Cam Newton Public Workout

It might not make a difference to you but Cam Newton is actually bigger than any linebacker we have on out roster right now. You guys act like he is a lightweight fighting against super heavyweights.

I know he won't be able to run 20.31 times a game in the NFL, but don't think for a second you wouldn't see an immediate improvement on 3rd and 1 or 3rd and 2, or our efficiency inside the five yard line in the red zone.

When you have a guy 6'6 250 pounds I don't think that linebackers that are actually smaller than him are just going to destroy him just because the are NFL linebackers. If they can even catch him.

They caught Dante Culpepper and Mcnabb and VY and Vick and Steve Young. No matter how big and fast you are their is always somebody bigger and faster.

teeray... since you seem new here, let me update you.

See... we've had this discussion with "The Real Deal" already. It was fruitless because we can post all the facts in the world, list all the stats you want, he's going to say Newton is immature, or is inaccurate, or has footwork problems. He's a Newton hater you see. Why? I don't know. Someone speculated that he's in love with Matt Moore. Dunno.

Even though the Pac10 had SOS of 8 of the top 10 and all 10 were in the top 20. No other conference even comes close.

SEC fans need to get real for a minute.

Aaaah the Pac-10. That is the conference that kept getting thumped by the WAC. Any conference that has a team that lets Nevada put up 50+ points on your team loses a lot of cred.

SOS is screwy anyway. If you end up in an overrated conference you pad the SOS by playing each other. Happens with the RPI in college basketball all the time.

i was on his bandwagon before most.

football IQ is off the charts. his ability to read defenses is far more advanced than most coming out of college. his poise in the pocket and decision making abilities under pressure are amazing. he ran that offense using a playbook with 350 plays that he had command over. he is very coachable and has pretty close to a photographic memory. he is known for being a great leader and has all the intagibles teams look for in a franchise QB. he has an incredible ability to extend plays, waiting downfield for things to develop and he worked through progressions quickly. when things broke down for receivers, he could take off running and pick up quite a few yards. he's a tough runner for a QB and a lot faster than you would expect. his technique is sound and it's very hard to find any flaws in his play. only criticisms that were found had to do with an awkward release that he has from time to time and some criticized his competition.

ok. so if this is the case who was the next qb most ranked after him before he decided to not to come out?

it is just weird that after andrew luck decided to go back to school, all other qbs in this draft all of a sudden just sucked. if we were going to pick a qb with our 1st pick , because we saw it as a need, why, even if our top qb pick doesnt declare, would we still not look at qb in the first round?

Luck also had some very quiet criticism that he only rarely was pressured, because he had one hell of an O-Line.

Luck looked like Jake Delhomme the first time VT got pressure in his face. He threw it right to that VT CB from like 4yds away and it was pure luck (pun intended) that it wasn't a pick 6.

Luck is nowhere close to being perfect, and he could very well have a bad season in 2011 for all we know. I watched two of his games and almost every throw I saw was to a wide open receiver, which is one of the things people are criticizing Cam Newton for.

That's what you are missing about everything. That doesn't make me a hater. That makes me the same as his coach that is getting paid to fix those issues. You not acknowledging those issues makes you a homer.

Luck was rated as a once in a decade type talent and not just by 1 or 2 or 3 scouting services. All scouting media had him as the best thing since slice bread. Without him the rest of the draft looks like the David carr and Joey harrington draft. Or the Alex smith draft where the best qb prospects have alot of ?

We didn't see getting a QB of the future as a need. We didn't see getting a project QB as a need. We saw getting a very advanced, polished player that could contribute right away at the QB position as a need.

No one fits that need anymore. Time to move on to another need.

And there it is...

What you see as "issues" I see as some over-hyped BS to down the guy for whatever reason.

After 4 days, when an outside contractor who coaches pro QBs comes in and says he's "blown away" by footwork of the kid, there's obviously something inconsistent between what he sees and what you, and others "see".

WOW I agree with TRD on this one.

Gotcha. It is hard to read through 54 pages of this stuff. Some people just act like the kid is garbage. Can I guarantee that he will be a successful pro? No but I can say the same thing about every single player in this draft.

Real Deal also doesn't want to talk about how much he actually improved as the year went on and the second half of the season he was actually at times a better passer than a runner.

Like his last six games when he ran only 16.17 times a game and 90% of those were designed runs not one read and run scenarios.

He also threw for 248 yards per game and threw 17 touchdowns and only 2 int's.

That to me is a direct reflection the kind of hard work this guy puts in because he was the best player in the NCAA at the beginning of the year and was even better by the end of it.

But hey whatever.

The gap between Luck and everyone else was pretty big.

I said well before Luck's announcement, and prior to the Bowl games, that if Luck didn't come out I didn't want anyone else. And I still say that.

It's not just Newton. I don't want any QB in any round. Youth we've got at that spot. It doesn't need to get even younger.

We've already got two young projects/prospects. We don't need another. Sign a couple of veteran options, take four to camp and the best three into the season.
