their standards go.
