Re: Defensive Tackle-Draft is NOT the way to go

DT's take 2-3 years at least to develop, as they're generally being thrust into a different situation and dealing with much larger and faster offensive lineman than they were in college. However, DT's are one of the safer early picks as the talent is more easily recognizeable and as long as you don't go for physical specimens and just go for the people who are impact players you are well off.

We shouldn't go for a DT in the draft because of this, and instead try to nab one in FA because we really don't have the time to wait for them to blossom.

well, DT's do take a while to develop, more so than any other position I think. Haynseworth was considered a bust after about 4 years. :driving:

But anyway, I don't want a DT, I'd much rather draft a TE

Imo we need a do everything TE, and I wouldn't mind seeing Pettigrew as a panther. Big boy at 6-6 260, strong and can block. (fits foxes styles, but he has really good hands, runs good routes (most of the time) and has some decent speed to him for his size. (not the fastest guy in the world but he's got decent enough speed for what we would use him as and like I said he has sure hands.

....Yeah Jake Delhommes are just SOOOOO easy to find aren't they?

so many undrafted free agents starting and outperforming first round draft picks out there. Here's something you probably didn't look up: 9 out of the top 15 QBs this year were first rounders. So much for "bust" probability.

back to the topic at hand.

You're amusing.

you draft based on the player, not how sure a thing it is. If you believe the player's good, you don't decide against drafting him because "well, only about half of the DTs in the first round in the last five years have been any good, and some of them mysteriously don't count because they're nosetackles."

We'll do what we always do. What we actually should do IMO. Fill all the holes as best we possibly can in free agency given the limited talent pool and our limited budget. Pick the guys we have evaluated as the best football players on draft day. I don't think the first pick should be narrowed to less than 4 positions. DT, DE, CB, OL, WR, QB <-examples of the pick we could make for the right guy. I just don't want us reaching for marginal or iffy talent in the first or second rounds because it's a need. IMO that increases the bust factor far more than staying away from any particular position.

Great point.

The reason our last few drafts have been so good, is simply because we have actively plugged all holes with veterans before the draft, allowing us to pick the BPA. So many teams reached in the first round last season, Sam Baker (projected early second), Duane Brown (projected mid second), Felix Jones (projected early second), Aqib Talib (projected early second), Joe Flacco (projected early second). That all happened because teams set their stall on picking a position in the first round as they had a hole in their roster, so when the run on them happened they selected the next best one...even if they were lower round talent.

With the distinct lack of first round DT talent I can easily see teams reaching for this position so we really would be much best addressing this position in free agency and then if a stud falls to us we can draft him and let them battle it out in camp.

For the first time in a while our drafts have resulted in a TON of first and second round talent throughout our drafts simply because we have our rosters filled and pick up the positions that were over looked as teams reached in other positions.

DT in free agency for me and then keep our fingers crossed.

Of course you want to draft a guy at DT in the first day of the draft. First round?? Depends on if we get a first round choice, who is available, and what other needs we have to fill. If for example we get a pick in the first round for Peppers and there is a fantastic DE prospect available we might go for that if there are a number of DTs still available in the second.

Each year it seems there is a run on some positions. Last year it was offensive tackles which is why we moved up to get Otah. It is all about cost versus value in the first day.

While we are at it I would like us to sign a few free agent DTs, and DEs as well. Last year we did a great job of signing offensive line guys like Fonoti and Brown and Vincent who were cheap, had a good opportunity to try and make the team and although we only kept Vincent, we had plenty of choices. I think we need to take the same approach this year on the defense side of the line.

    • Him and Sanders are the only QBs I would consider in the first round. I won’t be upset if we take Sanders, unlike some people on the board. Both have potential to be really good NFL QBs if the teams can develop them.  But as we have seen teams are not willing or are unable to now properly develop rookie QBs.
    • I remember the last time we had a Cam at QB in Charlotte
    • Because Young is so historically bad that it just skews too far outside the normal deviations that perspective is easily lost. That or they just don't want to believe it.  The struggles last year would have been more about the infighting and poor roster building or idiot owner's hiring practices than with Stroud. He wouldn't have been as good but he wouldn't have been ruined here and the pressure was not Carr-esk if you take out the Young created portion from his playing style.  Dude is a young guy on a team coached by a Defensive guy building a good D but not building up the O in year 2 of his HC 1st time gig. Seems familiar... Go look at his output this year and not just some crappy Thursday night implosion game, I would take that in a second and never ever look back every time without a shred of doubt while eating 4 of those games a year with a giant smile on my face.
