Is there a chance we draft a QB after the first round?

Much could change, but a QB in the third, in addition to a veteran like Volek, is the only way I feel secure about the position. If Clausen is a bust, and Pike could not beat him out, what exactly do we have at the position? Sure, Clausen needs time, but that does not always equate to success.

Imagine this: Draft a tall, strong-armed QB in the third round who could develop and legitimately compete with Clausen-for the backup QB job. Colin Kaepernick out of Nevada is my first choice. Pat Devlin is my next pick. Heck, Mallett could drop to the 65th pick.

Then sign a Billy Volek to play QB for a year or two.

If Pike doesn't beat out Clausen, send him to the PS. Then you have Volek, Clausen, and a rookie like Kaepernik (6'6" tall, Strong arm, 4.45 speed; has some mechanical problems and needs to learn the pro set). Develop the talent while Volek drives the ship.

You could add Matt Moore and forget the draft pick, but I am looking upside. This pick is not for 2011 but for 2013, when Volek retires.

I know you hate to lose the pick now, but we have a bunch of cash for free agents.

Is there a chance it could happen? yes.

Me? I don't want any of 'em. Don't care what round.

No franchise QBs in the draft with Luck gone. And what's the point of drafting projects when we already have two of those on roster?

I just don't like the projects we have. Pike should have beat out Clausen the way he played.

No.

Compelling, but are you assuming that Rivera likes the QB situation as depth? He thinks they are the future? As soon as you sign a 35 year old starter, you better start grooming his replacement-

I don't think he likes Clausen, at all.

maybe one in the 4th or 5th round to knock bean pole of the team, but i would much rather go out and find a YOUNG (not VY) vet or two to come in and actually compete for the job. much better than getting some old hack in with no future.

again..going after some old QB in his 30s is a piss poor plan because it doesn't get you any closer to finding your long term QB. only FAs that should be brought in are ones that could have a future and who can compete for the real job.

old guys, esp. career scrubs like volek have no future in this league and will only delay our search for getting a franchise guy in here (or delay our finding out that neither pike or clausen are the answer long term).

We could wait for 4 years before drafting a franchise QB and the liklihood for a bust would be around 50%. Time on the pine is the best way to bring along a QB, so we need to draft Volek's replacement NOW. Is CLausen that guy? maybe after a year or two on the bench. Pike? I dunno. Can we find a better athlete with smarts and measureables who needs some work under the hood? Sure.

Since se don't have a Brady or Manning under center, not even a Josh Freeman or Phillip Rivers, we can use time and careful, patient development to prep a QB before we are desperate like we are now. Kaepernick is physically superior to nearly every QB in the NFL--he is just raw. In two years, he would not be. As important as QB is in this league, I do not see how you can be happy with Volek, Clausen, and Pike when better athletes with stronger arms are out there.

I don't like limiting the evaluation of the prospects we have to their performance under John Fox, Rip Scherer and Jeff Davidson.

yes. that is the variable that pisses me off. This staff is supposed to be geared toward teaching, so we shall see. Scherer was allowed to exist because his OC and head coach had no clue either.

    • After the Chiefs game a 6'5 X would really help in the Red zone. I would also love to add Slayton in FA
    • But again, you can restock a defense through free agency much easier than offensive skill positions. Spend all our cap space on defense, take a true elite prospect who also happens to fit a position of need in T-Mac, and then use the rest of our picks on defense. Again, every season there’s a smattering of great DL, LB, and DB options in free agency, a Top 10 WR never hits free agency, ever.  The only way you get one is through the draft or giving up 1st round picks in a trade for one. If he’s there when we’re on the clock, he has to be the pick, he’s just that good.
    • It must be an early Christmas for JT O'Sullivan having Thielen back so he could put a coal in Thielen's stocking every chance he gets.  Honestly, the biggest surprise is not so much the anticipation. There were those moments here and there last year as well. It's that even that one positive quality he had seemingly vanished his first two games to where it looked like it was all but over, only for it to start coming back some until you get exclamation points all over this game film. And some of those throws were under a lot of duress, something I feel is something new. Finally, those deeper shots are starting to land. Not all of them, but enough that defenses may have to start respecting them. No guarantees whether this will end up as more of anomaly but I certainly hope it isn't. The Green Bay game was a sampler of what BY could be. Against KC, we got a meal. If we could start getting these meals regularly, we might actually have something to work with here.
