Cam Newton Public Workout

How much do you actually believe that an aging veteran is going to help us "this year"? 8-8 maybe? Is that your big goal, because that's about the only realistic goal you could possibly have for 2011, regardless of who we draft/sign to play QB?

I guarantee you that Cam could do that for us even while he's learning to play the position because he is capable of moving the chains in situations where those vets will be nothing but sack meat. Frankly, I'm sick and tired of watching Panthers QB's crumble like a freakin rag doll under pressure.

I guess it depends on whether you want to win long term, or a quick fix that will make your team decent. Me, I'm ready to go against everything John Fox would have done, and swing for the damn fences this time.

It amazes me that I'm getting so much sh*t for this after all the times I was accused of defending John Fox's conservative approach. Well I'm ready for agressive and very few people seem to be with me for some strange reason.

Do you think a rookie project is going to get us to the Super Bowl?

I don't expect any more from this season than I did John Fox's first year. That doesn't mean that I'd be willing to gum things up by sticking us with essentially two rookies as the top quarterback options.

Andrew Luck would have been worth that risk. Nobody else is, including Newton.

I didn't even know that about Cecil Newton. That's good for him, and he seems to know his poo and his son trusts him and that's great. And I'm not even getting into the whole race thing, but a lot of these young athletes never even had a father in their life, so it's good he does and that he is hands on. But to say Oliver Luck told Andrew that the Panthers weren't in his best interests long term when that has NEVER been suggested outside of the Carolina fanbase is a bit ludicrous I think.

It's not ludicrous. It's a lie. KT does that fairly often.

No, and that's my point. No QB, including Andrew Luck, is going to get us to the Super Bowl this year, so why not go ahead and get a guy who can be a star in the future? Who gives a crap if Joe Blow fan or some anynomous scout thinks it's a reach or not? What matters is that we build a consistent winner for the future and put some asses in the seats in the meantime.

Signing a vet to start this year will only prolong the process, because unless he somehow turns Jimmy Clausen in to a franchise QB between now and then, we will be having this same debate a year from now, except there is no guarantee we will have a high enough pick to get that franchise guy. Then what do we do?

Cam Newton has already been scrutinized more than any QB in the country, aside from The Golden Calf of Bristol, while he was still in college, so I'm guessing that he's ready for the challenge. I'm sure he will take about 5,000 snaps from center and practice all the drops and throws over and over again between now and draft day. From there, it's just a matter of learning an NFL offense, and there is only one way to do that.

Because they think they've already got a guy who might be a star in the future.

Doesn't matter what we think of Clausen. He is going to get the chance to prove himself whether we like it or not. They sign a vet just in case he doesn't.

Fans can bellyache all they want, but Clausen is getting another shot. If he fails, then all options are open next year.

I'm fine with giving Clausen another chance, but I would still have drafted Luck and I still want to draft Newton. Starting some veteran is not going to get us anywhere though. Either Clausen can do it or he can't...no veteran QB or QB coach is going to make any difference if he doesn't have it in him to begin with.

I would have drafted Luck. No one else.

No one knows whether Clausen "has it" or not, but they're going to put in the work to find out.

I want a franchise QB as much as anyone, but unless Clausen develops into one, we're not getting that this season.

As far as young QBs, 2011 is Clausen - maybe Pike - or bust. If it's bust, then we move on next season.

Doesn't matter if we like it or not.

It will damn sure matter if Cam Newton goes somewhere else and kicks ass. People will turn on Rivera in a heartbeat if that happens, and that includes most of the fans who don't want Cam right now.

I don't really care if fans throw a hissy fit. Better than half the fanbase thought David Carr was the answer. I expect overreaction, unrealistic expectations and general silliness this season regardless. It's par for the course.

uhm, I doubt that will happen... maybe if we take a different QB and he busts, but I doubt it'll happen just for passing on Newton.

We'll see. Most Penther fans loved John Fox at one time, and you can make the argument that never getting a franchise QB is what did him in.

strangely enough many loved him with Jake Delhomme taking us to the Superbowl.

Are you telling me if Rivera got Billy Volek or someone else to take us to the Superbowl people would really care that much if we didn't have Cam Newton? Rivera seems intent on being there regularly so I hope he makes it. He knows the value of a franchise QB, so I expect him to be always on the look out for one.

We'll see.
