Panthers go No.1: P.P.

Isn't Meeks just coaching the secondary? I would imagine that McDermott is going to be calling the plays and in doing so will be determining the coverages.

Thats what I was thinking as well. Meeks probably was a good guy here and deserved a coaching position, just didnt work out as the d coordinator. I think we will see our share of man and zones this year, the size of Peterson is outstanding and he would excel in any system.

Peterson is great no doubt but if Meeks is running the secondary will he be wasted if we continue to run primary zone and not man coverage? Seems to me that conventional wisdom puts the emphasis on safety play and deep coverage as much or more than corner play. He appears very sound in man coverage and as a returner. I would like to see if we can find a poor man's Peterson in perhaps the third or fourth round. But then again if we could find a stud DE or a top rated quarterback who falls to the third, then it could free us up to get Peterson. Just don't know if he is the primary need at this point.

at this point, our coaches are going to do their job and evaluate the best move for the team, both now and in the future.. Our scouting department is trying to set us up for success...

there are so many questions and variables, discussing all of this means nothing until we hear Goodell call out what we do with the 1st pick..

I agree with you, which is why I'm saying that..

i don't know that rivera and mcdermott are big zone guys. not sure meeks preference for zone will matter.

Zone blitzes but you better cover Mono y mono on all the blitzes..Patrick Peterson is the guy...hopefully we go all out hyping Fairley as the next Reggie White...Trade Down or heck just take Patric Peterson.

Meeks is a secondary coach...he will run whatever Rivera and McDermott tell him to. Rivera and McDermott Blitz..then Blitz..and oh yeah Blitz.

Peterson makes more sense every day.

Jim Johnson type defenses do their fair share of zone blitzing. They just don't do it out of 3-4 set like people are used to seeing.

How Rivera and McDermott choose to operate? We'll see.

Honestly, it doesn't matter who you have at CB or Safety. They could be the best in the league. But if the Defensive Line gets no pressure, then they are obsolete. We need to be able to collapse the pocket, especially in our division with Ryan/Brees/Freeman. Without pressure, the QB's will be able to sit back all day and hit open targets.

Agreed...we need interior DL pressure. Just not from Fairley.:banghead:

Fairley can do it and I think he will be fine but I think equal impact could be had in a F-R-E-E A-G-E-N-C-E-Y

saaaaaaaay whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat?

Crazy I know.

Assuming we resign most of our key starters* We should have a decent amt of money to attract a DT. I have a feeling we will wisley spen some money for a couple of "Name" guys.

*not so fast Thomas Davis and your missing ACLs( that will be a popular comment)..and to add salt... James Anderson>Thomas Davis..without knees.

I don't really think it matters if it's the #1 pick or not. People get to caught up with number's. Marshalls gone right? Gambles getting older. Captin's ok, but he's undersized. Peterson could be a Devin Hester type for this team. Just as long as he stays on the defensive side of the ball. He has FS size, good speed, He's a good pick for a defensive minded team who's secondary is suspect at times.

    • Oh he would absolutely flourish. It’s the panthers way. It’s no different with coaches. Sometimes they reach their expiration date, go somewhere else, and find new success.  Similarly to Burns, how long to wait for the light to finally turn on?  Market forces will demand a salary that the panthers can not responsibly match. Sliding him to guard will fit his skill set better, but he has played LT for 3 years. He will receive offers from other teams wanting to pay him LT money.  At guard, he won’t start with what they have paid Hunt and Lewis. Center then?? Dunno. Maybe? He will become a backup by default once they draft their stud LT. I doubt Dan just stands pat. That’s not his MO.  So where does this put him? Can you match what other teams will offer for a backup LT/guard? Do you dish out franchise LT $ on a guy who still needs significant improvement in pass protection. This team will be DOA in the playoffs with the very first team who has a formidable speed rusher. What if he has hit his ceiling in pass protection already and they sign him long term? It’s a big gamble either way.
    • We're in a great position to see just how big of a misstep it would be, having made so many ourselves
    • I didn't say I would have done it. I was just saying that I can see why some in the FO considered it. Everything was done to give Bryce weapons. Solidify the interior line thru FA. Get XL at WR in round 1 and then get the most talented RB in round 2. Take a TE in round 4, etc They were probably "assuming" he'd make a complete recovery during the 2024 season. I'm a skeptical person. I wouldn't have assumed he'd be ok in 2024. I personally would have taken another position in the 2nd for that very reason. But, if I were "influenced" to take him I would've argued to keep him off the field, especially seeing how things were going for us record wise. Conventional Wisdom says most backs don't get back to normal until two years after the ACL surgery. He was injured in Fall 2023. Having him suit up in 2025 would have been almost 2 years since the original injury. You have him for 3 year on low contract. If he balls out, you resign him for a couple of more years b/c he'd only have 3 years of tread on the tires. If he's ok but not great you let him walk.
