1st rounders since 2004

2003

Dewayne Robertson-Nose tackle (N/A)

Jonathan Sullivan-New England couldn't even save his career

Kevin Williams-Constitutes half of the feared Williams wall in Minnesota

Jimmy Kennedy-Slowly developed the first 4 years, then went horribly downhill.

William Joseph-Massive bust

2004

Tommie Harris-Pro bowler

Vince Wilfork-Nose tackle

Marcus Tubbs-bust (one solid season sandwiched between 2 ineffective ones)

2005

Travis Johnson-Iffy at best. Again, one solid season, surrounded by 3 average ones

Luis Castillo-Converted to DE (N/A)

Mike Patterson-Solid starter

2006

Haloti Ngata-Premier Nose Tackle (N/A)

Broderick Bunkley-solid starter

John McCargo-Nothingness

2007

Amobi Okoye-Decent starter. Better than Damione

Justin Harrell-BUST

2008

Glenn Dorsey-Solid rookie effort

Sedrick Ellis-Ditto^

Kentwan Balmer-Hasn't done anything yet

First round DTs can be line disruptors, but if they are busts, they are awful. Would you assume that kind of a risk, providing we do get a first rounder for Peppers?

why don't NTs count? Ngata's been phenomenal. Castillo has been a force in the 3-4, in what's essentially a tackle position.

You could do the same with DE. Not everybody works out. Not that I think DT is the only option, but certainly you can go down the line and see failure at any position.

You can do this with just about every position. The draft is just as much hit or miss with DTs as it is with QBs and so on and so on.

Take the best DT's in the game today: Haynesworth, Jenkins, K Williams, J Williams, Ngata, Hampton, Wilfork, and formally Harris and Stroud, and what you find is almost all were taken in the first with a handful in the second round.

Name the greatest of all time: Mean Joe, Olsen, Randy White, Lilly and Page, and you find all were taken in the first.

Quarterback on the other hand...

....Yeah Jake Delhommes are just SOOOOO easy to find aren't they?

so many undrafted free agents starting and outperforming first round draft picks out there. Here's something you probably didn't look up: 9 out of the top 15 QBs this year were first rounders. So much for "bust" probability.

back to the topic at hand.

well, DT's do take a while to develop, more so than any other position I think. Haynseworth was considered a bust after about 4 years. :driving:

But anyway, I don't want a DT, I'd much rather draft a TE

oh noes, but that's on the Panthers first round "no-nos" list.

Other positions...

QB

WR

Safety

Instead let's stockpile running backs and linebackers....

....although I would take Maualuga out of SC...

    • Him and Sanders are the only QBs I would consider in the first round. I won’t be upset if we take Sanders, unlike some people on the board. Both have potential to be really good NFL QBs if the teams can develop them.  But as we have seen teams are not willing or are unable to now properly develop rookie QBs.
    • I remember the last time we had a Cam at QB in Charlotte
    • Because Young is so historically bad that it just skews too far outside the normal deviations that perspective is easily lost. That or they just don't want to believe it.  The struggles last year would have been more about the infighting and poor roster building or idiot owner's hiring practices than with Stroud. He wouldn't have been as good but he wouldn't have been ruined here and the pressure was not Carr-esk if you take out the Young created portion from his playing style.  Dude is a young guy on a team coached by a Defensive guy building a good D but not building up the O in year 2 of his HC 1st time gig. Seems familiar... Go look at his output this year and not just some crappy Thursday night implosion game, I would take that in a second and never ever look back every time without a shred of doubt while eating 4 of those games a year with a giant smile on my face.
