What will the payroll be in 2011?

I think the largest portion of the spare money this year goes toward:

- Deangelo

- CJ

- Kalil

- Anderson

- Davis

- maybe Marshall

- Beason (I don't think they'll let him get to a contract year)

- FA QB

- FA DT x2

That's a lotta money spent right there. Should take us close enough for draft picks to finish off most of the unspent budget.

I tried to do a quick google search and didn't really find anything quickly.

You could be completely correct. I always thought that when teams were reported to be that far under the cap it was at the begining of the offseason and thus the reason they had to spend a certain amount of money.

Still going to be a lot of money to spend and it all shouldn't go to Anderson and Rosario, or even DeAngelo Williams. I just really hope Hurney is smart enough (I think he is) and able to work with Rivera (not sure) to build a championship team. There will never be another time greater than now to be in a rebuilding process and the Panthers have set themselves up to completely take advantage of the situation. They just have to come through.

yeah, I'm hoping they make a nice splash in FA.. there is a lot of good that can be done there..

and we still need to stay well under the cap.. it's not smart to toe the line... if we could sign all of those and stay 20mil under the cap, I'll be happy..

No, smart teams know when to move on. Too much money when Stewart is still under a rookie contract. If, and this is a big if, Deangelo were to agree to a deal for about $3 million a season, fine. But that's not going to happen so the best option is to pass.

- CJ

CJ should be resign but there is the chance that another team will be willing to give him a huge payday. Sign him, but don't overpay for a guy who is good but not great.

- Kalil

No question. Pay the man. If you think he's over-rated that your opionion but the rest of the NFL sees him as a Pro-Bowler....and he is.

- Anderson

Anderson is like CJ but not as important. He's good but not as important as extending Beason. Another team will over pay for him so I don't see him staying around.

- Davis

No. Have we not learned our lessons from Dan Morgan?

- maybe Marshall

Again, no. He will be way over paid on the open market and we need better.

- Beason (I don't think they'll let him get to a contract year)

Apart from re-signing Kalil, this is the most important task once the offseason starts.

So what you are saying is that the Panthers re-sign the players you mentioned above and then draft and thats it? And that will turn a 2-14 team into what?

I really think a lot of fans are delusional if they think that a starting QB and 2 starting DTs (like it's really easy to find quality starting QB and DT) and a new coaching staff is all the changes needed on this team. There's a fear with most fans of rebuilding and they are trying to convience themselves the Panthers don't have to rebuild and that it was all Fox or something. I just don't get it. 2-14 is a bad team. There are good parts but some of you are really streching on some of these.

Cap can be manipulated higher by front loading contracts and incentives likely to be earned and other things. But Tampa is always low on team salary. And that is a better estimate of what a team spends.

And the cap may not reflect how much a team spends up or down.

Signing bonuses are reflected in team salary in the year they are handed out so it very likely that if the Panthers sign most of their core group they could hand out close to 100 million in signing money or at least guaranteed money. They could backload some of the guaranteed money to roster bonuses or incentives likely to be earned. So it is possible we will be below the cap but spend quite a bit in terms of team salary. IN 2012 it would go down since we wouldn't have so many people to sign compared to 2011.

If we let Deangelo, CJ, Anderson, Marshall and Davis (even though he didn't do anything this year) go like you implied could happen, we'll be a lot worse than we were this past year no matter who we draft or sign...especially Deangelo.

Because....

I really want someone to explain to me how it was stupid for Fox to return 21 of 22 starters on a team that went 7-9 in 2006 but returning 18 of 22 starters from a team that went 2-14 is a great idea.

I'm waiting...

the Bucs were about 40mil below the cap for a while... pretty sure it was more than 10... I'm not sure the exact #'s...

na, bucs were always at the salary floor but the other poster is right, the salary floor was REALLY close to the cap, like he said about 10 mill. its so drastically low now because they got rid of all their expensive players remember?

because qb play, defensive tackle play, wide receiver and tight end play were are worst areas outside of injuries to our offensive line?

So lets get this straight:

- DeAngelo

Franchise tag. Period. we will get compensation for him and the franchise tag won't cost that much anyways because running backs don't make that much. He was a first round draft pick.

- CJ

He will be paid handsomely, he has NOT been a surprise this year, NFL personal already knew he was a beast going into the season, he only confirmed it.

- Kalil

Will be the highest paid center in the league. Because if we don't make him into it, another team will and he deserves it.

- Anderson

Don't feel like digging for a salary number on other middle of the road, role-playing Linebackers so I'll just say his salary will be that of a middle of the road, role-playing linebacker.

- Davis

Nothing complicated here, again, his contract will be structured so that he gets money for games played, pro-bowls, tackles, tackles for loss, sacks, forced fumbles, and fumble recoveries. He will get about half as much as Beason in guaranteed money, however, the money he gets for achieving these escalators will bring his contract to about 80 - 85% of Beason's contract.

- Marshall

He is gone. Team has essentially confirmed this with his agent.

- Beason

Obviously he won't make it to a contract year, he embodies the Panthers and is basically the only leader on defense. Think "The Ray Lewis Ravens Defense" when you think "The Jon Beason Panthers Defense". Will likely get about a million more than Willis just to show Willis up.

- Godfrey

Only Ed Reed and Troy Polamalu had more interceptions. Why would you let him leave? Who cares if he is a liability in coverage if he makes turnovers and gets you national attention? He got us in position to win a lot more games this year in opposing territory that our offense couldn't capitalize on.

- Billy Volek or McNabb

A veteran that knows Chudzinski's offense, look for someone like a McNabb as a possibility as well.

- Champ Baily or Nnamdi Asomugha

Both veteran stop gaps able to come in and solidify our cornerback position for three to four seasons while we groom a rookie cornerback we pick up in next year or 2013 draft.

    • i'm a fan of Leon Bridges anyways, but this song i can't get enough of. nice groove.
    • Yeah we're hoping for a lot to go our way in the draft as far as runs on certain positions after we select and how the board falls prior to our 1st selection. I think it will be really hard if we take TMAC, but i don't see a realistic way of getting a WR1 other than drafting TMAC. Its rough. But this is the situation we find ourselves in after years of bad drafting, bad trades, and poor cap management. IF we take TMAC we gotta hope and pray a run on DL doesn't happen tail end of first/beginning of 2nd. Tough situation, but im excited to see how we address this off-season.
    • Sometimes people say things during this time of year to keep from tipping their hands, but I believe Morgan.  As I look at the offseason in terms of free agency and the draft, I see any path to acquiring an elite WR as either expensive or awkward.  In the draft, taking a WR on days 1 and 2 means you may be overlooking the boatload of talent in areas of need---like edge and DE/DT.  There will be good edge / DL players coming off the board in early round 3, in my view.  We will probably sign a free agent or two, but that means we may still need to draft a NT, DE, and an Edge player--and from what I can tell, these are your best players if the draft goes like I think it will.  If TMac is there, I think you have to take him, but it makes filling the needs at DL, Edge, S, etc. much more difficult. Morgan has a very tough job if you consider the long term--he needs to think about the Bryce contract in two years and not back load or extend too many contracts.  Winning in the NFL is more about math than anyone realizes.  Morgan wants "dawgs" and this draft has them.
