Is there a chance we draft a QB after the first round?

I really, really have started to like Ricky Stanzi out of Iowa this week. Tall, strong, QB witha quick high release, I think he'd be a good pick in the middle rounds. Im about to meet him here in a few minutes too so Ill be able to tell you if he's a douche or not. Met Kaepernick a few minutes ago and he was a funny, classy, polite guy. Word on the street is that the Phins are really digging him though.

We could wait for 4 years before drafting a franchise QB and the liklihood for a bust would be around 50%. Time on the pine is the best way to bring along a QB, so we need to draft Volek's replacement NOW. Is CLausen that guy? maybe after a year or two on the bench. Pike? I dunno. Can we find a better athlete with smarts and measureables who needs some work under the hood? Sure.

Since se don't have a Brady or Manning under center, not even a Josh Freeman or Phillip Rivers, we can use time and careful, patient development to prep a QB before we are desperate like we are now. Kaepernick is physically superior to nearly every QB in the NFL--he is just raw. In two years, he would not be. As important as QB is in this league, I do not see how you can be happy with Volek, Clausen, and Pike when better athletes with stronger arms are out there.

i don't see how you can be happy with the idea of volek under center period.

try thinking outside of that scrub box.

I am not happy at all with that. I just don't think we have a lot of options. That is why I am trying to start developing talent--so we never find ourselves in this mess again.

Lets bring in about 10 QB's thru the 1st 5 picks in the draft, FA's, Undrafted FA's.

Have them all battle it out like survivor, cutting one or two a week. HBO Hard Knocks would be here for sure,

Last man standing is the starter. At least we would be news worthy then.

This far enough out of the scrub box for ya! :D

your point

find one single exception and think it refutes my entire argument

So, you think there is only 1 exception? Really? I thought one point would be enough. I should not have to provide you with an exhaustive list. You are not interested in facts anyway. Pointless sarcasm seems to be your thing.

By the way, you did not have an argument.

Matt Schaub, third round

In fairness, a lot of folks felt the same way about Rodney Peete. He exceeded a lot of people's expectations as a starter.

As a one year stopgap, given that he's familiar with Chudzinski, I could live with it.

why would we waste time on a QB with NO FUTURE? there are much younger prospects out there who can actually compete for the job who have as much or more talent and with a lot more long term potential than some old career backup.

if we go volek or some other old guy we are only spending our wheels. take a risk on a couple younger FA vets that are available and see if they have any potential. let them compete with clausen for the job. if none of them pan out and we suck again next year, then try to draft someone.

so many people say that grooming a QB and letting him sit for a couple years is the best way, but that isn't true anymore. get them in the game and let them learn when it matters. screw getting a old vet and get some decent coaches who have a clue.

if they do insist on getting an old vet, at least let it be someone who has had serious experience as a starter and not some guy who started a few games years ago and had to whine his way out of a situation when his team actually wanted him to compete for the job.

i just really hate the stop gap solution. it gets you no nearer to finding your franchise QB.

we could be working with younger vet FAs who actually have a chance to compete for the long term job. if your going to bring in someone, let it be someone that actually has a chance to be the franchise QB.

all a stop gap does is give you time to try and develop some guy on your roster that you still will never know if they are worthy of the starting gig until they get in there and play. it's just spinning your wheels.

Matt Schaub, third round, Atlanta. Developed on bench. A good QB on a bad team.

hmmmm

this post makes me want to draft stanzi and then take the best QB with the 2nd overall pick a few years later

I'm not the world's biggest fan of it myself.

But truthfully, there just isn't anybody I see being a franchise QB available via draft, free agency, or reasonable trade.

Somebody might throw Carson Palmer's name in, but I wouldn't want him as anything but a stopgap either.

It really is just a lousy year to need a quarterback :(

MHS is right about Kaepernick, the kid has plenty of raw talent.

Agreed, but he too is a project.

If our circumstances were different, I could probably get on board with drafting just about any of these guys as a potential future prospect.

But that's just not a luxury we have right now :(
