How many tags do we have to work with? off the top of my head I'm thinking we have one franchise tag, a couple 1st & 3rd's, a 2nd round tag, and then there are the originally-drafted tags.

I'd like to avoid using the franchise tag if we have to, but if it comes down to absolutely having to use it I'd rather use it on Charles Johnson since using a franchise tag on Kalil gives him LT money. Throw a 1st and 3rd tag on Kalil and DeAngelo, and a 2nd on Thomas Davis.

I could be completely wrong though because I have no idea what happens with tags under the new CBA.

If possible though I'd definitely like to sign all of them long term.

You are confusing Franchise Tags with Restricted Free Agent tenders.

oh and I've mentioned this in several threads, but despite DWill being 27 and in his 5th season, he has LESS carries than Chris Johnson and Adrian Peterson. In fact, he only has about 30 carries MORE than Matt Forte, who is 25 and in his 3rd season.

plenty of mileage left. and I don't think they would have placed him on IR so early if they didn't have plans to either trade him or resign him.

let's just forget about the high mileage he racked up in college.

college he was competing against college defenses, whereas in the NFL he's constantly being smacked around by some of the best athletes in the world.

it is apples to apples when you compare the abuses and usage he had in college vs. other guys when they entered the NFL. Williams was worked like a dog.

you don't get beat up in college as bad as you do in the NFL. all of those extra carries don't have as big of an impact as they do in the NFL.

basically what I'm saying is it's not like because he's 27 he's automatically going to drop off and fade into mediocrity. I would rather keep him and go back to the 2008/2009 formula and have him and Stewart share carries.

I don't want to run Stewart into the ground over the next few seasons. and I don't trust Goodson enough to let one of the only play makers this offense has walks.

I, like you, would love to see us keep him. However, to discount the extreme abuse and number of carries he had in college is not valid.

He was a WORK HORSE in college....and took a lot of abuse.

30 yo RB's tend to drop off VERY FAST. So, I am torn on how much he is worth given our strength at RB and the significant needs at other positions.

I would have to say that I would prefer to add a OLineman like Mankins and run Stewart/Goodson behind it.....than re-sign DWill and run he and Stewart behind the existing group.

Williams had signicantly more carries/miles on him than those guys coming into the NFL. Williams has shared carries his entire career in the NFL (unlike those guys) and he is now having struggles putting in a full season.

...yet williams has missed more games due to injury than both peterson and johnson combined.

williams doesn't have the years left in him like some would like to believe.

even if carolina signs him, i wouldn't be surprised to see him take a backseat to stewart...especially with the possibility of an 18 game season in the works.
