Realistically, we have no idea what he can and can't do at the NFL level. Outrunning college guys isn't the same as outrunning pros.

Some team that can afford to take the time he needs will find out. I seriously doubt it'll be us.

Realistically, we have no idea what Andrew Luck can do at the NFL level either, but everybody wanted to draft him before any team even interviewed him in person or watched him play in person.

Edit...Actually, I should have posted that everybody wanted to draft Luck before 95% of our fanbase had ever even seen him play a game. With Cam, everbody wants more and more proof though.

Because the sentiment you and some others displayed in this thread is prevelant in any thread discussing a black QB in this board. The character attacks, the negative potrayals. Black QBs bring an ugliness out of some people that we see over and over and over whenever one is suggested to this fanbase.

I would love to sign Cam Newton #1 and sign FA Vince Young and trade Clausen for McNabb. We could cut Pike, then according to you we will win Super Bowls for the nest 15 years. I don't have a problem with any of that.

Monopolizing all that talent on one team would be a terrible, terrible tragedy for the rest of the league and is just something Mr. Richardson wouldn't dare do to other owners!

Akili Smith had size and speed too. So did Ryan Leaf and Matt Jones. It's not enough by itself.

As far as the difference it makes, unless you want to throw Newton into the fire right away or put Clausen in the starter/mentor role, somebody has to start this season.

A one-two depth chart of Clausen/Newton or vice-versa is a question mark backed up by a question mark, and that's an awful idea.

If we sign a decent free agent QB, then why on earth would you also use your top pick on the same position (especially the #1 overall)?

Unless Jon Gruden is your head coach, that makes no sense at all. It's not like this is our only need.

We already have a project QB. If we sign a FA, then it's Clausen's year to sin the job or not.

The fact is that no player of need in this draft will be an intimidate impact. This years FA class will plug many holes that were glaring last year. If Marshall leaves then we have at least 3 top level CBs that can come in this year. The DT class this year is very good and while I know its a long shot to get someone like Ngata there is still a lot of very solid players. The only thing not in FA this year is a Fran QB. Thats why we may need to look to the draft for one.

At this point we are all guessing. Its will get more fun or the picture will be more clear when the combine happens and the wonderlic's come out. I remember when people were saying it was stupid for us not to pick Lindel White.

That's what people throw around. And to be frank, the whole notion is just flat out stupid. Honestly, it's as ignorant as anything I've ever seen on here.

There's no quarterback I want in this draft at all. None. Don't care what color they are. If our circumstances were different, I'd have no problem taking a project guy, but our circumstances this year just don't put us in the right situation.

Being drafted top 10 and be drafted #1 are different things entirely. IMO taking Newton #1 is a reach, whereas a team like SF taking him #7 is a good pickup. If we could trade down and get a 3rd or lord willing our 2nd back, I'd be pumped to take Newton. Who knows, maybe he'll blow me away at the combine and I'll be singing a different tune, but for now this is where my head is at.

The problem is that trading down is most likely pure fantasy, so you either get your QB at #1, or you hope like hell that Clausen gets a lot better and we're not having this same debate next year.

As far as this "reach" business...it's all irrelevant if you believe that the player you "reached for" is going to help you for the next 10 years, which BTW is probably about how long we would have to wait for another QB with Cam's potential to come along.

Well first of all, Cam is not a nutjob like Vince is. Secondly, he has already proven that he can handle controversy and adversity, and that he won't run and hide when things get tough. Lastly, Cam is smarter than Vince Young as well as being bigger and stronger. This dude is 250lbs with 6% body fat, so he could most likely play at 260 or so and not lose any speed or quickness.

cam newton is a reach at #1. end of story. his skillset isn't good enough to be a #1 overall pick. he's got the exact same things going for him that jason campbell had going for him when he came into the nfl. so why select someone at #1 that will likely be there at #15? that doesn't have any common sense to it at all.
