Cam Newton Public Workout

Checked it out. The NFL doesn't allow scouts to go to workouts other than the combine and pro days.

The rationale is that they want to see players working out under similar conditions. What they don't want is players having private workouts set up with favorable conditions that can make them look better than they otherwise might.

(essentially, the rules are meant to discourage what Cecil Newton is doing)

yeah that makes sense, but I'm sure the Newtons know as much as we do scouts will get the footage.

I guarantee you that this thing will be shown on ESPN and the NFL Network about 40 times and there will probably be copies of all the footage sent to any NFL team within shouting distance of a first round pick.

There have been workouts where cameras weren't present, but those are the private workouts that they sometimes do for a specific team.

Seen it done with NBA player quite frequently, which is why I wondered about it. But you're right, it is unlikely to happen.

Just not sure what the purpose of it is... He's not going to get drafted before the Combine.

EDIT: Actually, on second thought, maybe it's just to get more film of him out there. He's only played a year at Auburn and the film on his footwork etc is quite sparse. Perhaps the goal here is just to emphasize that aspect of his game more and get more footage out so that there is just that much more information after the Combine about him.

I can't actually think of a player in recent history who's held his own private workout at all.

The majority of them work out either at the Scouting Combine or at their school's pro day because that's where the NFL scouts are. And that's what they want, to impress the pro scouts.

And again, NFL teams want to control the conditions so no one can inflate their numbers. Heck, from what I understand, pro day workouts tend to be run by the scouts rather than school officials. The NFL is very big on control.

Any way you slice it, this is not a big deal. I'm sure some media blow hards will try to make it one though, because that's just what they do. You can't get people stirred up on talk radio and message boards by reporting the boring truth and nothing but the boring truth.

Cecil Newton is scheduling his son, Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Cam Newton, to have a workout in front of the media in San Diego on Feb. 10, his quarterback coach George Whitfield told ESPN.

The Auburn quarterback arrived in San Diego over the weekend and finished his fourth day of working with Whitfield on Thursday. Much of the emphasis has been on getting Newton, who had played primarily out of the shotgun formation in a spread offense in college, acclimated to working from under center and throwing in rhythm while improving his footwork. The results have "blown away" Whitfield, as well as the elder Newton.

"Cam is ready arm-wise and footwork-wise," Whitfield said Thursday night. "We've had a heckuva of regimen, but he has really made some giant strides in getting this routine from under center down. His dad is seeing that, and saying let's go public before the [NFL] Combine."

Whitfield, who last year worked with Ben Roethlisberger while the Steelers quarterback was suspended by the NFL, said the Feb. 10 workout, tentatively scheduled for Cathedral High School, will last between an hour and 90 minutes. "He'll do a lot of drops, a lot of perimeter throws, a lot of things from in the pocket -sliding and moving from pressure and a lot of things in rhythm and taking some snaps from under center, where he'll take the five and seven [-step drops.]"

In addition to working with Whitfield, Newton also has trained with a speed coach and a trainer in San Diego. "He weighed in at 250 with six percent body fat," said Whitfield. "Cam's been game for everything we've thrown at him. I'm amazed at some of the things he can do athletically."

Newton's footwork is pro-ready. He knows that, his father knows that, and Whitfield knows that. They also know that Cam has been on the receiving end of some undue criticism and they are staging this workout to show the haters up.

OK, and how does that make Cecil Newton and Cam Newton bad people? How is it a red flag on his character? How is this hurting anybody in any way whatsoever?

It's a freakin workout. There will be cameras. The scouts will see the footage.

There is simply nothing bad about this at all.

I asked a handful of scouts about this workout. All were mystified as to what gains could be made with what one front office executive termed a "publicity stunt."

One high level scout put it this way:

"The Newtons would be best to realize they aren't in college anymore. Regardless of how good he looks for [the media], there isn't going to be a bidding war for him. We're not recruiting him. They could wind up turning more people against them than for them with this [workout]."

The article states that they have made some "giant strides" when it comes to footwork and his arm. If they made "giant strides" and he just not thinks his footwork is ready, wouldn't that mean that the "haters" who said he needed to work on his footwork because it was bad were correct and weren't necessarily haters but just better observers than you? They weren't homers and saw a flaw he needed to fix and he's working on it. That doesn't make them haters it makes them real.

Also, this guy also worked with Cantwell and he had some of the most God awful footwork in football so I don't know how good he or Cecil are at judging NFL footwork.

So am I supposed to believe that these scouts will pass on Cam just because his dad is scheduling a workout? If that's the case then they suck as scouts and you shouldn't take anything they say seriously.
