Cam Newton Public Workout

strangely enough many loved him with Jake Delhomme taking us to the Superbowl.

Are you telling me if Rivera got Billy Volek or someone else to take us to the Superbowl people would really care that much if we didn't have Cam Newton? Rivera seems intent on being there regularly so I hope he makes it. He knows the value of a franchise QB, so I expect him to be always on the look out for one.

We'll see.

Are you telling me that you actually believe we have a chance in hell of going to a Super Bowl with Billy Volek, or "someone else" (AKA another mediocre vet or JC)? Because that's pretty funny.

I still want a FA QB no matter if we get a Rookie or not. I dont think any rookie is ready for the NFL day one and def not in this draft. I still like the upside of Newton more then I do Clausen though. I think Clausen's struggles will just be compounded this year by having to learn a new system. He was in the best situation last year by playing a almost exact copy of what he did in ND. I just think Newton would be better in a vertical attack offense more then Clausen who's skill sets really reminds me of a WCO guy.

Well if the rookie is not ready, then sit him on the bench and let JC try to prove himself while the rookie is learning the ropes. This notion that you shouldn't draft a QB in the top 5 unless he can start right away is ludicrous anyway. That kind of thinking is why teams end up with the David Carr's of the world who leave them wondering why they invested $40 million and then ruined him by playing him too early.

You can afford to draft a project in the top five if you have an established starter or at least a decent fallback plan.

We have neither.

Once again, what difference does it make if we have a decent veteran starter right now if we're going to have to replace him in a couple of years anyway? We could still sign one of those vets anytime in the future if Cam doesn't work out. I believe he will work out though, because you simply can't teach size and speed. There won't be another Cam Newton for probably 15 years, but there will be plenty of Clausens, Voleks, and Gabberts.

We can find a decent FA. Palmer sat his first year then came on strong. I think we might need to give a Rookie and yes Clausen that long as well. To be fair though the Bengals did have Kittna before they drafted Palmer though.

Akili Smith had size and speed too. So did Ryan Leaf and Matt Jones. It's not enough by itself.

As far as the difference it makes, unless you want to throw Newton into the fire right away or put Clausen in the starter/mentor role, somebody has to start this season.

A one-two depth chart of Clausen/Newton or vice-versa is a question mark backed up by a question mark, and that's an awful idea.

If we sign a decent free agent QB, then why on earth would you also use your top pick on the same position (especially the #1 overall)?

Unless Jon Gruden is your head coach, that makes no sense at all. It's not like this is our only need.

We already have a project QB. If we sign a FA, then it's Clausen's year to sin the job or not.

None of those guys could do what Cam can do.

Realistically, we have no idea what he can and can't do at the NFL level. Outrunning college guys isn't the same as outrunning pros.

Some team that can afford to take the time he needs will find out. I seriously doubt it'll be us.

I don't see how we can afford not to. Settling for average is getting really really old.

Anyway, how much do you want to bet that Cam Newton will get drafted in the top ten? It will either be us or somebody else...it might as well be us.

I would agree with Mr Scot that we won't draft Newton to be the immediate starter. He won't be able to come in and start this season. But if the plan all along is to trade or find a vet like Volek to come in and start, then you have the veteran mentor, immediate starter and you give Newton the time to learn and develop. Don't know if we will do it though and having a starter right now in house would maker it easier to pick up a guy like Newton with great potential. If we are going to pick up a QB in the first then Newton would still be my choice but it is far from a sure thing. Newton could certainly improve him his stock with a great workout or drop totally out of consideration with an average or poor performance.

the foot work argument is bs.for instance he dropped back in the national championship game. felt pressure to the left of him, and shaked the free defender off of him.stepped up in the pocket and made a nice catchable ball on the sideline for a td.since you want to break down plays trd break that one down.and he kept the safeties in the middle of the field.

like i said it's obvious people dont want this guy to be good because of 1 reason.(and when you get defensive and say not you, you are telling on yourself.)

Thats called circular logic. It goes around and around but doesn't get you to a conclusion.
