clausen still part of "long term plan"...wait what?

Recommended Posts

Of course he is part of the long-term plan, he is signed for 4 years. And if we take Fairley in the first it would make sense that we won't be looking for someone at QB in the third round or lower unless a first round talent falls like Clausen did this year.

I would be fine with picking up a veteran or two to come in and compete to start. If we don't go QB in the first, we may not go that way at all. I just hope we can get the guy we want in free agency or a trade.

ugh. too much volek talk.

why is he in san diego? why isn't he starting somewhere?

he was in with the titans and had a shot to take the starting gig when mcnair left. he wasn't putting forth the effort or the work needed to take the starting job, mainly he thought he inherited it instead of earned it. coaching staff wasn't thrilled so they brought in weak competition that he could easily beat out...kerry collins. volek got pissed that he actually had to compete for the job and whined and asked to be traded rather than have to compete for the job. titans traded him away for a pack of bubble gum (otherwise known as a 6th round pick). he has been content to be a backup in san diego.

all of you guys that look at him see some guy that started 10 games SIX YEARS AGO and had two decent ones out of them winning a whopping 3. you see some old vet who supposedly knows the system that is getting brought in. he's a vet and he has experience (barely) so that automatically means he'd be good for the young guys to learn behind. meh. what's he going to teach them? do we actually want our QBs learning from a bum like that? aren't intangibles important?

more than that...would he actually want to come out here? he's content to stay out in san diego as a backup. think about that...content to be a backup. norv wants him to stay out there and said he wants to keep him as a backup for rivers. why would he want to come here and move his family for a job that will most likely only last a year before he's right back to the same thing he was. he would come out here and compete for the job. what has happened when he was told he had to compete? he ran away. only reason he would bother coming out here was if he was handed the job and there is no way that guy should be handed the job.

why not try to go out and find someone who has some real experience as a starter? why not go out and try to find someone who at least has potential to be something more than a one year stop gap?

oh...and just in case someone wants to know who i think would be better than volek, here's what i've said in a couple other threads and all of these guys would be better choices than volek.

for competition: gradkowski, tarvaris jackson, grossman, thigpen, moore, alex smith, maybe derek anderson

carrying the clipboard: pennington, bulger, josh mccown, seneca wallace

all that said...forget it. you guys want to go back to fox's way of just getting some old QB to plug in because it really isn't important anyways or if you want to stick with his "just good enough" method, fine. i'm done. i just hope that the new regime isn't that pathetic. it should like they are a group of coaches that actually like to take risks rather than go the safe and old route.

at any rate...i'm done talking about volek.

None of those guys would be anything more than a stop gap.

Are you really expecting any of those guys to turn into franchise QB options?? If not, you're just proposing another stopgap, same as Volek. I kinda see a lot of those guys as journeyman stopgaps, just with varying amounts of experience and previous potential. There are exceptions, of course.

Alex Smith could btw, and I like him a lot, but I don't see him coming here.

Derek Anderson is a realistic option here but I honestly don't see him as more than a stopgap, either.

Moore is something of a discussion for another day but I do like him so yeah. :P

There's no doubt that Clausen hasn't shown much, but unlike many of those guys, he's still young enough that he could.

Honestly if our only chances were rookie QBs and Clausen, meaning no FA in the mix, I would stick with Clausen versus anyone else in that draft.

Not because I think Clausen is better than some of the prospects, but because I don't think the prospects are that much better either, and wasting another draft pick for another project like Clausen is just pointless.

Might as well stick with what we got.

But I still say no way we start the season with Clausen and Pike. We either re-sign Moore or get a FA.

imo, there is 0% chance that Rivera goes into next season w/ the same QBs Fox had last year. A lot was forced on Fox for various reasons.......Rivera is gonna get a chance to build a football team. No reason to believe that trio is good enough to compete in 2010. Clausen stays.....but I doubt Pike can stay on the active roster. Rivera is gonna bring in some bodies........Clausen needs to improve rapidly. If he shows no improvement in camp then he might not be here for 2011.

heading into next season, Clausen and Pike are projects to variosu degrees. Nothing wrong w/ that. Neither should have seen the field last year.....I just doubt Rivera keeps two projects on the actual roster. This will be a new season......and not a lame duck HC.
